Background / History

Mu En came from a great clan. His family and the Heavenly Dragon Sect shared an ancestral origin more than ten thousand years earlier, but belonged to different branches. Their separation over differing ideals left little affection between them by the time the sect was destroyed 62 80.

He suffered grievous injuries in his youth and survived into old age partly because of the Golden Tree’s abundant vitality. By the time Yang Lin arrived at Shrek, Mu En was already a Level 99 Limit Douluo, though his declining health limited his willingness to fight 24 51 85.

Mu En’s teacher merged his soul with the Golden Tree and once responded whenever Mu En reached out. Those responses stopped forty or fifty years before Mu En’s attempt to contact him in Chapter 101. Mu En assumed his teacher was displeased with his performance; he did not know that his teacher was being tortured inside the tree 101.

Although Mu En had looked down on commoners in his youth, age and historical research changed his views. Shrek’s sealed records showed him that Spirit Hall had been predominantly a commoner organization capable of surpassing the great clans and sects. These findings helped persuade him to remove Shrek’s recommendation-letter requirement 100.

Appearance

  • Frail build: Thin, bony shoulders, an aged face, withered palms, and callus-covered hands 29 86 100 101.
  • Beard: Frequently strokes his beard while considering a problem or addressing others 45 70.
  • Mobility: Often uses a wheeled chair and is also shown seated in a wicker chair woven from Golden Tree branches 43 53 80.
  • Usual expression: A genial smile and gentle gaze, even during tense encounters 43 85.
  • Haircut: Wu Liuqi’s styling makes him look noticeably younger and livelier; this is a change in appearance, not a cultivation breakthrough 26 28.

Personality

Mu En is warm toward talented young people and curious about abilities he does not understand. He treats Yang Lin and Wu Liuqi kindly, investigates the rules of Wu Liuqi’s hair-cutting talent, and regularly invites Yang Lin to play board games. His relaxed manner allows Yang Lin to tease him and address him informally 24 26 29 41 51.

His attachment to Shrek does not prevent him from recognizing its faults. He condemns the elders’ fixation on prestige, rejects their hostility toward the six-winged angel wielder, and insists that students harmed by Zhou Yi receive compensation. He values actual results against Evil Soul Masters over protecting the Inspection Corps’ reputation 45 46.

Mu En can be calculating as well as conciliatory. Yang Lin recognizes that he deliberately allows Hai Bodong and Toji Fushiguro to pressure Shrek’s elders before intervening, using the confrontation to weaken their arrogance and resistance to reform 84.

Repeated failures by his subordinates strain his composure. Xuan Zi’s mistakes leave him deeply helpless, while Yan Shaozhe’s attempted abduction provokes a furious beating. Nevertheless, Mu En continues preparing successors because he knows he has little time left 53 99 101 138.

Abilities & Skills

Level 99 Limit Douluo

Mu En stands at the pinnacle of the soul world, but his present condition is weaker than his prime 24 84 85.

  • Shrek’s elders regard him as their last source of protection when confronted by overwhelming opponents 83 84.
  • Against Red Fang, he is prepared to act if the academy’s other experts fail, even at the risk of being injured again 51.
  • He privately judges that he would have little confidence in defeating Toji Fushiguro without drawing on the Golden Tree 85.
  • After examining Yang Lin’s defensive ability, he remarks that even he would probably struggle to touch the boy without using spatial power; no such attack is demonstrated in that encounter 26.

Golden Tree Power and Spiritual Contact

The Golden Tree sustains Mu En’s life and provides power he can draw upon 85.

  • Releases Spiritual Power over the entire tree to contact his teacher’s merged soul 101.
  • Considers secretly using the Sea God’s Light during the visitors’ arrival, but abandons the idea to avoid provoking another confrontation 85.
  • Does not discover the torment occurring within the tree. Yang Lin suspects that Ah Yin’s interference has concealed it from him 86 101.

Talent and Bloodline Assessment

Mu En can inspect a person’s bloodline through a thread of Soul Power 100.

  • Detects that Man Sui’s taotie bloodline is exceptionally pure, without the impurities responsible for Xuan Zi’s endless hunger 100.
  • Concludes that, provided she survives, Man Sui can reach Limit Douluo 100.
  • Recognizes the exceptional potential of Yang Lin and Wu Liuqi after watching their entrance examination 24.
  • Comes to believe Yang Lin may lead the current era and become a deity, although the supposed historical cycle behind this belief was fabricated by Yang Lin through Hai Bodong 86 95 116.

Leadership and Negotiation

As Pavilion Master, Mu En directs disciplinary decisions, intelligence policy, academy reform, and succession planning 44 46 99 138.

  • Removes Yan Shaozhe as Martial Soul Department Dean and appoints Cai Mei’er 44.
  • Negotiates compensation with Hai Bodong rather than risk a disastrous battle 84 85 86.
  • Orders the abolition of the city lord recommendation-letter requirement 99.
  • Delegates a Pavilion meeting to Xuan Zi to prepare him to lead until Man Sui matures 138.

Equipment / Items

  • Wheeled chair — Used while moving around the freshman dormitory and during his intervention in Yang Lin’s compensation dispute 43 53.
  • Golden Tree wicker chair — His seat during academy crises and Pavilion discussions 80 85 99.
  • Ultimate Ice pendant — Obtained from Hai Bodong and passed to Ma Xiaotao. Its cold energy can suppress her evil fire for about a year; it is not presented as a permanent cure 86 101.

Relationships

  • Yang Lin — A gifted student Mu En initially offers to take as a disciple; Yang Lin declines. They become frequent board-game companions, and Mu En supports his demands for fair compensation. Mu En later resolves to befriend him as a potential future deity 24 43 51 70 95.
  • Wu Liuqi — Another prospective disciple whose unusual talent fascinates him. Cutting Mu En’s hair gives Wu Liuqi one level of Soul Power, but the benefit works only once per person 24 26.
  • Yan Shaozhe — His disciple. Mu En repeatedly reprimands him, removes him from office, and later beats him for attempting to abduct Hai Bodong’s student 43 44 99.
  • Xuan Zi — A longtime subordinate whom Mu En has watched grow up. Despite frustration with his failures, Mu En entrusts him with Man Sui’s protection and prepares him for leadership 53 100 138.
  • Man Sui — A young talent he calls Shrek’s future. Her pure taotie bloodline gives him hope that the academy can enjoy another century of peace after she matures 100 101.
  • Hai Bodong — Initially an aggrieved opponent seeking accountability from Shrek. Mu En settles the dispute through compensation and secures his help suppressing Ma Xiaotao’s evil fire 84 86.
  • Toji Fushiguro — A powerful visitor whose strength makes Mu En cautious. Mu En prevents him from continuing his attack on Gong Changlong and avoids covert measures that might provoke him 83 85.
  • Ma Xiaotao — His disciple’s student, whose evil-fire problem he tries to resolve. He obtains the Ultimate Ice pendant that allows her to cultivate safely for the time being 44 86 101.
  • Wang Dong / Wang Dong’er — A student he treats kindly. He advises her to absorb her fifty-thousand-year Golden Radiance Left Arm Bone promptly 53.
  • Long Xiaoyao — An old friend. Mu En suspects that he is accompanying Ye Xishui and may therefore be part of the Holy Spirit Cult’s strength 24 45.
  • Unnamed teacher — His former mentor, whose soul resides within the Golden Tree. Mu En continues trying to contact him without knowing why his responses ceased 101.

Trivia

  • Mu En borrows the expression “crouching dragon and fledgling phoenix” from Yang Lin and uses it sarcastically while berating three academy leaders 99.
  • The narrative attributes the era’s shortened Limit Douluo lifespans—roughly two or three hundred years—to Tang San’s extraction of the Douluo Plane’s life energy. It remarks that Mu En’s age would have counted as young ten thousand years earlier 132.
