Wu Heng stays close to Su Bai through several identities and controlled shells:

Background / History

Su Xuan and the Real World

The Ghost Shaman was an independent resident of Fog Mountain when Su Xuan sought his help reaching another world. After prolonged pestering, he made Su Xuan a child-sized Doll shell and allowed him through a hidden passage to the Real World. He also provided a mirror for communication and eventually permitted Su Xuan to release a little power, enabling him to become part of Lin Wan and Su Bai’s family 351 352.

The shell required repeated adjustments because it could not grow naturally. Its restraints also failed to contain every trace of Su Xuan’s Red Moon power: small leaks accumulated around the family and attracted Strange Creatures when Su Xuan was absent. During one such absence, the Ghost Shaman wore the discarded shell and saved five-year-old Su Bai from a third-floor window. The shell’s little finger broke, leaving an enduring memory that Su Xuan had lost it while rescuing his brother 353 355.

The Ghost Shaman initially forbade Su Xuan from returning because of the danger to the family. He relented after Su Xuan insisted and threatened to attempt the Void Sea himself. Together they upgraded the shell, although the Ghost Shaman estimated that even the improved body would last only about twenty years. They later learned that forces pursuing the Merfolk Remnants might locate Su Xuan in the Real World 356 357.

Su Xuan’s Final Request

In the timeline Su Bai understood as his “previous life,” the Ghost Shaman helped Su Xuan briefly revisit the Real World, where he found Su Bai mourning Lin Wan. When Su Xuan decided to search the Void Sea for a route into the past, the Ghost Shaman warned him that he could become lost permanently. Unable to dissuade him, he secured Su Xuan to Fog Mountain with a white cord and Silver Bells, using their pull and chime to guide him through the Sea’s illusions 359.

Su Xuan ultimately cut the cord and made himself a coordinate anchor in Su Bai’s shadow. His final message asked the Ghost Shaman to use the method he had left behind if Su Bai ever had no way out 359.

Losing Su Bai

Wu Heng initially regarded Su Bai as a responsibility entrusted to him by a friend. When contact with Su Bai broke in the Human-Faced Forest, he experienced panic for the first time and tore through space to reach him in three minutes. The Red Moon Society blocked his path despite his declaration that he had come only to retrieve a human important to him 640.

Finding Su Bai motionless, Wu Heng realized that he had become his only true attachment. His grief nearly unleashed a devastating eruption of power, but Su Xuan’s final message reminded him that another chance remained possible. After hearing this account, Su Bai concluded that there had never been a true rebirth 640.

Appearance

  • Cloaked figure: His early appearance beside Su Bai conceals much of him beneath a cloak 119.
  • Icy touch: His adult hand is cold and seemingly devoid of life, although touching Su Bai’s face and neck makes Su Bai’s skin grow warm 201.
  • Dark red eyes: Revealed when his black robe slips away during the battle against the Red Moon Society 657.
  • Variable shells: He appears through childlike Dolls and a human Player shell. The latter was initially made so hastily that it lacked facial features 495 515.
  • Concealed appearance: Despite encountering numerous incarnations, Su Bai notes that he has not seen Wu Heng’s true appearance 495.

Personality

The Ghost Shaman is ordinarily aloof, solitary, and difficult to involve in other beings’ affairs. Su Xuan describes him as cold toward almost everyone and historically neutral even when others tried to draw him into their conflicts. He values order and rules, particularly the need to prevent powerful Nightmare World beings from disrupting the Real World 355 622.

His restraint is not indifference to cruelty committed in his name. When the Fog City Lord claims authority over others’ lives, the Ghost Shaman denies possessing such a right himself and condemns the Lord for imprisoning and slaughtering Ghost Creatures while falsely claiming to be his follower 201.

With Su Bai, he is protective and increasingly open about his affection. He carefully avoids hurting him with his overwhelming power, refuses to leave him on blood-soaked ground, and quietly watches him through Xiao Wu’s shell. His usual authority gives way to visible nervousness when he proposes their marriage ceremony 119 200 498 658.

Abilities & Skills

Doll-Making and Remote Incarnations

His Doll-making inspires the Fog City Lord and provides the shells through which both he and Su Xuan interact with humans 200 353 515.

  • Remote presence: Controls the Thread-Wrapped Doll called Xiao Wu; its apparent sleep can indicate that he is occupied elsewhere 495.
  • Human disguise: A Doll shell can deceive observers into treating him as human. His Player shell does not leak the Ghost Shaman’s identifiable power 515 595.
  • Power containment: Develops shells intended to hold immense Strange Creature power without exposing the Real World to dangerous leakage 515.
  • Maintenance requirements: Su Xuan’s shells lacked independent consciousness and natural growth, requiring replacement or adjustment 353.
  • Capacity limits: An inadequate shell can crack under its occupant’s power; one temporary body supplied to Su Xuan could survive only a dozen or so minutes 359.
  • Uncertain reputation: Although legends credit the Puppeteer with conscious Dolls, Su Xuan describes his own shells as unconscious. The supplied accounts do not establish that every Doll shares the same capabilities 200 353.

Passage Between Worlds

He possesses unconventional means of reaching the Real World and created the Mist Shop, which links the two worlds 351 496.

  • Hidden passage: Sends Su Xuan across in a restrained Doll body. He tells Su Xuan that the passage can accommodate only a small amount of power 352.
  • Mirror connection: Maintains communication and observation across worlds, including a view of the Su Family home 352 355.
  • Spatial traversal: Tears through space to reach the Human-Faced Forest in three minutes during an emergency 640.
  • Void Sea guidance: Uses a cord anchored to Fog Mountain and Silver Bells to help Su Xuan retain his bearings 359.

Overwhelming Power and Fog

Merely releasing his power fills the Mist Shop with waves strong enough to leave the Fog City Lord’s avatar unable to resist 201.

  • Selective pressure: Directs oppressive power around Su Bai without causing him discomfort 200 201.
  • Avatar suppression: Silences the Fog City Lord and makes his Doll avatar disappear; the shop subsequently digests the captured portion of Dense Fog’s mind and power 201.
  • Battlefield defense: Uses fog to hold back flames from a massive explosion while Su Bai evacuates the surrounding fighters 657.
  • Unknown upper limit: His full strength remains unmeasured, including the destructive power that nearly erupts after he loses Su Bai 627 640.

Marriage Contract

The Marriage Contract binds him to Su Bai and carries power far above that of a low-grade confidentiality agreement 461.

  • Contract resistance: Its power surfaces inside Su Bai and instantly crushes an invading contract’s influence 461.
  • Ceremonial requirement: According to Wu Heng’s people, the marriage only truly takes effect after the traditional ceremony is completed 658.
