Background / History
Arrival at the Mist Shop
Xiao Wu introduces himself as an assistant sent by Su Bai’s supernatural betrothed. He claims that his master arranged his human form, granted him shop-related abilities, and ordered him to obey Su Bai. While explaining the shop, he reveals that Su Bai’s power became bound to its power upon entering: strengthening the shop would also strengthen its owner 8.
He teaches Su Bai how to create special merchandise by placing ghosts or resentful spirits inside ordinary objects. He also explains the Palm Brand’s ability to turn a handled door into an entrance to the Mist Shop 9.
To persuade Su Bai to keep him, Xiao Wu offers to watch the shop, open its door when called, and search for information about nightmares. Su Bai accepts him as the shop’s caretaker. After Su Bai leaves, Xiao Wu’s lively expression disappears; he murmurs that they have finally met before reverting to a small yarn doll 10.
Early Shop Life
Xiao Wu identifies the effect of Su Bai’s first special product, a pair of white high heels containing the White Qipao Paper Figure. He subsequently becomes dormant, attributing his condition to the shop’s weakness, but insists that Su Bai call his name if trapped in danger without a door 24.
The arrival of Kai Xin, the Little Black Cat, exposes a jealous side to Xiao Wu. He intimidates the kitten into returning to its cord form, then warns Su Bai that some information about the Nightmare World is dangerous enough to require secrecy 69.
When an exhausted Su Bai falls asleep holding him, Xiao Wu quietly stays beside him and calls the Mist Shop a place created for “my wife.” As he returns to doll form, a black-and-red thread enters Kai Xin’s wrist cord, accompanied by an unfamiliar voice promising to go with Su Bai next time 70.
Fog City
Before becoming dormant, Xiao Wu confirms that the Mist Shop can appear as an ordinary general store and opens its expanded Rest Room for Su Bai to live in. His subsequent inactivity lasts more than two months despite the shop’s increased strength; the doll finally begins moving again after approximately three months 147 187.
Still unable to take human form, Xiao Wu describes his difficulty as poor “signal reception.” He explains that Fog City’s dense fog is the city lord’s true body and devises a way to attack him through his Doll avatar: lure it into the Mist Shop, where its contained consciousness and power cannot escape 189 201.
Xiao Wu also modifies Su Bai’s blood-colored beads to collect energy from fallen Ghost Creatures and replenishes his depleted strength. After the Ghost Shaman consumes the portion of the Fog City Lord trapped in the shop, Xiao Wu explains that the shop must digest the captured power gradually 190 201.
His explanation that he had been somewhere “rather special” leads Su Bai to suspect that the doll’s consciousness can leave the shop. Xiao Wu warns that dangerous beings seeking the Ghost Shaman’s cooperation may discover Su Bai’s relationship with him, making Su Bai’s continued growth essential 203.
Identity Revealed
Su Bai eventually understands that Xiao Wu, Wu Heng, and the Ghost Shaman are identities of the same being. Xiao Wu’s prolonged “sleep” was not caused by insufficient shop power: the controller of the Thread-Wrapped Doll had been occupied elsewhere 495.
The distinction between controller and shell becomes explicit when Wu Heng uses Xiao Wu’s body to help Su Bai endure an adjustment to newly acquired power. The shell’s connection to the Mist Shop allows the shop to regulate that power while Su Bai sleeps. Later narration confirms that Xiao Wu’s repeated disconnections occur when Wu Heng acts elsewhere under another identity 586 609.
Appearance
- Human form: A small boy with fair, delicate features, bloodlessly pale cheeks, dark red eyes, and exceptionally soft hair. He initially reaches only about Su Bai’s waist and often stands on tiptoe to meet his gaze 8 10 69.
- Apparent age: Initially described as five or six years old; a later comparison describes him as seven or eight. These estimates concern the shell’s appearance, not Wu Heng’s age 10 516.
- Weight: Almost weightless, allowing even the weakened Su Bai to lift him easily 10 70.
- Doll form: A palm-sized figure woven from yarn or intertwined cords. Its initial depiction is black, while later passages describe white cord and a white Thread-Wrapped Doll 10 70 187.
- Transformation: His human figure can become transparent before reverting to the doll shell 10 24.
- Resemblance: Xiao Wu and Yao share certain facial traits with Wu Heng’s adult face 516.
Personality
Xiao Wu presents himself as an eager, polite assistant who anxiously insists on his usefulness. His childish voice contrasts with an instructor-like manner and conspicuously mature reactions. Su Bai’s teasing and physical closeness frequently leave him flustered or blushing 8 10 69 190.
His devotion to Su Bai is protective but secretive. He withholds dangerous knowledge, encourages Su Bai to grow stronger, and offers quiet companionship when Su Bai is too exhausted to remain guarded. His playful assistant persona can disappear abruptly, revealing a cool, detached expression 10 69 70 203.
Xiao Wu is openly jealous of Kai Xin’s closeness to Su Bai, but concern for Su Bai overrides that rivalry: he recommends taking the cat along when its abilities could help 69 190.
Abilities & Skills
Doll Transformation and Remote Control
Xiao Wu is a controllable doll shell capable of assuming a childlike human form 24 495.
- The shell becomes motionless when Wu Heng’s consciousness is occupied elsewhere 495 609.
- Connection problems can prevent it from taking human form without preventing speech or movement in doll form 189 190.
- Its connection to the Mist Shop helps regulate Su Bai’s newly acquired power during sleep 586.
- Early claims that Xiao Wu cannot leave the shop and must sleep solely to conserve power are later exposed as misleading 10 495 609.
Nightmare Information and Item Appraisal
Xiao Wu offers an information-search ability likened to a human search engine, covering nightmare locations, people, and supernatural entities 10.
- Retrieves information about Su Bai’s Vengeful Ghost Puzzle and associated epithets 10.
- Recognizes the white high heels’ paper-lightening effect with a single glance 24.
- Explains the Fog City Lord’s true body, territorial control, time limits, and vulnerable connection to his Doll 189.
- Withholds information he considers dangerous; his knowledge does not translate into unrestricted disclosure 69.
- Cannot explain Lin Wan’s continued unconsciousness, prompting a search for ways to nourish or repair her soul 277 367.
Mist Shop Access and Stewardship
Xiao Wu helps Su Bai understand and operate the Mist Shop rather than independently owning its powers 8 10.
- Offers to open a shop entrance when Su Bai calls his name and cannot find a handled door; initially qualifies this with whether he can hear the call 10 24.
- Explains how the shop can become a visible general store and makes its Rest Room usable during the Fog City stay 147.
- Advises against frequent manipulation of the shop’s time flow, though he accepts its use during Fog City 203.
Item Creation and Modification
Xiao Wu understands how supernatural power can be stored in merchandise and modifies equipment to suit Su Bai’s growing control 9 190.
- Removes the blood-colored beads’ selective absorption restrictions, allowing them to collect stray energy from nearby fallen Ghost Creatures through the Palm Brand 190.
- Explains that the collected power can later become shop merchandise, though it may contain mixed energies 190.
- Produces occasional trinkets whose abilities exceed those of Su Bai’s mass-produced goods 511.
Power Transfer
Xiao Wu directly restores Su Bai’s depleted energy through physical contact 190.
- Transfers a particularly pure, crisp form of Red Moon power 190.
- Replenishes Su Bai within seconds, leaving him feeling more energetic than before entering Fog City 190.
- Attributes the amount he can provide at that moment to the weak signal 190.
Relationships
- Su Bai — Shop owner and Wu Heng’s marriage-contract partner. Xiao Wu addresses him as “Boss,” repeatedly slips into “Madam,” and privately calls him “my wife.” Su Bai initially treats him as an assistant and mascot before recognizing his underlying identity 8 10 70 495 586.
- Wu Heng / Ghost Shaman — Xiao Wu’s controller and true identity. References to a separate “Master” form part of the assistant persona 495 609.
- Kai Xin / Happy — Fellow Mist Shop mascot and rival for Su Bai’s attention. Xiao Wu intimidates the kitten but acknowledges its usefulness and sometimes treats it more gently around the Cat Spirits’ figurine 69 188 190.
- Su Xuan — Shares information with Xiao Wu and advises that Su Bai should know less. Xiao Wu also joins the search for a method to repair Lin Wan’s soul 367 495.
- Lin Wan — Su Bai’s mother. Xiao Wu is consulted about her unconsciousness and helps search for a remedy for her damaged soul 277 367.

Trivia
- Xiao Wu explicitly introduces “Wu” as the number five, following one, two, three, and four 8.
- Su Bai was initially less wary of Xiao Wu because he resembled Yao, an existing Vengeful Ghost Puzzle piece 253.
- Xiao Wu’s recurring “I… my master” corrections foreshadow the revelation that the assistant and the supposed master are the same being 189 201 203 495.
