Background

Lina was raised in Zaun alongside her brother, Li Wei. She attended Piltover University without a surname and initially tried to fit into Piltovan society, even adopting its clothing, makeup, and habits while distancing herself from Zaunite food and culture 7 196.

Her position as a Zaunite student made her vulnerable to discrimination. Although her thesis outline was judged roughly equal to Kaya Ferros’s, Jayce selected Kaya for the sole research-group opening; Viktor later suggested that Lina’s Zaunite background may have affected the decision and offered to advocate for her 7. She also endured exclusion and ridicule from Caitlyn Ferros for roughly a year 128.

Li Wei’s transformation into Janna’s Chosen changed Lina’s outlook. She became an enthusiastic supporter of Janna’s Ideology, whose goal of improving Zaun gave her a purpose greater than escaping her hometown 31 34. By the time she led a Wind Taker social-survey team in the Undercity, she had shifted from wanting to leave Zaun to seeking to understand and transform it 119.

Appearance

Lina is a slender young woman with delicate, refined features and long black hair. Her appearance was often read as conventionally Piltovan despite her Zaunite origin 7 26.

  • Usually well-dressed, with a gentle and composed bearing in later appearances 522.
  • Wore a wide trench coat over brass-colored Hextech armor during her social-investigation work 121.
  • The armor’s Hextech engine emits a faint blue light from her chest 121.
  • Was described as wearing neat braids and leather boots during the Bilgewater rescue operation 196.

Personality

Lina is compassionate, principled, and strongly identified with the Wind Takers’ duty to protect others. She makes difficult tactical decisions under pressure, then personally risks herself to reduce the harm caused by those decisions. After ordering the bombing of augmented warriors, she overloaded her armor and entered the blast zone to shield Jinx 122 123.

She is not fearless. Lina openly trembles in battle, worries about her lack of strength, and compares herself unfavorably to exceptional figures such as Zac, Viktor, and Seraphine 123 187 188. Nevertheless, she repeatedly acts despite that fear.

Lina also struggles with ambition. Her punishment after the Caitlyn kidnapping, along with the scrutiny attached to being Li Wei’s sister, sharpened her desire for achievement, recognition, promotion, and the chance to become a hero in her own right 135 187 190. Tahm Kench exploits these desires, but Lina ultimately accepts that ambition is not shameful if it remains tied to her ideals and responsibility toward others 196 198.

Abilities & Skills

Janna-Derived Faith Arts

Lina can borrow divine power through prayer, hymns, and her faith in Janna.

  • Sings with fellow Wind Takers to summon wind that redirects incoming rockets and strengthens their bombs 121.
  • Manifests visible Threads of Faith to identify people with faith in Janna and the Wind Takers’ ideals 125.
  • Uses an Azure Finch manifestation to contact Li Wei over long distances 191.
  • Deflects Gangplank’s fleet-wide cannon barrage with wind magic 200.

Demonic Power

Lina possesses powers acquired through successive bargains with Tahm Kench, the Demon of Desire.

  • Giant Tongue Lash — summons enormous tongues from conjured pools of water to strike and scatter enemies 196 198.
  • Abyssal Voyage — travels through water portals across Bilgewater; she also considers using it to transport personnel and supplies between Bilgewater and Zaun 198 201.
  • Can create water portals beneath enemies and swallow pirates through them after receiving greater power from Tahm 199.
  • Her strongest attacks are energy-intensive; prolonged fighting or superior numbers can exhaust her 198.
  • Her bargains place her body and soul at stake, although Tahm finds her ideals frustratingly resistant to the corruption he seeks 199.

Research and Engineering

Lina has scientific training and practical technical experience.

  • Produced a university thesis design competitive with Kaya Ferros’s 7.
  • Served as a weapons technician on the Siren, training sailors in the use, maintenance, and repair of Calamity Rockets 185 187.
  • Returned to Zaun to research Hextech rockets at the Aerospace Dynamics Institute 522.

Investigation and Leadership

Lina developed into a capable field organizer and investigator.

  • Led a Wind Taker social-survey team through Zaun’s Undercity, gathering information on living conditions, industry, and control of raw materials and export routes 119.
  • Led a team protecting Zac’s parents from Cybernetic Warriors, coordinating armor, bombs, and wind-based defenses 121 122.
  • Took responsibility for the consequences of the Bilgewater prisoner rescue after being appointed temporary commander 196.

Equipment

  • Hextech armor — Viktor’s improved brass-colored armor, issued to social-investigation team leaders. It includes a Hextech power engine, protective shield, rear thrusters, and an arm-mounted miniature rocket launcher 121 122 124.
    • Its shield can nearly deplete its Hextech Gem when used at full power 123.
    • Lina lost the armor after being removed from her Wind Taker positions following the Caitlyn incident 135.
  • Personal firearm — carried at her waist during the confrontation between Jinx, Caitlyn, and Vi 140.
  • Weapons-technician tools and training — used to support the Siren’s Calamity Rocket refit 185 187.

Relationships

  • Li Wei — Older brother and Chairman of the Wind Takers. His transformation and Janna’s Ideology inspire Lina’s commitment to changing Zaun; she seeks his guidance but sometimes hides dangers from him, including her encounter with Tahm Kench 31 119 191 192.
  • Jinx / “Jessica” — Adoptive younger sister and initially an undercover agent sent by Silco. Lina saves her during the Cybernetic Warrior attack, accepts her despite learning her identity, and remains loyal even after Jinx causes serious trouble 122 124 130 140.
  • Viktor — Mentor and early advocate. He recognizes the likely bias in Lina’s failed research-group assessment and equips her with Hextech armor for her Wind Taker leadership role 7 121.
  • Caitlyn Ferros — Former school rival who targeted and isolated Lina. Lina later regards Caitlyn as politically naïve rather than personally important, though their conflict intensifies after Jinx kidnaps Caitlyn 128 130.
  • Tahm Kench — Demon who tempts Lina with power and forms multiple bargains with her. Their relationship is adversarial and transactional: Tahm seeks to cultivate her desires, while Lina uses his power toward Wind Taker goals 192 196 199.
  • Sarah — Wind Taker captain whose apparent danger at the Buhru temple helps drive Lina into Tahm Kench’s trap 193.
  • Zac — Ally encountered during the investigation into attacks on his parents. Lina initially doubts his unusual form, then recognizes his faith and usefulness to the Wind Takers 121 125.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Piltover University

Lina competes for a place in a research group while confronting the prejudice attached to her Zaunite identity. Viktor’s intervention gives her hope after Jayce chooses Kaya Ferros despite the candidates’ comparable work 7.

Conversion to Janna’s Ideology

Li Wei’s public declaration as Janna’s Chosen and his explanation of Janna’s Ideology transform Lina into one of its most focused student supporters. Her Threads of Faith become visible alongside Viktor’s, confirming her belief 31 34 35.

Zaun Investigation and Jinx’s Arrival

As a Wind Taker field leader, Lina investigates the Undercity and helps defend Zac’s family from Cybernetic Warriors. She rescues Jinx, then known as Jessica, from her own team’s bombing run and becomes the first person to offer her unwavering sisterly care 119 122 125.

Caitlyn Kidnapping and Discipline

Jinx kidnaps Caitlyn in retaliation for Lina’s past mistreatment. Lina refuses Jinx’s violent solutions, brings both girls before Li Wei, and is subsequently stripped of her positions, barred from promotion for two years, and assigned community service for shielding Jinx from the consequences 130 135.

Bilgewater and Tahm Kench’s Bargains

Assigned as a weapons technician aboard the Siren, Lina travels to Bilgewater with Jinx. Tahm Kench exploits her insecurity and desire to become a capable, admired hero, leading her to accept demonic power and increasingly costly bargains 185 192 199.

Lina uses those powers to rescue prisoners from Gangplank’s execution ground, challenge pirate reinforcements, and stand against Gangplank’s fleet. The Buhru ultimately intervene to protect her and the docks from the fleet’s barrage 196 198 200.

Foreign Aid and Rocket Research

After the Ionian war, Lina spends two years as a foreign aid worker in Ionia, contributing to land reform, social transformation, and economic development. She later returns to Zaun as an outstanding foreign-aid representative and joins the Aerospace Dynamics Institute’s Hextech rocket project alongside Jinx 522.
