Background / History

Wang Dong grew up in the secluded Clear Sky Sect as its young sect master. Its isolation left her poorly informed about imperial politics, although Hua Mulan’s fame reached her. The two guardians she calls “First Dad” and “Second Dad” sent her to Shrek with a token; presenting it secured her admission without a recommendation letter 29 117 121.

She came to Shrek hoping to meet other prodigies and entered the boys’ dormitory under a male disguise. Her assigned roommate, Yang Lin, immediately attracted her interest through his appearance and reports that he had defeated several academy teachers 26 27.

Wang Dong is Tang San’s daughter. A strand of his Divine Sense resides within her Sea of Consciousness beside a trident, allowing him to intervene in her interactions with Yang Lin 31 39 75.

Wang Dong is proud, headstrong, and competitive. She initially prepares strict dormitory rules, but softens their wording after meeting Yang Lin. Eager to test herself against exceptional talent, she challenges him and devises restrictions she believes will secure her victory 26 27.

Her haughty manner often conceals embarrassment or affection. She protests Yang Lin’s teasing and hair-ruffling while increasingly accepting his company, calling him “big brother,” and trusting him to protect her secret. By the time she begins absorbing her soul bone, she is comfortable asking him to turn around rather than leave while she changes 31 54 71.

She becomes openly jealous of Jiang Nannan’s closeness with Yang Lin and disposes of the love letters he receives. Nevertheless, she can admit fault: after Jiang Nannan discovers her secret, Wang Dong'er apologizes repeatedly instead of defending her usual pride 74 116 131.

Wang Dong also develops an appetite for genuine combat. After killing an attacker with her Clear Sky Hammer, she describes academy matches as “playing house” by comparison, while acknowledging that the killing itself felt nauseating 134.
