Background / History
Yuta’s childhood sweetheart, Rika Orimoto, died after the two had promised to marry. Unable to accept her death, Yuta unconsciously cursed her, binding her to him as the Special Grade Vengeful Cursed Spirit known as the Queen of Curses. Initially, he believed that she had cursed him instead 12 64.
Fearing that he could not control Rika and would hurt other people, Yuta initially accepted the prospect of execution and even asked Gojo to kill him. Gojo helped him reconsider, and Yuta began fighting for his right to live. He entered Jujutsu High under a suspended death sentence, still hoping for friendship and an ordinary life 12 93 99.
Appearance
- Heavy dark circles: A prominent feature when he first arrives at Jujutsu High 12.
- Withdrawn posture: Initially keeps his head lowered and his back slightly hunched, giving him a gloomy, timid appearance 12.
- White uniform: Marks him as a dangerous individual in the eyes of Jujutsu Society’s authorities 13 99.
- Temporary cursed markings: Appear at the corners of his mouth when he uses copied Cursed Speech against Kenjaku 152.
Personality
Yuta is gentle, considerate, and initially deeply insecure. Although he wants friends, his fear of Rika hurting others makes him instinctively withdraw from people. Even at his first classroom introduction, he volunteers to enter before Kaze rather than leave the uncomfortable first step to his fellow transfer student 12.
His kindness does not disappear as his confidence grows. He prioritizes healing his injured friends over pursuing Geto, readily agrees to teach his classmates Reverse Cursed Technique, and offers practical explanations when others tease Megumi. He enjoys being appreciated but becomes embarrassed by lavish praise 64 69 89.
Yuta eventually rejects the assumption that being mild-mannered makes him passive. He firmly insists on participating in reform efforts, challenges Kaze’s overprotectiveness, and explains that his earlier willingness to die came from fear of harming others—not an inability to defend himself. He also develops a playful side, cooperating with Kaze’s handling of Mahito and quietly enjoying misunderstandings among their friends 94 98 99 115 131.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Technique Copying
Yuta can copy cursed techniques he has seen. Kaze considers this ability especially useful for their plans, while Geto later requests his help because his technique can help “muddy the waters” 99 153.
- Teleportation: Learns a portion of Gojo’s Teleportation and uses it for travel 84.
- Cursed Speech: Commands Kenjaku to stop moving during the laboratory confrontation 152.
- Documented limits: The supplied account does not establish copying conditions beyond having seen a technique, nor does it specify duration or storage limits 99.
Reverse Cursed Technique
Yuta learns Reverse Cursed Technique in combat and can apply it to other people. His healing ability substantially reduces Shoko Ieiri’s workload 64 65 68.
- Healing others: Completely heals the injuries sustained during Geto’s attack on Kyoto Jujutsu High 64.
- Bone repair: Can regrow broken bone, but cannot yet regrow a severed arm at the time of Kaze’s accident 85.
- Scar removal: Successfully removes his own lingering burn scar on a later attempt. Whether the earlier failure resulted from lower proficiency or the wound’s nature remains uncertain 95.
- Medical limitation: Healing displaced ribs without first addressing their position risks driving them farther into damaged organs. After nearly worsening Kaze’s injuries, Yuta vows to learn basic medicine from Shoko 85.
- Teaching limitation: Willingly tutors his classmates, but struggles to explain the technique clearly and is relieved when Kaze takes over 69 71 86.
Queen of Curses
Yuta first relies on the cursed Rika to protect him and fight powerful spirits. After releasing her soul, he retains the Queen of Curses’ shell and works to recreate its combat form with his own cursed energy 14 64 67 110 163.
- Physical power: Rika initially tears apart a six-story cursed spirit with her bare hands 14.
- Unconscious combat assistant: The reconstructed Queen of Curses has no independent consciousness before Rika’s return 110 163.
- Restored companion: Kaze later summons Rika as a rational Berserker Servant through the retained shell and Yuta’s blood 163.
- Mad Enhancement: Using the Queen of Curses combat state causes the restored Rika to lose her reason temporarily; she recovers after battle 163.
Combat Training and Perception
- Practical training: Trains with Maki and Kaze, and participates in rotating mission and sparring partnerships 12 18 98.
- Sparring restraint: Cannot bring himself to attack Maki’s vital points, although he understands why she and Kaze train without holding back 35.
- Combat aptitude: Geto praises his tremendous offensive power, exceptional combat talent, and ability to learn Reverse Cursed Technique during a fight 65.
- Improved perception: The original Rika’s presence in his shadow interfered with his judgment. Without that interference, he immediately detects Mahito despite the curse suppressing his presence 109 110.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Enrollment and First Missions
- Enters the first-year class alongside Kaze. Rika’s eruption destroys part of the classroom and batters Maki, Toge, and Panda 12.
- During an early mission, calls on Rika and carries the injured Maki and two children away from danger 14.
- Entrusts the battle to Kaze while evacuating Maki, Sakura, and the children, then discovers Gojo and Shoko waiting outside the Curtain 15.
Geto’s Recruitment and the Kyoto Battle
- Briefly wavers when Geto condemns the higher-ups’ treatment of sorcerers, but refuses to defect after recognizing that the speech offers grand promises rather than a concrete reason to abandon his school 55 56.
- Defends Kyoto Jujutsu High against Geto. Unknown to Yuta, Kaze and Geto arranged the confrontation partly to help him earn credit and gain greater freedom 64.
- Defeats Geto, breaks Rika’s curse, and stays behind to heal the injured rather than pursue the retreating attacker 64.
Participation in Jujutsu Society’s Reform
- Examines records showing how established families send commoner sorcerers into uncertain missions to assess danger before deploying their own heirs 92.
- Reconsiders Geto’s call for resistance and comes to understand the need for Gojo’s reforms. After speaking with Kaze, decides that he can help bring light to Jujutsu Society’s darkness 93.
- Insists on joining Kaze’s efforts and shares Maki’s intelligence concerning officials who escaped punishment and people targeting their classmates 98 99.
- Takes part in the confrontation with Kenjaku, restraining him with copied Cursed Speech. Afterward, accepts a short assignment with the Time Vessel Association with Gojo’s approval 151 152 153.
Rika’s Return and Engagement
- Joins a summoning initially intended for Riko Amanai and supplies more blood than anyone else 162.
- His blood and the Queen of Curses’ retained shell instead enable Rika Orimoto to return as a rational Berserker Servant 163.
- Later hands out invitations for an engagement celebration. His classmates initially mistake them for wedding invitations until Gojo checks them 181.
Notable Quotes

“After all, ours is pure love!” 63
“The choices I make come from my own will. They’re conclusions I reached by thinking things through myself.” 94
“After Gojo Sensei talked me through it, I fought for my right to live too!” 99
Trivia
- In an animation viewed by Kaze, Yuta is the main story’s protagonist rather than Yuji Itadori; Kaze appears as his fellow transfer student 157.
- Once exorcises a fire-breathing cursed spirit without injury, only to burn himself while using its remaining flames for outdoor grilling 95.
- Gives the most blood during the summoning simply because he cuts much harder than the others, not because the ritual assigns him a larger contribution 162.
- His engagement makes him an exception among the students, teachers, and other sorcerers his classmates know, most of whom are single 181.
