Background

Janna was born when the faith of ancient people praying to the wind coalesced into a wind spirit. Her original nature is bound to protecting humanity: faith in her strengthens her, while abandonment causes her to fade. 2 34

Her worship was weakened when Shuriman rulers suppressed her as a false idol, destroying her temples and religious lineages. More than two centuries before the main story, she spent nearly all of her power protecting victims of the Great Canal Explosion from the resulting earthquake and tsunami; the loss left her unable to manifest regularly, accelerating the decline of belief in her. 2 32 68

After Li Wei is resurrected and becomes her Summoner, Janna is forcibly teleported to him and initially believes herself enslaved by an overwhelmingly powerful being. Li Wei instead commits to rebuilding her faith through a modernized doctrine, leading Janna to recognize that her old approach no longer suits the changing world. 2

Janna’s renewed faith is built around the Wind Takers and the ideal of Great Harmony. Under this system, her followers are encouraged to see her not as an omnipotent savior, but as a guide whose power originates from the people themselves. 31 32 34

Janna most often appears as the Azure Finch, a small blue bird with alert, intelligent eyes that frequently perches on Li Wei’s shoulder. 2 32
