Background / History

According to the memories she initially recovers inside Happiness Residential Complex, Feng Ling was born in a village outside Honghuai City. Those recollections state that her parents died when she was eight, and that her grandmother gave her a silver photograph pendant at their funeral. Her grandmother, a village spirit medium, supposedly later died of illness shortly after Feng Ling received her university acceptance letter 25 26.

Feng Ling initially remembers becoming a Nightmare World player recently and clearing only the beginner game. In this version of her history, after returning to ordinary life, she immersed herself in coursework, activities, and certification-exam preparation to avoid thinking about the Nightmare World. Exhausted from studying, she fell asleep in the library and was sent into Happiness Residential Complex, which she understood to be her second game 26.

These recollections are not her complete or fully reliable history. Su Bai recognizes discrepancies in her apparent newcomer identity and concludes that she has still not remembered who she really is. During the fighting at Building 1, the last layer of the complex's false memories breaks, restoring her memories of her companions, her abilities, and her role as leader of the Nameless Society 48 59 61.

In reality, Feng Ling is a veteran with approximately three years of experience who has established a home and temporary base in the Nightmare World. Her organization cleared the supernatural threats from the Nightmare World's Honghuai Normal University and made it their base. She and most of her companions remain in the Nightmare World because they have no one or nothing in the Real World worth returning to 59 61 249.

Before entering Happiness Residential Complex, Feng Ling secretly erased her name from the organization's party-forming item. Writing names on the item gives its users a high chance of entering the same game, while erasing her name ensured that she would not enter alongside her companions. She wanted time away from the pressures of leadership, but instead became trapped beneath two layers of confused memories and forgot her abilities 61.

Her later account of her childhood contradicts the initial recollection that both parents died when she was eight. Her mother actually died when Feng Ling was five, while trying to stop a debt-ridden drunk from selling her. Feng Ling has no one waiting for her in the Real World and regards the Nameless Society as her home. She considers whether the warm, ordinary family life supplied by Happiness Residential Complex made her reluctant to abandon its false identity 648.

In Su Bai's previous life, Feng Ling and the Nameless Society remained prominent even ten years after their early acquaintance. She repeatedly invited him to join, but he declined. Su Bai also recalls Feng Ling, Yu Jin, the Nameless Society, and other teams entering the Human-Faced Forest in response to a prophecy offering a chance to save humanity. The forest drained their powers, and everyone there, including Su Bai, died. Wu Heng later explains that a Red Moon Society experimental site beneath the forest had consumed nearly all of its former power 61 251 259 639.

Appearance

  • Clothing: A simple T-shirt and jeans, contrasting with the fashionable black clothing Su Bai wears during their first encounter 25.
  • Hair: Two neat braids during her memory-confused appearance. After recovering her true memories, she burns through the hair ties and lets the braids unravel; in Mirror Apartments, she later ties her hair into a neater ponytail 25 59 240.
  • Face and glasses: A delicate face and glasses with faded frames, later described as rusting and peeling 25 32.
  • Eyesight: Mildly nearsighted; she wears glasses partly because they give her a sense of security 25.
  • Contrast with Su Bai’s recollection: Her outfit differs enough from what he remembers that he laughs when he first recognizes her 48.
  • Restored demeanor: Removing her glasses reveals a resolute, confident expression that makes her appear almost like a different person. Her eyes can seem to contain orange flames 59 60.
  • Low-profile disguise: Her youthful, approachable appearance allows her to blend into a crowd. Despite looking like a girl next door, her eyes convey worldly weariness and the pressure of considerable power 240.
  • Blood Moon Lake appearance: Wears black-framed glasses and a braided ponytail. During the villa's script, she also wears a maid's uniform 478 485.

Personality

Feng Ling is anxious but attentive to danger while trapped in her apparent newcomer identity. She refuses to pick up money in the elevator because of her grandmother’s warnings, avoids enclosed elevators after recovering her initial memories, and checks possible escape routes while descending the stairs. She also recognizes that her poor acting could expose her to the ghosts posing as her family 25 27 28 32.

Her compassion can override that caution. Believing a wounded woman might be another player, she rushes to help despite knowing that the complex contains ghosts. Once the woman attacks her, Feng Ling realizes that her kindness has placed her in mortal danger 27.

She is considerate even while frightened: after the attack, she worries about staining Ning Yan’s clean sofa with blood. She also responds warmly to meeting someone from her university, despite Ning Yan’s openly dismissive treatment of newcomers 28 31.

With her true memories restored, Feng Ling displays confidence, resolve, and a willingness to protect other players. She reassures Qiu Lei during the ghost attack, joins the defense, and continues exploring the Mirror World despite losing access to her usual abilities 59 249.

Her position as a famous leader can feel suffocating. She seeks occasional freedom from that role and finds it relaxing to speak with Su Bai, who does not treat her as an especially impressive figure. Nevertheless, her attachment to her companions is profound: their memories help break the complex's false identity, and she ultimately chooses to fight alongside them rather than leave the Nightmare World 59 61 65 648.

Feng Ling does not regard herself as the organization's sole source of strength. She believes her companions would remain the strongest player team even without her, and emphasizes that they can accomplish things she cannot do alone. She also dislikes dishonesty and insists that she and her organization continue to follow the laws of the Real World, rejecting Yue Zhengqing's claim that players are no longer bound by them 245 249.

She has a mischievous and observant side. At Blood Moon Lake, she uses a provocative revelation about Wu Heng and Su Bai to interrupt a repetitive scripted argument, watches the resulting upheaval with amusement, and takes an interest in their relationship 489 490 492 494.

Abilities & Skills

“Never put a Band-Aid on crooked”

Feng Ling identifies this as her Trait while she believes herself to be a newcomer. She does not demonstrate its effects at that stage because her memory confusion has also made her forget her developed abilities 29 61.

  • Suggested potential: Fang Xiujie associates Band-Aids with treatment and healing and offers to develop research directions for her 29.
  • Development: The Trait first evolves into healing, then self-healing. During another game, self-healing mutates into “Immortal Bird,” granting healing within flames and control of orange fire 61.
  • Temporary combat limitation: Su Bai considers her memory-confused condition unsuitable for confronting supernatural entities directly, making role-playing the safer survival strategy. This limitation does not reflect her actual strength as a veteran 35 59 61.
  • Unusual evolution: Her progression is cited as an example of the imagination needed to turn an apparently unhelpful Trait into a powerful ability rather than remaining within conventional game-class expectations 81.

Immortal Bird and Orange Flames

Feng Ling's developed ability combines self-healing with highly controlled orange flames capable of burning Ghost Creatures. Her power and reputation place her far above ordinary players, and her distinctive flames make her difficult to impersonate 60 61 73 97.

  • Self-healing: She explicitly states that she can heal herself within her flames 61.
  • Reported rebirth: Rumors claim she can be “reborn” in flames after fatal injuries. This reputation contributes to the titles “Phoenix” and “Immortal Bird,” although the supplied passages do not directly demonstrate resurrection from a fatal injury 60.
  • Ghost-burning attacks: Burns attacking ghosts and spreads flames across groups of Ghost Creatures 59 60 61.
  • Fiery strikes: Concentrates flames around her hand to deliver an explosive punch 61.
  • Battlefield support: Uses fire to block ghosts advancing toward injured players and to obscure enemies while Su Bai attacks through the flames 60 61.
  • Flaming weapon: Uses a flaming sword during the confrontation in the Reception Room 239.
  • Precision: Burns away hair ties without damaging her hair and handles flames without harming herself or her clothing 59 240.
  • Flexible control: Changes the flames' methods of attack with a thought and shifts freely between offense and defense. Her strength depends on this control, not merely on high temperatures 237.
  • Advanced mastery: Su Bai describes her calm, precise control as though fire were a second skin. By Blood Moon Lake, she has grown stronger since their previous meeting and carries far more Red Moon Power than an ordinary player 482.

Resistance and Power Accumulation

  • Resistance to mind control: Qin Yuxuan's handshake does not plant a mental seed within her. Using the evidence in her companion's diary, she identifies this as proof that she is stronger than him 238.
  • Script resistance: Her increased strength allows her to escape the Blood Moon Lake script's control while other players remain caught in their assigned roles 482.
  • Long-term Red Moon exposure: Remaining in the Nightmare World allows her body to accumulate Red Moon Power continuously, helping explain her advantage over players who return to the Real World 537.
  • Environmental tempering: While struggling to stand in the hidden Mirror World space, she senses her body being tempered and expects substantial growth if she survives. The passage presents this as an anticipated benefit rather than a separately demonstrated ability evolution 257.

Mirror World Limitations and Blood-Fueled Fire

The Mirror World's overwhelming power suppresses Feng Ling's active abilities and weakens her physically. Unlike the earlier memory loss, she remembers her powers but cannot use them normally 248.

  • Residual fire in blood: Cuts her palm and uses her blood to ignite a wooden stick and the corridor wall. Even when her active ability is suppressed, her blood retains fire power 251.
  • Reduced effectiveness: These blood-generated flames are weak and difficult to control, and her palm wound remains unhealed. Blood Ghosts in the corrupted space regenerate the holes burned into their bodies 251 252.
  • Dependence on protection: In the hidden space containing the shattered mirror, she relies on Little Fire's protection to remain standing amid the dense bloody aura 257.

Observation and Survival Judgment

  • Notices that the lobby clock’s display of 98:100 cannot represent an ordinary time, leading her to the invitation to Room 204 28.
  • Identifies the stairwell woman’s hanging shadow, lowered head, and raised heels as signs of a ghost 27.
  • Recognizes the group’s role-playing strategy from the warning given by her rescuer, rather than independently deriving it 31.
  • Notices the Score Clock's 80-point total and concludes that two players have departed, leaving eight 52.
  • Warns Meng Zhi against trusting Qin Yuxuan, noting that he tried to establish familiarity without even asking her name 228.
  • Uses a deceased companion's diary to expose Qin Yuxuan's mental seeds, Complete Control ability, and probable method of murdering that companion through a controlled friend 238.
  • Questions why the Mirror Apartments creatures avoid directly killing players and investigates the possibility that their victims have been sent elsewhere 239 240.
  • Identifies the need to sever Doll Strings before the Blood Moon Lake auditions resume 485.

Leadership and Information Sharing

Feng Ling is the strongest member of an organization reputed to be the most powerful player group. Her prestige makes her an effective source of information: discoveries she brings back can be analyzed by her companions, spread among players, and posted on the Player Forum. Su Bai recognizes that most players would trust information attributed to her even if it sounds extraordinary 259.

Power Progression

Stage / Development Capabilities and Significance Evidence
Original Trait: “Never put a Band-Aid on crooked” Initially appears to suggest a minor bandaging-related Trait. Feng Ling discloses it while unaware of its actual developed form 29 61
Healing First known evolution of the Trait; retrospectively described by Feng Ling 61
Self-healing Healing develops into an ability focused on restoring her own body 61
Immortal Bird mutation During another game, self-healing mutates into healing within flames and offensive control of orange fire 61
Abilities forgotten in Happiness Residential Complex Two layers of memory confusion leave her unable to remember or employ her established powers, creating the appearance of a vulnerable newcomer 48 59 61
True memories and flame use restored Regains her identity and established orange-flame abilities; burns ghosts, protects the rear, and assists Su Bai in clearing a path 59 60 61
Precision control and mental resistance demonstrated Freely varies offensive and defensive flame use, forms a flaming sword, and resists Qin Yuxuan's mental seeds 237 238 239 240
Mirror World suppression and residual blood fire Active powers and normal self-healing are suppressed, but her blood still ignites objects; this substitute fire is weaker and harder to control 248 251 252
Tempering in the hidden mirror space Senses her body being tempered under extreme pressure and anticipates becoming stronger if she escapes alive 257
Further growth by Blood Moon Lake Su Bai confirms that she has grown stronger; her substantial Red Moon Power and precise control allow her to escape the script's control 482
Proposed integration with Su Bai's Puzzle Piece ability Su Bai proposes incorporating the base, shop, and people present without harming or restricting them. Potential benefits for Feng Ling include shared communication and accompanying him through rebirth, rather than a substantial direct power increase 648 651

Equipment / Items

  • Silver photograph pendant: A gift attributed to her grandmother containing a picture of Feng Ling with the parents in her initially recovered memories. Its disagreement with the apartment’s family portrait breaks her confidence in the false household; seeing the Red Moon immediately afterward restores a flood of memories, though this is not her final or fully reliable memory recovery 26 59 648.
  • Glasses: Worn for mild nearsightedness and reassurance. They become blood-smeared during the buried ghost’s attack. She discards them when her true memories return, but later uses glasses again as part of her understated appearance and carefully puts them away rather than destroying them at Blood Moon Lake 25 27 59 219 485.
  • Organization's party-forming item: Writing members' names on it gives them a high chance of entering the same game. Feng Ling secretly erases her name before Happiness Residential Complex to avoid entering with her companions 61.
  • Party contracts: After learning of her near-death experience during her amnesia, her companions insist on accompanying her into games. Such contracts are unusable while tracking Qin Yuxuan, permitting her to enter Mirror Apartments without her usual escort 249.
  • Deceased companion's diary: Provides evidence about Qin Yuxuan's mind-control techniques and the circumstances surrounding a Nameless Society companion's death 238.
  • Improvised wooden weapon: Takes two thick strips from a ruined coffee table in the Mirror World, gives one to Su Bai, and later coats her own strip with blood to ignite it 249 251.

Relationships

  • Parents — Her initially recovered memories say that both died when she was eight, and the two residents posing as her parents in Apartment 602 look entirely different from the people in her pendant photograph. Her later history contradicts that account: her mother died when Feng Ling was five while trying to prevent a debt-ridden drunk from selling her 26 648.
  • Grandmother — Appears in her early recovered memories as a village spirit medium whose warnings taught Feng Ling to avoid discarded money. Those recollections credit her with giving Feng Ling the photograph pendant and place her death shortly after Feng Ling's university admission; the memory recovery is later shown to be incomplete 25 26 48 59.
  • Su Bai — Rescues her while dressed in black, then joins her team in a different appearance. Feng Ling initially finds his disguised voice familiar but does not identify him as her rescuer. He already recognizes her and hints that they may meet again ten years later. When he saves her again, she recognizes the repeated words, voice, and wounds concealed by his earlier eyepatch and neck ribbon, helping trigger her true memory recovery 27 28 29 31 48 59.
    • She thanks him for saving her twice and repeatedly tries to recruit him into the Nameless Society. In his previous life, they were acquaintances and he repeatedly declined her invitations 61 65 251.
    • In Mirror Apartments, she initially fails to recognize him because his appearance and presence have changed substantially. She later identifies him as a potential ally, fights alongside him, and accompanies him into the Mirror World 219 220 239 242 249.
    • Their connection continues through chance meetings because she is stationed in the Nightmare World and they lack a useful way to contact one another. By the war preparations, she openly expresses her trust in him and supports his plan 495 648.
  • Ning Yan — Fellow Honghuai Normal University student and host of the Room 204 safe house. She disparages Feng Ling’s apparent inexperience but provides coffee, bread, and a regrouping signal. Later reunites with Feng Ling and the others at Building 1 and fights alongside them 28 29 31 52 60.
  • Fang Xiujie — Temporary teammate who offers to analyze her Trait, explains the survival plan, and gives her his real-world contact number for further guidance. After Feng Ling's established abilities return, her flames relieve the pressure on the rear and give him an opportunity to treat the injured 29 30 31 60.
  • Nameless Society members — Her companions are as important to her as family, and the organization's base is their shared home. They become highly protective after her amnesia-related near-death experience. She trusts their independent abilities and rejects the idea that the organization depends solely on her strength 59 249 648.
  • Lan Xingchen — Other members urge her to recruit him because his ability would benefit the organization and he also lives in the Nightmare World. Feng Ling distrusts his claims of atonement and considers Su Bai a better fit 65.
  • Qin Yuxuan — Target of an investigation into the death of one of her companions. She resists his mind control, exposes his methods, and sets him on fire, but a Strange Creature possessing his body escapes through a mirror. She later refuses to sympathize with his pleas after finding him in the Mirror World 238 239 249 251.
  • Lian Xiangyu — An ambitious Beastification user who declares that he will surpass her. They later participate in the Blood Moon Lake game, where Feng Ling disrupts his scripted role through revelations about Wu Heng and Su Bai 73 77 478 489 490 492.
  • Wu Heng — Encounters him during Blood Moon Lake and uses his relationship with Su Bai to push the script in an unexpected direction. During the war preparations, Su Bai explicitly introduces him to her and the Nameless Society as his nonhuman lover 482 490 492 648.
  • Zhi Yuan — Uses “Chiliu” as a code phrase to indicate a connection to Feng Ling and the Nameless Society. Su Bai infers that Feng Ling shared the phrase with a trusted member, but refuses to acknowledge it aloud 408.
  • Yu Jin — Participates alongside Feng Ling and the Nameless Society in the Human-Faced Forest expedition recalled by Su Bai; both report that its hazards exceed the descriptions in their guides 639.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Happiness Residential Complex: False Home

  • Enters the complex believing she is returning home for a Friday visit with her parents 25.
  • Finds their behavior unsettling, then discovers that the parents in her pendant photograph do not match the apartment’s family portrait 26.
  • Recovers an initial set of memories about her family and the game’s forty-eight-hour survival requirement, then flees Apartment 602. The impostors let her leave but tell her to return for dinner 26.
  • This recovery leaves her believing she is a newcomer; the complex's remaining false memories still conceal her veteran identity and developed abilities 48 59 61.

Rescue and Room 204

  • Escapes through the stairwell, passing a red-dressed hanging ghost, before witnessing a man apparently burying a wounded woman alive 27.
  • Attempts to rescue the woman, who reveals herself as a ghost and tries to strangle her. Su Bai intervenes with a sword, pins the ghost in the pit, and tells Feng Ling to play her assigned role 27.
  • Follows the lobby-clock note to Room 204, answers questions about her university and game experience, and joins Ning Yan, Fang Xiujie, and the disguised Su Bai 28.
  • Shares her encounter with the group and agrees to survive by playing along with the ghosts’ household roles. After leaving the safe house, she chooses the stairs rather than accompanying Su Bai in the elevator 31 32.

Unresolved Identity and Fate

  • When the scoreboard records two player deaths, Su Bai initially reasons that the victims must be among Feng Ling, Ning Yan, and Fang Xiujie 42.
  • The later revelation that Ning Yan and Fang Xiujie died three years earlier complicates that deduction rather than confirming Feng Ling’s fate 48.
  • Su Bai identifies a specific inconsistency in her newcomer identity: she uses “administrator,” a term he believes someone who has completed only a beginner game could not know. He concludes that her apparent memory recovery was incomplete 48.
  • Her immediate fate is resolved when she arrives alive at Building 1 with Ning Yan and Fang Xiujie. She has not yet recovered further memories and notices that the Score Clock indicates only eight remaining players 52.
  • Su Bai questions whether her remembered attempts to enroll in the popular swordsmanship elective really occurred during her supposed current freshman year, probing another inconsistency in her assumed identity 54.

True Memory Recovery and the Nameless Society

  • During the ghost assault at Building 1, Su Bai calls to Feng Ling and rescues her from another attacking ghost. The similarity to the earlier rescue, together with his voice and concealed wounds, allows her to identify him as the young man in black 59.
  • Memories of her companions and their home at Honghuai Normal University break the final layer of false memories. She restores her orange-flame attacks, burns the ghost attacking Qiu Man, removes her glasses, and releases her braids 59.
  • Her return to combat eases the pressure on the injured players and allows Fang Xiujie to heal them. The others identify her as the famous leader of the Nameless Society 60.
  • Explains her three years of experience, the party-forming item she deliberately avoided, and the development of her Trait into Immortal Bird. She assists Su Bai in carving a path through the ghosts and thanks him for both rescues 61.
  • Later discusses her distrust of Lan Xingchen and renews her invitation for Su Bai to join her organization 65.

Reputation Among Players

  • Her fame and distinctive abilities make the Nameless Society's leadership an effective source of authority. Peng Zhen claims to be a deputy leader to gain other players' trust, while Lian Xiangyu declares that he will surpass her 73.
  • When melted locks are discovered at the Lorimas Grand Hotel, players suspect Feng Ling because of her reputation for flames terrifying to Ghost Creatures. This is speculation about the intruder, not evidence that she participated in that game 97.
  • Su Bai regards elemental control as belonging at the top of a still-uncertain ability hierarchy and identifies Feng Ling as its most prominent recent example. He also notes that flame-control mutations are not unique to her 210.

Mirror Apartments and Qin Yuxuan

  • Takes Room 303, offers assistance to the other players, and warns Su Bai about his apparent poor health. She thinks he looks familiar but initially fails to recognize him because of his changed appearance 219 220.
  • Warns Meng Zhi against trusting Qin Yuxuan and joins Su Bai, Zhang Yibu, and Meng Zhi in exploring the Reception Room 228.
  • Uses her companion's diary to expose Qin Yuxuan's mind-control abilities and the probable circumstances of that companion's murder. She reveals her identity and attacks Qin Yuxuan with flames, but a possessing Strange Creature escapes through a mirror 238 239.
  • Clarifies that “Nameless Society” is an outside designation: her organization does not actually possess a name 239.
  • Recognizes Su Bai as another powerful ally and works with him against the blood-thread Ghost Creature 239 242.
  • Refuses to rescue Yue Zhengqing after his admissions of Real World killings and his dismissal of human law. She emphasizes that her organization still respects those laws 245.

Exploration of the Mirror World

  • Accompanies Su Bai into the Mirror World, where the dense power suppresses her abilities and weakens her. The passage closes before she can return 248.
  • Explains her companions' insistence on party contracts after Happiness Residential Complex and her reason for entering this game alone while tracking Qin Yuxuan. Despite the danger, she remains determined to investigate 249.
  • Supplies an improvised wooden weapon to Su Bai and uses her own blood to generate fire when they face Blood Ghosts. The flames are insufficient to prevent the ghosts from regenerating, and her wound does not heal normally 249 251 252.
  • Enters the hidden mirror space hand in hand with Su Bai, protected by Little Fire. She seeks knowledge of an unknown realm and senses that surviving its pressure could strengthen her body 257.
  • Questions the being near the shattered mirror about his nature, the world's former civilization, the Cataclysm, the Red Moon, and the mirror that became a Mirror Ghost 259 260.
  • Escapes alongside Su Bai when Chiliu dissolves the Mirror World and Mirror Apartments. Little Fire consumes the released bloody aura, and the survivors emerge into the Nightmare World 266.
  • The name “Chiliu” later becomes a code phrase associated with her and a Nameless Society confidant 408.

Blood Moon Lake and the Controlled Script

  • Reunites with Su Bai and other familiar players at the villa, again using an understated appearance with glasses and a braided ponytail 478.
  • Takes the script's maid-and-cook role while remaining able to step outside its control. Su Bai observes her increased strength, abundant Red Moon Power, and exceptional command of flames 482.
  • Insists that Su Bai remain in his room overnight and admit no one. The following morning, she warns that the affected players will be controlled again once auditions start unless the Doll Strings are severed 485.
  • Interrupts the repetitive argument among Lian Xiangyu, Ning Yi, and Shen Dong'er by announcing that Wu Heng, the script's “Master,” had a secret rendezvous with Su Bai, its gardener. Wu Heng confirms that he is with the gardener 489 490.
  • Pushes the revelation further by questioning the motives behind the Master's opposition to Lian Xiangyu's marriage. The resulting emotional shock makes Lian Xiangyu's Red Moon Power fluctuate and starts his Beastification, suggesting a way to disrupt the script's control 492.
  • Exchanges farewell nods with Su Bai as the game approaches its end; their continued association remains dependent on future chance meetings 495.

War Preparations Against the Red Moon Society

  • Su Bai recalls the Human-Faced Forest expedition in which Feng Ling and the Nameless Society sought a way to save humanity, only for the forest's depleted power and growing hazards to kill the expedition members in his earlier experience 639.
  • During preparations at the Nameless Society base, Feng Ling questions how quickly an ability can evolve. Su Bai explains that insufficient power is the main reason evolution normally takes time 647.
  • Chooses without hesitation to remain in the Nightmare World and fight. She and her companions regard the organization as their home and express firm trust in Su Bai's plan 648.
  • Recognizes Su Bai as the Mist Shop's owner, Player Forum ID 888, when he summons the shop at their base. He introduces Wu Heng as his nonhuman lover and proposes incorporating the shop, base, and everyone present into his Puzzle Piece ability without harming or restricting them 648.
  • The projected advantages of becoming a Puzzle Piece are primarily communication through public and private channels and the possibility of accompanying Su Bai through another rebirth. A return to an earlier time could produce two Feng Lings unless the versions merged or one devoured the other; these are prospective consequences, not a demonstrated event 651.
