Background / History

Childhood experiments

Bo Yi was created by Bo Zheyuan as an experimental subject combining human and Anomaly genes. He grew up in a laboratory alongside other subjects designated “Bo Two,” “Bo Three,” and so on, whom he describes as his brothers and sisters. His childhood body bore needle marks, bruises, restraint injuries, and a metal identification tag reading “Bo One” 200 223.

A boy brought into the laboratory taught him that ordinary people did not live in testing chambers or have an obligation to endure experiments. Through that boy, Bo Yi first learned about the world outside: blue skies, sunlight, trees, and life beyond laboratories 223.

During a childhood vision in the sanatorium, Bo Yi sees his younger self summon Mitian and wish to live. Mitian grants the wish; a later account in Mitian’s dream shows him healing Bo Yi and strengthening the healing ability Bo Yi already possessed 202 224.

The Institute’s control

The Scientific Research Institute implanted a chip in Bo Yi during childhood. Located at the back of his neck, it enabled tracking and electric shocks; interference with its core could trigger self-destruction. Bo Yi therefore stopped Mitian from simply pulling it out during their escape from the Institute 65 142.

Despite becoming a researcher with his own laboratory, Bo Yi remained vulnerable to the Institute’s confinement and control. After Mitian broke into the dark room holding him, Bo Yi became unusually accepting of his closeness, feeling that a deeply buried childhood wish had finally come true 64 65 152.

Bo Yi later rejected the Institute’s offer to disable the chip’s tracking and shock programs. He instead entered St. Mary’s Sanatorium intending to remove it entirely. By the end of that ordeal, the implant was gone and his lingering physical ailments had cleared 142 202 207.

After the Institute was burned down and Bo Zheyuan was detained, Bo Yi could discuss his origins with greater composure. His father nevertheless hinted that he still had a means of threatening him 221 223.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and slender, with a less muscular physique than some other players 1 66.
  • Hair: Long, smooth, glossy hair loosely tied into a small ponytail 1.
  • Face: A cool-toned complexion, pale eyes, and slightly upturned outer eye corners give him an aloof appearance 1.
  • Clothing: Typically wears a white, lab-coat-like garment meticulously buttoned to the collar 1.
  • Hands: Long, well-proportioned fingers with clearly defined joints and neatly trimmed nails 3 116.
  • Childhood appearance: Black hair, large round eyes, pale skin, and round cheeks retaining a little baby fat 223 224.

Personality

Bo Yi is reserved, independent, and largely indifferent to other players’ opinions. He continues examining dangerous portraits even when newcomers decide he is too reckless to rely on. His curiosity repeatedly draws him into restricted rooms, confrontations with NPCs, and direct examinations of hostile Anomalies 2 3 18 37.

His research interests often outweigh disgust or fear. He restrains an attacking Anomaly to collect a nail, dissects a crawling fish, and becomes so absorbed in studying fish with human arms that he follows them across the village. Useful discoveries visibly improve his mood 3 35 43 46.

His aversion to close contact applies specifically to living humans, not to Anomalies, however filthy or slimy they may be. He declines Pan Lulu’s request to team up after she touches his shirt. This fastidiousness can also work against him: leaving a saliva-covered knife on the floor contributes to his being caught and bitten by Jiang Xiaofeng 7 41.

Although accustomed to relying on himself, Bo Yi becomes attached to Mitian. He worries during Mitian’s absence, searches an instance for him, and eventually recognizes that their initially wary partnership has become one in which they can entrust themselves to each other. His increasing willingness to accept Mitian’s touch contrasts with his earlier insistence on personal distance 122 135 201 217.

Abilities & Skills

Regeneration

Bo Yi possesses an innate healing ability that Mitian strengthened during their childhood encounter 224.

  • Minor cuts can heal completely overnight without leaving scars 116.
  • A sanatorium examination finds neither existing wounds nor traces of previously healed wounds, despite the doctor having witnessed his blood being drawn 192.
  • His unusual constitution satisfies the doctor’s initial criteria for a vessel; subsequent examinations produce ideal readings until the implanted device is discovered 192.
  • Healing does not prevent pain, injury, or temporary exhaustion. The Institute’s shocks leave him weakened well after their signal is cut off 66 102.

Protective Evil God Power

A portion of Mitian’s power lies concealed inside Bo Yi. Mitian initially does not know it is there because it remains deeply hidden and normally activates only when Bo Yi’s life is in serious danger 207.

  • Black mist emerges from Bo Yi during the sanatorium ritual and subsequently returns inside him 202.
  • Mitian describes the embedded power as protective 207.
  • After remaining within Bo Yi for so long, it retains almost none of Mitian’s aura, making it appear ownerless and vulnerable to seizure by another being 256.
  • Blood from a shallow wound leaves a trace of this black mist on the amusement park’s runes; the mist enters the runes and their glow goes dark 257.

Combat and Evasion

Bo Yi combines blade work, grappling, and quick evasive movement rather than relying solely on his healing 3 37 125.

  • Blocks an Anomaly’s nails with his scalpel and restrains her wrist to remove a specimen 3.
  • Vaults past the homeowner’s blade, kicks him into a well, and seals the opening with a large rock 37.
  • Dislocates Jiang Xiaofeng’s arms and later resets them 46.
  • Adjusts his body in midair after being pushed and pursues an opponent through tree branches while attacking with a blade 113 125.
  • Evades a dagger aimed at the back of his neck before four attackers surround him 248.
  • Can be overwhelmed by stronger opponents, coordinated attacks, injury, or instance-specific reductions in strength 114 163 189.

Research and Technical Knowledge

Bo Yi approaches Anomalies as subjects for examination and experimentation 3 35 43.

  • Uses a detector to assess anomalous energy; the woman in Doll Castle registers at approximately class B 3.
  • Collects physical specimens, performs dissections, compares anatomy, and records experimental data 3 35 43 46.
  • Understands laboratory equipment through both professional experience and firsthand exposure to childhood experiments 152.
  • Tests supernatural materials for practical effects, including the Maiden’s hair and the liquid collected from coffins 44 52 55.

Investigation and Rule Exploitation

Bo Yi identifies connections among objects, NPC behavior, and an instance’s death conditions 24 37 97.

  • Makes the castle master vanish by placing his eyes into the hidden Butler Doll 24.
  • Uses reflections to detect threats, including the woman behind him and the homeowner’s still-raised blade 2 37.
  • Connects Xu Jingqi’s falling grades with her sudden illness and recognizes inconsistencies in the gatekeeper’s account 93 97.
  • Distracts patient NPCs with his blood to escape his ward 164.
  • Recognizes the Saintess Statue as the source behind a larger manifestation and attacks the statue rather than continuing to fight the manifestation 184.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Scalpel — His routinely carried “old friend”: a light silver blade, thin as a cicada’s wing, capable of cutting tough Anomaly skin 3.
  • Anomaly detector — Warns of nearby anomalous activity and measures approximate energy strength 3.
  • Special rope — Used to bind the woman in Doll Castle, though she breaks one side 3.
  • Specimen bags and gloves — Research supplies; gloves stained with dissected fish blood briefly interrupt the homeowner’s advance 37.
  • Paper knife — Used against the many-armed woman; during their prolonged fight, he manages to cut off a lock of her hair 44.
  • Severed Maiden’s hair — Repels fish and affects contaminated players. Bo Yi ties strands around players’ wrists, but later finds the protection has weakened 44 46 54.
  • Collected coffin liquid — Carried in a bottle and used to restore severed fish arms for the players’ worship ritual 52 58.
  • Holy Medicine — Awarded despite his zero blood-test reading; he pockets the bottle rather than drinking it immediately 175.
  • Implanted chip — Former tracking, shock, and self-destruct device; subsequently removed 142 207.

The Mist Game filters out highly destructive weapons. Bo Yi’s briefcase of Anomaly-capture tools disappears when he enters Worship the Lady, while small defensive blades are permitted 31.

Relationships

  • Mitian — Evil God, research collaborator, rescuer, and increasingly intimate companion. Their agreement initially gives Bo Yi access to chosen instances and experimental material. It develops into mutual trust, including Bo Yi entrusting him with the chip-removal plan 30 31 201 217.
  • Bo Zheyuan — Biological father, creator, and Scientific Research Institute director. Bo Yi openly mocks him after his detention and treats his injuries as possible retribution for his actions 221 223.
  • Other “Bo” experimental subjects — Laboratory subjects bearing related numbered designations, whom Bo Yi describes as his brothers and sisters 200.
  • Unnamed childhood boy — Fellow captive who taught Bo Yi that laboratory confinement and experimentation were not normal life 223.
  • Bo Yu — Fellow player he pulls away from the compulsive fish-ball meal and later helps protect from transformed players 38 44 45 46.
  • Jiang Miaoyi — Investigative ally in Home Visit; shares medical-record and room-occupancy clues and warns him of an attack 93 97 102.
  • Ran Yan — Sanatorium ally. Bo Yi attempts to reach her during an attack, and they later reject escape plans that would abandon either of them 189 215.
  • Zheng Rong — Hostile player who attempts to stab him from behind during the castle master’s pursuit 24.
  • Liang Pingkang and Fang Jun — Participants in the plot to force him into Master Kang’s Wedding Garment. Fang Jun accuses him of killing Xiao Xiao and tries to stab him 130.
  • Mr. “Clown” — Amusement park opponent who targets Bo Yi to seize the portion of Mitian’s power hidden inside him 256.
