Background / History

Sovell was created as an experiment by the White Dragon of Britain and subsequently abandoned. Vortigern found him in a forest of magical beasts and raised him as his adopted son. Sovell remembers affectionate moments with Vortigern, including being soothed to sleep while his father reviewed documents and receiving encouragement when he first lifted a sword 3 5 38.

At approximately seven years old, Sovell fled the Royal Court after his father’s experiments drove him to slaughter innocents. Refusing Sir Brian’s demand that he return, he jumped from a cliff. Merlin cushioned the fall with flowers and brought him to Avalon. Vortigern later publicly claimed that Sovell had died of a sudden illness 1 27.

Merlin offered him eight years of food and instruction in exchange for supporting Britain’s future Red Dragon king. He explicitly rejected treating Sovell as a weapon, instead hoping that he would become her companion, friend, and most trusted subject. Sovell accepted and began training alongside Artoria in Merlin’s constructed dreams 2 3.

Over those eight years, Sovell and Artoria met nearly 3,000 times. Their friendship deepened while his swordsmanship and magecraft improved. Before leaving Avalon, Sovell received a controllable projection of Rhongomyniad, made suitable for him through his wind affinity and Construction Origin 6 7.

Appearance

  • Natural coloring: Silvery-white hair and silver eyes, distinctive enough that Sovell conceals them to avoid recognition 11 14.
  • Facial features: Refined, delicate, and notably androgynous; his appearance can be mistaken for a girl’s at a glance 31.
  • Usual attire: A white robe and silver armor. He sometimes ties his hair into a ponytail and covers it with his hood 15 23.
  • Disguised appearance: Dark hair and blue eyes, produced through disguise magecraft or a lily worn in his ponytail 11 27.
  • Draconic features: Silver scales, claws, slit pupils, and horns manifest when he draws deeply on his dragon blood 2 7 18 37.
  • Mystic Eyes: Blood-red, gemstone-like eyes with hexagonal pupils when activated 3 22.
  • During Alaya’s possession: His normally silver irises become radiant gold 38 39.

Personality

Sovell is driven by a desire to protect Britain and prove that Vortigern’s betrayal of its people is wrong. He does not seek kingship: he considers battlefield defense better suited to him than the exhausting administrative work he watched his father perform. He also treats his agreement to serve Artoria as a personal obligation 5 6.

His violence is directed firmly against invaders and those who abuse civilians. Although he condemns their crimes without reservation, he rejects torture as something that merely dirties the hands of those administering it. He also wants ordinary people to learn to resist rather than depend entirely on powerful rescuers 32 33.

Trauma remains a major vulnerability. Being called a “monster” is enough to precipitate a breakdown and uncontrolled transformation. Nevertheless, he refuses Merlin’s offer to erase his painful memories, regarding them as his responsibility and blood debt rather than something he has the right to discard 18 20.

With friends, Sovell is teasing, playful, and sometimes boastful. He jokes with Artoria, plays tricks on Barghest, and complains openly about Merlin’s punishing training. He is also courteous toward elders and hosts, and is moved when Tristan expresses sincere concern for his future 2 6 16 24 27 47 49.

Abilities & Skills

Dragon Physiology and Mana Burst

Sovell’s half-dragon body provides exceptional strength and resilience. Reinforcing his heart into a dragon’s heart allows him to generate magical energy simply by breathing 2 4.

  • Strengthens muscles, bones, and heart with draconic magical energy; can retain reinforcement without displaying scales 2 13.
  • Remains stronger than an ordinary human even without magical reinforcement 31.
  • Uses dragon-kind Magic Circuits and Mana Burst independently of his sealed human magecraft 20.
  • Emits Dragon Might and roars that intimidate beasts or subdue phantasmal creatures 10 44.
  • Changes his pupils into vertical slits to improve vision in darkness 22.
  • Resists winter cold even without his insulating robe and armor 15.
  • Limits: At the beginning of his travels, reinforcement is not instantaneous. Emotional instability can also unleash uncontrolled dragon power 15 18.

Wind Magecraft

Sovell has a wind attribute and uses the fairy wind magecraft foundation of Avalon. His dragon blood allows him to learn techniques that ordinary human physiology makes difficult to employ 3 14.

  • Wind Lock: Binds opponents with chains of wind. A four-part incantation produces a greatly strengthened Fairy Wind Lock capable of restraining a giant King Beast 5 10.
  • Wind blades: Produces more than a million strengthened blades during his confrontation with the White Dragon. Merlin recognizes that Sovell’s modifications make them capable of threatening a Divine Beast-class opponent 36 41.
  • Movement: Uses wind for flight, transport, acceleration, and cushioning falls 10 11 36 45.
  • Defense: Creates Wind Walls and uses Wind King’s Hammer to break enemy formations 10 33.
  • Detection: Carries distant sounds through the wind, searches surrounding terrain, and locates incoming air currents 12 16 44.
  • Utility: Manipulates nearby objects and liquids with wind 15 47.
  • Limits: Artoria can break his early Wind Locks through strength, while Kelpie can intercept and dismantle his magecraft 5 45.

Construction Origin

Construction allows Sovell to understand structures and put that understanding into practice through creation and modification. Merlin considers it more valuable than his dragon body or magical-energy supply 15.

  • Analyzes magecraft formations, alchemical creations, and ordinary physical machines 15.
  • Deconstructs and adapts fairy magecraft for battlefield use 14 15.
  • Constructs the pseudo-core that binds Rhongomyniad’s projection to him 7.
  • Alters wind-blade structures to achieve effects beyond their usual power 41.
  • Recognizes Merlin’s signature in a ship’s Magecraft Array and identifies the copied design’s lack of precision 49.
  • Development goal: Single-step, incantation-free powerful magecraft is presented as a possibility, not a completed mastery 14 15.

Mystic Eyes of Submergence

His innate Mystic Eyes are jewel-class, described as the second-highest rank of Mystic Eyes 3.

  • Suppress a target’s strength, speed, stamina, and magical-energy flow through his gaze 3.
  • Erase his appearance from another person’s memory without harming them 22.
  • Briefly interfere with the White Dragon’s mind, creating an opening before Merlin’s arrival 36.
  • Limits: His immature body cannot yet express their full power; Merlin’s initial suppression test uses only the human portion of his power 3.

Martial Skills

Sovell’s principal discipline is the two-handed longsword, developed through eight years of training under Merlin and sparring with Artoria 6 7.

  • Wins a majority of his later training bouts with Artoria and occasionally disarms her 6.
  • Gawain judges Sovell’s swordsmanship superior to his own during their duel 13.
  • Uses flexible attacks and deliberate changes in reach to defeat Kay in a practice match 31.
  • Pursues proficiency with additional weapon types once his longsword technique reaches its stated theoretical limit 25.
  • Limits: Initially lacks spear experience and has poor coordination between sword and shield compared with Kay 29 30.
  • Receives basic archery instruction from Tristan but remains a beginner 50.

Healing, Disguise, and Automatic Defense

Merlin teaches Sovell practical magecraft intended to support a warrior’s survival 3.

  • Heals Barghest’s deep abdominal wounds and uses spells to ease his own pain 7 16.
  • Conceals his appearance, figure, and presence while traveling 11 14.
  • Senses disturbances in surrounding air through his Magic Circuits, allowing his body to defend automatically; this unintentionally causes him to seize Artoria’s wrist 28.
  • Uses calming magecraft to dispel Kelpie’s stunned state after his Dragon Roar 44.
  • Limits: The memory seal prevents ordinary human magecraft until Merlin removes it 20 41.

Communication with Phantasmal Species

Sovell instinctively understands what phantasmal creatures mean without knowing their language. This is an innate intuition, not magecraft; its precise source is unknown 49.

  • Understands and befriends Barghest despite communicating through her barks 16.
  • Persuades Kelpie to accompany his group after subduing her 44.
  • The intuition has not failed him in his documented conversations with phantasmal species 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Rhongomyniad: A solidified projection of the Tower of Radiance, the anchor securing the world’s surface and reverse side. Its pseudo-core is bound to Sovell, allowing him to reshape it into a longsword, spear, or staff 7 10 25.
  • Invisible Air / Wind King Scabbard: The Holy Spear’s controllable storm barrier. Sovell shapes it into a scabbard or shield, surrounds the weapon’s blade with it, and releases it for propulsion or defensive bursts 7 13 15 28 36 45.
  • Rhongomyniad’s seals: Merlin’s restrictions on the spear’s power. Used seals must be replenished to prevent unrestricted power from devastating the surrounding land; releasing five at once causes severe backlash 7 37 38.
  • White robe and silver armor: His graduation attire from Merlin provides near-complete insulation against harsh conditions. The robe can become a cloak 15 33.
  • Disguise lily: A flower worn in his ponytail conceals his natural white hair and silver eyes 27.
  • King Beast jerky: Meat from the bear slain near Orkney, used as a potent magical-energy supplement. Its strength causes nosebleeds in Kay and Bedivere 11 30 35.

Relationships

  • Artoria / Lia — Sovereign, longtime training partner, and romantic companion. Their friendship develops over eight years; they later exchange intimate affection, and Sovell promises not to leave her carrying Britain’s burdens alone 3 6 35 42.
  • Merlin — Rescuer and teacher. Trains Sovell in swordsmanship and magecraft, provides Rhongomyniad, and intervenes during his dragon rampage and near-fatal magical backlash 1 2 7 19 38 41.
  • Vortigern — Adoptive father and former king. Sovell cherishes memories of his care but rejects his later actions and refuses to return to court. Merlin distinguishes Vortigern’s fatherly affection from the White Dragon’s treatment of Sovell 5 35 38.
  • White Dragon of Britain — Biological father and creator. Occupies Vortigern’s body, regards Sovell as an experimental weapon, and threatens to remake him after he refuses obedience 36 37 38.
  • Sir Brian — Knight who taught the young Sovell to hunt and later tried to bring him back to the Royal Court. Sovell describes him as loyal and honorable 1.
  • Barghest — Rescued companion. Sovell heals, feeds, and raises the abandoned cub; his care and mana-rich food accelerate her development 16 33.
  • Kay Senor — Traveling companion and Artoria’s protective elder brother. Tests Sovell’s ability to protect her and develops a friendly, teasing rivalry with him 30 31 34 42.
  • Gawain — Rescued knight and friend. The two duel, swear to remember their wager over Gawain’s future allegiance to Artoria, and part on good terms 10 12 14.
  • King Lot — Rewards Sovell for saving Gawain. Sovell deliberately cultivates goodwill with Lot’s household for Artoria’s future court 11 12.
  • Morgan le Fay — Artoria’s elder sister and Merlin’s former pupil. Sovell feels an unexplained, immediate hostility toward her that goes beyond Merlin’s warning to be cautious 12.
  • Ector Senor — Elder knight who recognizes Sovell from Vortigern’s court, accepts Merlin’s assurance of his loyalty, and respects his privacy 27.
  • Bedivere Bedrydant — Ally in rescuing villagers. Sovell conceals Artoria’s identity from him and agrees that they will pledge allegiance together when Uther’s heir returns 34 35.
  • Kelpie — Phantasmal traveling companion and mount. Sovell subdues her with Dragon Might, then persuades her to join the group 44.
  • Tristan — Friend, temporary employer, and archery instructor. Their initially hostile encounter becomes a close friendship during six months in Cornwall 45 47 50.

  • Examines the ship prepared for their voyage and recognizes its reinforcing array as an imperfect copy of Merlin’s design 49.
  • After learning that war in France has not yet begun, remains around Cornwall for six months. The trio works for Tristan against nearby nonhuman groups and demonic beasts, while Sovell learns archery 50.
  • Their reputation contributes to a thirty-percent increase in migration to Cornwall City. When Merlin confirms that Ban and Bors are losing their war against Claudus, Sovell and his companions decide to leave and offer aid as the basis for an alliance 50.
