Background / History
Madara was a dominant fighter of an earlier era and a lifelong rival of Hashirama Senju. Chiya distinguishes him from Obito as the genuine warrior who challenged Hashirama and faced the Five Great Nations; Madara himself repeatedly treats Hashirama as the benchmark for a worthy opponent 19 70 76.
After reading the Uchiha Stone Tablet, Madara developed the Eye of the Moon Plan, believing Infinite Tsukuyomi would bring lasting peace. Unknown to him, Black Zetsu had altered the tablet and guided his choices to prepare for Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s resurrection 105 108 120.
Madara gave his Rinnegan to Nagato and expected Nagato to restore him through Rinne Rebirth. He also groomed Obito to continue the plan and placed a cursed seal inside him as a resurrection contingency. Obito later operated under Madara’s name, an impersonation Chiya exposed 17 65 73 105 106.
Appearance
Madara has long black hair and wears dark red, layered armor over close-fitting black clothing. His appearance changes substantially with reanimation and later transformations 65 73.
- Reanimated body: Pale, cracked skin and murky gray-brown eyes with cracked whites; he has no heartbeat or ordinary sensation of pain 65 73.
- Hashirama’s face: Embedded in his chest, visibly cracking after Chiya nearly destroys his soul 65 76.
- Perfected form: Reanimation markings vanish. He is described with an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan in his left eye and a Rinnegan in his right 111.
- Six Paths form: A cloak covered in black markings, nine floating Truth-Seeking Orbs, and a nine-tomoe Rinne Sharingan 114.
- Gate of Death: Surrounded by blood-red vapor that persists after Chiya’s taijutsu counterattack 115 116.
- Final documented condition: Both eyes permanently blinded and his Six Paths Cloak increasingly cracked 119.
Personality
Madara is proud, domineering, and intensely drawn to challenging battles. He initially regards Chiya as an interesting younger Uchiha, then becomes delighted when Chiya withstands attacks that ordinary shinobi cannot approach. Even a near-fatal defeat prompts enthusiastic praise: he acknowledges that Chiya has brought him closer to true death than Hashirama ever did 65 67 75 76.
His contempt for weaker fighters extends to his own forces. He calls battlefield combat childish, launches attacks without regard for allies, and treats reincarnated shinobi as expendable pawns. Nevertheless, he is perceptive enough to recognize that Chiya’s sword operates outside the chakra system and to reject Kabuto’s confidence in Orochimaru’s spiritual attack 70 74 76 81.
Repeated humiliation turns his excitement into obsession. After losing in ninjutsu, ocular techniques, and taijutsu, he sacrifices eyes through Izanagi rather than accept defeat. Black Zetsu’s betrayal finally breaks his convictions, leaving him motionless as he realizes that his supposed peace plan served someone else’s purposes 113 115 117 120.
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan and Limbo: Border Jail
Madara’s Rinnegan produces four invisible Limbo clones that attack from an alternate dimension 73 112.
- The clones are described as possessing his strength and Rinnegan abilities 112 113.
- Ordinary Sharingan and Byakugan cannot detect them; Chiya’s Six-Tomoe Rinnegan allows him to see their movements 112 113.
- Chiya first intercepts them with his own Limbo clones, then later overwhelms them with twice as many shadows 73 113.
Susanoo
Madara uses Susanoo for defense, sword attacks, and large-scale combat 67 70.
- Initial form: Rib-shaped armor and a skeletal arm wielding a chakra blade 67.
- Perfect Susanoo: A hundred-meter armored warrior with wings and enormous swords; initially blue and later described as purple 70 111.
- Majestic Attire: Encases the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path in Susanoo armor 74 75 89.
- Divine Sky Strike: Uses four arms and four blades to launch intersecting sword waves that cut off retreat 75.
- Chiya melts or burns away its armor and weapons, including both blades of the perfected form 70 111 117.
Tengai Shinsei
Madara summons enormous meteorites onto the battlefield, making no distinction between allied and enemy forces 68 74.
- Uses a single massive meteor during the opening battle and two more during his renewed assault 68 89.
- Later summons four mountain-sized meteorites over the Land of Iron 111.
- Chiya splits, erases, or burns away every documented meteor attack 68 89 112.
Fire Release
Madara’s Majestic Destroyer Flame releases a sea of fire spanning several kilometers, with waves dozens of meters high 70.
- The attack threatens Chiya, the Allied Forces, and the White Zetsu indiscriminately 70.
- Chiya extinguishes it with Ryūjin Jakka 70.
Wood Release and Hashirama Cells
Hashirama’s cells provide restorative power and access to Wood Release techniques 73 75 111.
- Deep Forest Emergence: Creates a forest with paralyzing pollen; Chiya burns both away 73.
- True Several Thousand Hands: Appears in Madara’s final combined attack with Susanoo and Six Paths Senjutsu 118.
- Hashirama’s cells restore his perfected body to its prime 111.
- Their regeneration cannot fully overcome the lingering heat of Chiya’s later attacks 114 116.
Reanimation and Regeneration
Impure World Reincarnation gives Madara a self-repairing body and effectively limitless chakra, but initially leaves him without vitality or living sensations 73.
- Reassembles after physical destruction as long as his soul survives 75 76.
- Survives Tenchi Kaijin by expending soul power, returning with deep cracks and substantially reduced chakra 76.
- His perfected form restores bodily senses and allows his Rinnegan to heal earlier soul damage 111.
- Chiya’s later soul- and causality-burning flames exceed what his regeneration and Six Paths power can repair 118.
Six Paths Power and Truth-Seeking Orbs
After absorbing the Ten-Tails, Madara gains a Six Paths Cloak, Yin-Yang Release defenses, and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs 114.
- Sage Art: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch: Releases black lightning powerful enough to split space; Chiya blocks it with golden flames 114.
- Shapes the orbs into shields, blades, an axe, and a Six Paths Staff 114 117 118 119.
- Uses Six Paths power to restore physical injuries and support flight 114 116.
- Chiya scatters or vaporizes the orbs and tears through the cloak’s defenses 114 117.
Taijutsu and Eight Gates
Madara exchanges hundreds of aerial blows with Chiya before escalating to the Eight Gates 73 115.
- Opens all eight gates and combines their power with Six Paths chakra 115.
- Negates the Gate of Death’s fatal effects, though his sustained assault still drains stamina 115.
- Chiya catches his full-powered punch, crushes the bones in his arm, and intercepts his subsequent attacks without moving his feet 115.
- Hakuda: Sōkotsu sends him crashing into a mountain range 115.
Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara projects his nine-tomoe Rinne Sharingan onto the moon to spread Infinite Tsukuyomi’s light across Earth 116.
- Intended as the culmination of the Eye of the Moon Plan 105 117.
- Chiya’s planet-enclosing reiatsu barrier prevents its light from reaching the world below 117.
Izanagi
Madara repeatedly uses Izanagi to rewrite unfavorable outcomes and restore his physical condition 117.
- Removes injuries, cloak damage, and the physical strain of the Gate of Death 117.
- Each activation permanently blinds a Sharingan, limiting its use to the eyes available to him 117.
- Cannot erase Chiya’s sustained damage to his soul or causality; his final attempts leave him blind without stopping the burning 117 118.
Cursed-Seal Contingency
Madara’s seal inside Obito links their souls and preserves a means of forcing his resurrection 105 106.
- Allows him to hear Obito’s confession about Black Zetsu 105.
- Forces Obito to perform Rinne Rebirth and transfers his life force to Madara 106 107.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — Formerly Madara’s weapon; capable of reflecting ninjutsu. Chiya possesses it in the supplied passage 24.
- Red layered armor — Worn after reanimation and torn off during his escalating duel with Chiya 65 73.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — His original asset and the Ten-Tails’ husk. Its response to his presence weakens Chiya’s control; Madara uses it beneath Majestic Attire: Susanoo and extracts its life force for chakra 73 75.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival and standard for worthy opposition; his cells also support Madara’s regeneration and Wood Release 70 73 76 111.
- Chiya Uchiha — Principal battlefield opponent. Madara’s interest develops into admiration, then desperate hatred as Chiya defeats each of his major techniques 65 76 113 118.
- Obito Uchiha — Successor, impersonator, and expendable pawn. Madara’s cursed seal ultimately forces him to sacrifice his life force for Rinne Rebirth 17 105 106.
- Nagato — Recipient and caretaker of Madara’s Rinnegan, intended to resurrect him. Chiya kills Nagato and takes the eyes before that plan can succeed 45 65 67 73.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Reanimates Madara and supplies an undead army. Madara rejects his authority and eventually escapes his control 65 68 90.
- Black Zetsu — Believed to be Madara’s own will and most loyal subordinate; actually Kaguya’s agent. Manipulates his peace plan, then pierces his heart and drains his Six Paths power 105 108 119 120.
- Orochimaru — Kabuto’s master and a competing claimant to Chiya’s body. Madara dismisses his spiritual takeover attempt as suicidal 81.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return and War Against Chiya
- Kabuto reanimates Madara after Obito reports that Chiya has killed Nagato, seized the Rinnegan, and disrupted their tailed-beast plans. Madara orders preparations for war 65.
- His opening clashes escalate through Susanoo, meteor attacks, Fire Release, Wood Release, and Limbo 67 68 70 73.
- Chiya destroys his Majestic Attire form with Tenchi Kaijin. Madara survives at severe cost, praises Chiya, and temporarily withdraws from direct combat 75 76.
- During Orochimaru’s possession attempt, Madara prevents the Allied Forces from interfering and correctly predicts Orochimaru’s failure 81.
- He resumes attacking, loses more chakra to Chiya’s summoned skeletons, and escapes Kabuto’s control as Obito becomes the Ten-Tails jinchūriki 89 90.
Resurrection and Six Paths Escalation
- Through his seal in Obito, Madara hears the account of Black Zetsu’s manipulation and activates his resurrection contingency 105 106.
- Chiya publicly exposes the deception. Madara reacts with shock and anger before completing his transformation into a perfected body 108 109 111.
- After Chiya counters his Perfect Susanoo, meteors, and Limbo, Madara absorbs the Ten-Tails and then opens the Gate of Death 111 112 113 114 115.
- Infinite Tsukuyomi and repeated Izanagi attempts also fail to overcome Chiya. Soul-burning flames leave Madara blind and unable to reverse his defeat 116 117 118.
Black Zetsu’s Betrayal
- Madara stages apparently suicidal attacks to distract Chiya while signaling Black Zetsu to escape confinement 119.
- Instead of helping, Black Zetsu strikes through his back and heart, immobilizes him, and drains his Six Paths power 119 120.
- Black Zetsu confirms that Madara and Obito were tools for Kaguya’s resurrection. Madara’s resistance ends as his lifelong convictions collapse 120.
