Background / History

Childhood and Name Change

Born Yu Tianyuan, he is the unacknowledged son of Chen Weier and the Heavenly Dragon Sect’s master, a Titled Douluo. His mother was an ordinary maid without innate soul power; his conception followed the sect master’s sexual assault against her. She later supported their impoverished household by washing clothes 1.

An orphan in his previous life, Tianyuan treasured his mother and hoped that awakening a powerful martial soul would let him give her a better life. Instead, he returned from his awakening to discover that she had died. Blaming the Heavenly Dragon Sect for her suffering, he swore revenge against its lineage 2.

After her burial, he abandoned the surname Yu and became Chen Tianyuan. He left Dragon City with Zhang Lexuan, taking only his mother’s silver hairpin 3.

Life at Shrek Academy

Zhang Lexuan brought him to Shrek despite his being younger than its normal admission age. Mu En recognized his exceptional martial souls, introduced Bei Bei as his older brother, and secured his designation as the Sea God Pavilion Master successor after Xuan Zi. The academy planned to prioritize his development as a traditional soul master, while leaving soul-tool study open to him 3 4 5.

Tianyuan initially lived with Zhang Lexuan and Bei Bei. His training combined soul-beast lessons, nightly cultivation, and substantial academy resources. Eight years later, he and Bei Bei remained as close as brothers, although his ultimate attribute slowed his cultivation after level thirty 5 6 8.

After reaching level forty, Mu En told him that the Outer Court had nothing further to teach him. Following his fourth soul hunt, his enrollment transferred to the Inner Court, and he returned to the second floor of Zhang Lexuan’s home 18 21.

Personality

Tianyuan’s attachment to his mother shapes both his gratitude and his resentment. He regards Mu En and Zhang Lexuan as genuine family, and his attempt to obtain the Spirit-Devouring Carving Knife is partly motivated by a wish to prolong Mu En’s life. His childhood hatred nevertheless persists, requiring Electrolux to intervene when revenge threatens to cloud his mind 13 20 22 23.

He values fair competition rather than privilege. Despite his connection to Mu En, he does not use his status to retaliate when Zhou Yi deliberately makes things difficult for him. He also regards He Caitou’s place as rightfully earned rather than something he should displace through connections 29.

In combat, he is composed, competitive, and willing to take extreme risks. He remains calm under a ten-thousand-year beast’s pressure and later endures a potentially fatal martial soul transformation. His generosity toward Huo Yuhao contrasts with his mischievous treatment of Xu Sanshi, whom he tricks out of a Mystic Water Pill.
