Background / History
Bloodline Poison and Recruitment
Dugu Bo’s Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor martial soul left accumulated toxins within his body, while its inherited bloodline poison also afflicted Dugu Yan. He had considered mastering his toxins when younger, but abandoned the risk after her birth: he feared dying and leaving her without anyone to care for her 30 32.
Ning Chuan invited him to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect under the pretext of meeting Sword Douluo and Bone Douluo. Dugu Bo initially suspected that they wanted his medicinal herbs, then mistakenly believed they were arranging a match between Ning Chuan and Dugu Yan. Once the actual proposal emerged, he agreed to join if Ning Chuan could cure his granddaughter 28 29.
After witnessing Origin Restoration withstand Dugu Yan’s poison, Dugu Bo entrusted her treatment to Ning Chuan. Her bloodline toxins were completely extracted in just over an hour, and he immediately honored his promise. Ning Fengzhi formally appointed him the sect’s third guardian Douluo, although the appointment was not immediately announced publicly 30 31.
Opening the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well
Dugu Bo brought Ning Chuan and Sword Douluo to his secluded medicinal garden in Sunset Forest and granted the sect permission to collect its herbs. Ning Chuan then presented the Poison Scripture as a welcome gift, offering a way to control Dugu Bo’s toxins rather than remove them 31 32.
Sword Douluo claimed to have found the scripture in a collapsed cave in the Star Dou Great Forest. In reality, it was Ning Chuan’s system reward for recruiting Dugu Bo. Its immediate effects convinced Dugu Bo that it opened an entirely new path of poison cultivation, strengthening his sense of belonging to the sect 31 32.
Tang San and the Herb Garden
At Prince Xue Xing’s request, Dugu Bo helped drive Shrek Academy away from Heaven Dou Royal Academy. He subsequently sought out Tang San to investigate his resistance to poison. Tang San’s knowledge intrigued him, and he brought the young soul master to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, even considering him as a potential disciple for the sect 36 39.
Dugu Bo wagered permission to pick medicinal herbs against Tang San’s claim that he could make a hidden weapon capable of injuring him. After testing the resulting Mother-and-Child Soul-Chasing Courage, Dugu Bo lent him the Wishful Hundred Treasure Pouch and allowed him to harvest unsupervised. Tang San took nearly every herb in the garden 39 40.
Although furious, Dugu Bo recognized that the wager had not specified a quantity and refused to casually break his word. At Ning Chuan’s request, he instead reclaimed the Snow Swan Kiss at Blue Tyrant Academy. He rejected Tang San’s offer of detoxification and left once the herb and pouch were returned 40 41.
Service to the Sect
Dugu Bo and Sword Douluo captured a fifty-thousand-year Azure Abyss Soul-Eating Tiger for Ning Chuan’s fourth soul ring. During this outing, Dugu Bo realized that the extraordinary cultivation methods and opportunities he had received were connected to Ning Chuan, rather than independent discoveries by Sword Douluo 42.
He subsequently escorted sect members to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, returned Dugu Yan to Heaven Dou Royal Academy before the tournament qualifiers, and was registered among Glazed Azure Academy’s team-leading teachers 44 47 49.
When Heaven Dou’s rulers and academy commissioners questioned Dugu Yan’s rapid growth to level 49, Dugu Bo attributed it to a poison-type cultivation method he had developed. They accepted the explanation because of his reputation as Poison Douluo 55.
Appearance
- An elderly man with a beard, which he strokes while speaking with Ning Chuan 28.
Personality
Dugu Bo is solitary and morally ambiguous, but maintains personal principles and takes promises seriously. His commitment to joining the sect depends on Dugu Yan’s cure, not his own; her safety matters more to him than remaining independent 28 29 31.
He is initially suspicious of the sect’s invitation and demands practical proof before accepting Ning Chuan’s treatment. Once convinced, he becomes openly grateful and generous. His enthusiasm for poison research also makes him receptive to talented juniors, though Tang San’s exploitation of that trust destroys his goodwill 29 30 31 39 41.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Expertise
Ning Chuan identifies Dugu Bo as someone who studies, mixes, refines, neutralizes, and controls poison—not merely a martial-soul user who releases it 33.
- Can forcibly separate bloodline toxins, but originally lacked a way to prevent the extraction from damaging Dugu Yan’s organs and meridians 30.
- Maintains poisonous mist around his secluded garden, making him the most convenient person to retrieve herbs for the sect 32.
- His poison expertise does not extend to identifying every medicinal herb in the garden; Tang San recognizes plants that he cannot name 39.
Poison Scripture
The Poison Scripture establishes a symbiotic relationship between his poison and soul power, turning toxins that once harmed him into resources for cultivation 32.
- Connects apertures and meridians while circulating toxin-laden soul power 32.
- Nourishes his body and accelerates soul-power cultivation 32 41.
- Gives him complete control over his accumulated toxins after sustained practice, eliminating his need for external detoxification 32 41.
Jade Nether Poison Dragon
His evolved martial soul produces poison dragon miasma lethal on contact to anyone below Titled Douluo rank 41.
The following combat assessments are given when he reaches level 94, before his later advancement to level 95 41 47:
- Opponents below level 95 are described as severely outmatched in single combat 41.
- Only Titled Douluos at level 97 or above are stated to be able to defeat him reliably 41.
- Even against a stronger opponent, he can take every Titled Douluo below level 95 on the battlefield down with him 41.
- If killed, he loses control over the Snow Swan Kiss elixir’s medicinal power. His toxins can engulf a major city almost instantly, then spread across a duchy and devastate an eight-hundred-li radius 41.
Soul Cultivation Formula
Sword Douluo transmits the Soul Cultivation Formula directly into Dugu Bo’s spiritual sea of consciousness. Ning Chuan later provides its intermediate version 41 42.
- Cultivates the soul in addition to his existing poison and soul-power training 41.
- Must not be taught to anyone other than Dugu Yan, according to Sword Douluo’s explicit restriction 41.
Creation Spirit Seal
Dugu Bo receives a Creation Spirit Seal from Ning Chuan and tests its remote communication function with him and Sword Douluo 42.
- Allows long-distance communication between the three recipients 42.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wishful Hundred Treasure Pouch — A storage soul tool capable of holding living things. Dugu Bo offers it to Ning Chuan, who declines; he later lends it to Tang San and retrieves it with the Snow Swan Kiss inside 32 39 41.
- Poison Scripture scroll — His sect welcome gift and the foundation of his new poison-cultivation path 32.
- Mother-and-Child Soul-Chasing Courage — Paired iron-ball hidden weapons made by Tang San. Dugu Bo confirms that they can injure a Titled Douluo and become more powerful with the user’s soul power; Tang San promises to make more if supplied with materials 39.
- Snow Swan Kiss immortal elixir — Refined by Ning Chuan and consumed only after complete mastery of the Poison Scripture. It evolves his martial soul and greatly amplifies his poison 41.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and his highest priority. Concern for her prevents him from risking his life to master his toxins, and her cure motivates his entry into the sect 29 32.
- Ning Chuan — Recruiter and benefactor. Cures Dugu Yan, provides the Poison Scripture and immortal elixir, and gradually earns Dugu Bo’s trust with increasingly important secrets 31 32 41 42.
- Sword Douluo / Chen Xin — Fellow guardian Douluo and cultivation instructor. Teaches him the Soul Cultivation Formula and hunts a soul beast alongside him 41 42.
- Bone Douluo / Gu Rong — Fellow guardian Douluo. Dugu Bo informs him about the stolen herbs and later relays news of the group’s return to the sect 41 42.
- Ning Fengzhi — Sect master who formally admits him with guardian status equal to the sect’s two existing Douluos 31.
- Tang San — Initially a promising poison expert and prospective disciple; loses Dugu Bo’s goodwill after stripping the herb garden 39 40 41.
- Prince Xue Xing — Requests his intervention against Shrek Academy at Heaven Dou Royal Academy 39.
