Background / History
Warning of Chiya’s Rise
Konan stood beside Nagato when Black Zetsu reported that Chiya Uchiha had killed Konoha’s leaders and Itachi, taken control of the village, and severely injured the masked “Madara.” Both she and Nagato were shocked that he had forced the masked man to escape using Izanagi 23.
When Chiya entered Amegakure and disrupted Nagato’s Rain Tiger at Will Technique, Konan recognized him as the man rumored to have burned down Konoha. Nagato instructed her to notify the Six Paths of Pain while the village’s defenders confronted the intruders 38.
Defeat at Amegakure Tower
Konan intercepted Chiya, Sasuke, and Izumi near the tower, transforming falling rain into a vast field of paper weapons. Presenting herself as God’s emissary, she warned them against entering Nagato’s domain. Chiya’s heat wave incinerated her paper projectiles and carbonized her explosive tags before they could detonate 39.
Chiya then enclosed her in a flame barrier. Its heat burned away her wings, causing her to fall and suffer burns. He stepped on her face and demanded that Nagato appear. Deva Path Pain dispersed the flames with Shinra Tensei; Konan apologized for her defeat and was ordered to stand down 39 40.
Final Defense of Nagato
After the Six Paths were destroyed, Konan urged Nagato to escape through an emergency passage. Chiya reached their chamber before they could leave. She shielded Nagato and attacked with two enormous paper spears, but Chiya immobilized her with Rikujōkōrō and pushed her aside 45.
Despite the restraint, Konan forced out her remaining chakra and burned her life force to activate hundreds of millions of explosive tags concealed throughout the chamber. The trap had originally been prepared for “Madara”; she used it against Chiya in an attempt to kill them all rather than lose Nagato. Chiya’s Dankū blocked the explosion, leaving him unharmed. Konan was badly injured and could not prevent Nagato’s death or the seizure of his powers 46 47.
Submission and Administrative Appointment
After Nagato died, Konan asked Chiya to kill her so she could join Nagato and Yahiko. Chiya instead demanded that she manage Amegakure and the Akatsuki’s finances. Seeing him clear the rain clouds and bring sunlight to the ruins briefly broke her resolve to die, and she knelt in submission 47.
Her grief returned in the following chapter, and she attempted to kill herself with explosive-tag-laced paper. Chiya stopped her with Banshō Ten’in and dispersed the technique. He argued that her death would leave Amegakure vulnerable to the great nations and destroy what Yahiko and Nagato had protected. In return for her service, he promised to preserve the village, allow their gravestones to remain, and defend the territory 48.
Konan accepted the positions of chief treasurer and acting administrator to safeguard the village and Nagato’s legacy. She gathered Nagato’s remains and then guided Chiya into the Akatsuki’s underground treasury, placing its remaining assets under his control 48.
Consolidating Flame Emperor City
During Chiya’s three-day seclusion, Konan and Sasuke guarded him and handled the village’s reorganization. Konan later reported that disobedient former Akatsuki members had been executed, while the remaining elites had been divided among the Flame Emperor City Guard. She also confirmed that the explosive-tag stockpile had been accounted for and was ready for use 49.
Watching Chiya permanently clear the Land of Rain’s clouds, Konan thought of Yahiko and began to consider whether Chiya’s rule might offer a path to peace, despite how it had been established 50.
Appearance
Konan is described as a coldly beautiful woman whose paper wings give her the appearance of an angel 23 39.
- Hair: Short, light purple hair with a pinned paper flower 39.
- Eyes: Pale orange 39.
- Clothing: A black robe patterned with red clouds 23 39.
- Combat manifestation: Huge white paper wings, surrounded by paper butterflies 39.
Personality
Konan initially maintains a cold, detached demeanor as Nagato’s emissary. Insults to Nagato and Yahiko’s dreams provoke fierce resistance: even when outmatched and nearly depleted, she places herself between Nagato and Chiya and continues fighting 39 45 46.
Her attachment to Nagato is so strong that his death leaves her unwilling to live. Her eventual allegiance to Chiya is not forgiveness or uncomplicated loyalty; she accepts a humiliating loss of freedom because protecting Amegakure and preserving her companions’ legacy become reasons to survive 47 48. By Chapter 50, her resignation is accompanied by tentative hope that his power might end the country’s suffering 50.
Abilities & Skills
Dance of the Shikigami
Konan manipulates chakra-infused paper on a massive scale, including transforming falling rain into sheets of paper 39.
- Forms lances, spears, shuriken, senbon, and butterflies from paper 39 45.
- Uses Paper Shigure to blanket the iron bridge with hardened shuriken and senbon 39.
- Produces projectiles capable of piercing steel bridge decking; her paper is described as comparable to steel in hardness 39.
- Her specially treated paper is waterproof and resists ordinary fire, but cannot withstand Ryūjin Jakka’s extreme heat 39.
- Her paper spears collapse when Rikujōkōrō interrupts their sustaining chakra 45.
Paper Wings and Paper Body
Konan creates large paper wings for flight, and portions of her body are depicted as paper when damaged 39 46.
- Hovers above the battlefield while directing her attacks 39.
- Loses flight when Chiya’s flame barrier ignites her wings 39.
- Following the tower explosion, part of her body becomes charred paper and drifts away; this does not prevent severe injury or exhaustion 46.
Explosive-Tag Techniques
Konan mixes high-potency explosive tags into her paper attacks and prepares large concealed traps 39 46.
- Uses a detonation mode of Paper Person of God against Chiya, but his heat destroys the tags before their inscriptions activate 39.
- Conceals hundreds of millions of tags within Amegakure Tower’s floor, walls, and ceiling as a final defense for Nagato 46.
- Activates the tower trap while restrained by overexerting her chakra and life force 46.
- Cannot penetrate Chiya’s Dankū with the resulting explosion 46.
Administration and Financial Management
Chiya retains Konan for her knowledge of Amegakure, control over its affairs, and access to the Akatsuki treasury 48.
- Assumes responsibility for governing Flame Emperor City and safeguarding its finances 48.
- Participates in reorganizing former Akatsuki personnel into the city guard 49.
- Accounts for the explosive-tag stockpile and reports its readiness 49.
Equipment / Items
- Explosive tags — Used in projectile attacks and the tower’s hidden defensive trap. The deployed trap contains hundreds of millions; Konan later reports a total stockpile of six hundred billion accounted for 39 46 49.
- Akatsuki treasury access — Holds access to the underground vault containing gold, silver, and explosive tags accumulated through mercenary and black-market work 48.
- Red-cloud robe and paper flower — Her distinctive clothing and hair ornament 39.
Relationships
- Nagato / Pain — Longstanding partner and the person she repeatedly risks her life to protect. His death drives her to attempt suicide before she commits to preserving his legacy 39 45 46 48.
- Yahiko — His dream remains central to her convictions. Protecting the village associated with that dream motivates her submission to Chiya 39 48 50.
- Chiya Uchiha — Her conqueror and Nagato’s killer, later her ruler. She serves him under an agreement centered on Amegakure’s survival and the protection of Yahiko and Nagato’s memorials 46 48.
