Sakura was afraid.
Two months ago, an uncle she did not know had taken her away from her mother and sister and brought her to a new family.
The Matou Family.
She had gone from Sakura Tohsaka to Sakura Matou.
That uncle... was also her new father, Byakuya Matou. Her older brother was Shinji Matou.
For some reason, her brother Shinji disliked her intensely. Byakuya Matou, on the other hand, seemed relieved by her arrival.
She now had a grandfather named Zouken Matou.
Sakura did not like this grandfather.
Because he was always watching her.
That look in his eyes... made her very uncomfortable.
That day, Sakura cleaned her room alone.
She wet a towel, held it lightly in her hand, and bent down.
Her small, undeveloped body let her crawl under the bed and clean every corner of this little space of her own until it was spotless.

Suddenly, Sakura's hand seemed to touch some sort of switch. A small section of floor beneath the bed lifted, revealing the "treasure" hidden underneath.
It was a wooden box.
Sakura carefully took out the wooden box, put the floor panel back in place, and crawled out from under the bed.
Out of the darkness, with the dust brushed off its surface, the wooden box's patterns-rather old-fashioned by today's standards-finally saw the light of day again.
Driven by curiosity, Sakura gently opened the wooden box.
Inside was half a scale.
The scale's broken edge was charred black, as though tempered in hellfire, while its more intact portions shone like the purest silver.
The two were united in this half-scale the size of a fingernail, and the power upon it seemed to have crossed time and space, enduring to this day...
No.
It did not merely seem that way.
