Background / History
Tang Chen once led the Clear Sky Sect at the height of its influence. He was slightly stronger than Qian Daoliu, with the sect's secret techniques—particularly Ring Detonation—giving him an advantage in their rivalry. He later disappeared while seeking a divine inheritance, a decision tied to fulfilling Bo Saixi's conditions and winning her heart 135 193 194 305.
During his disappearance, Tang Chen became the King of Slaughter and lost access to his former identity. Tang Hao recognized him in Slaughter City and repeatedly called his name, prompting a struggle between his memories and the King of Slaughter persona. Tang Chen regained control, removed his mask, and recognized his grandson, although the Nine-Headed Bat King remained within him afterward 183 193.
Appearance
- Clothing: Usually wears dark-red or blood-red clothing beneath a crimson cloak with a standing collar 261 303 313.
- Eyes: Blood-red; his hatred is especially apparent when challenging Qian Daoliu outside Spirit City 261.
- King of Slaughter mask: Removes it after recovering his identity and recognizing Tang Hao 183.
- Severe injuries: Temporarily loses his left arm, suffers deep chest wounds exposing bone, and has a leg broken by Tang Hao. His injuries also make him appear more than ten years older 343 352.
- Divine form: Gains an elaborate suit of blood-colored Asura God Armor after becoming a god 459.
Personality
Tang Chen is proud of his former supremacy and treats challenges to his authority as acts of disloyalty. He initially dismisses Qian Daoliu as a defeated opponent, belittles Sword Douluo, and assumes that fighters below level 99 cannot meaningfully resist him. When opponents exceed his expectations, he frequently downplays their improvements before changing tactics 183 194 336 337.
His pursuit of the Clear Sky Sect's resurgence becomes inseparable from favoritism and coercion. He considers Tang Hao more talented and decisive than Tang Xiao, endorses Ah Yin's sacrifice as an acceptable price for Tang San's godhood, and orders the Seventh Elder's death for opposing Tang Hao. He likewise attempts to force Ning Rongrong into a role intended to spare Tang Hao from sacrifice 305 308 313 333 337.
Despite declaring that Clear Sky Sect disciples must give everything in battle, Tang Chen retreats when defeat threatens his life or ambitions. He flees Qian Daoliu, later escapes Tang Hao, and allows Tang Xiao to rescue the sect's disciples rather than risk a mutually destructive fight 194 221 344 452.
He is persistent in adversity. Repeated disappointing jar rewards do not extinguish his hope of restoring his body. His apparent remorse toward Tang Xiao after Tang Hao's betrayal is short-lived: once his strength returns, he again demands submission and threatens to kill Tang Xiao 351 352 355 436 451.
Abilities & Skills
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang Chen's martial soul is an enormous hammer marked with blood-red patterns. Following his ascension, it becomes entirely blood-red and is no longer merely a martial soul, but a true artifact 192 262 459.
- Delivers powerful attacks even without activating a Soul Ring skill 193.
- Can be thrown and used for travel; Tang Chen escapes with Tang Hao aboard it 194.
- Absorbs the Blood River's divine power to complete its artifact transformation 459.
- After his ascension, its attacks overwhelm Tang Hao and generate a vortex spanning hundreds of miles of sky 461.
Clear Sky Sect Secret Arts
Tang Chen possesses extensive mastery of the Clear Sky Sect's hammer techniques. His demonstration against Xiong Jun helps Tang Hao resolve difficulties in his own practice 304.
- Clear Sky Nine Absolutes: Uses techniques including Break and Penetrate to crush defenses or concentrate an attack against them 344 451.
- Chaotic Cloak: Uses it among the sect's supreme arts during his battle with Xiong Jun 304.
- Limit: Tang Xiao's later mastery nearly equals his own, preventing Tang Chen from winning through technique alone 451.
Ring Detonation
Tang Chen uses the Clear Sky Sect's strongest secret art to convert his Soul Rings into a burst of combat power. It formerly gave him the advantage over Qian Daoliu 194.
- Older Soul Rings increase the power obtained through detonation, making ring enhancement especially valuable to him 353.
- His ninth ring remains temporarily unusable after the first renewed duel outside Spirit City 221.
- Qian Daoliu's competing technique restores a detonated ring in one day, a recovery speed that shocks Tang Chen 221.
- Tang Chen recognizes the danger of Tang Xiao detonating all nine rings and abandons their confrontation rather than risk death or severe injury 452.
Divine Slaughter's Domain
Tang Chen projects a blood-red domain through his Clear Sky Hammer. Its power exceeds the version associated with Tang Hao 451.
- Extends over a hundred meters around him during his duel with Tang Xiao 451.
- Provides a means of overwhelming an opponent when hammer technique alone proves insufficient 451.
- Is compressed and countered by Tang Xiao's evolved Clear Sky Domain 452.
Asura Divine Power
Before becoming a god, Tang Chen can already channel Asura divine power through the Asura God's sword. His ascension later multiplies his fighting strength beyond his previous level-99 capabilities 304 459 461.
- Inflicts a bone-deep chest wound on Xiong Jun with a divine sword strike, although Tang Chen is also struck down during the exchange 304.
- Receives inherited memories concerning the Divine Realm, the Asura God, and the Dragon God 459 463.
- Survives being driven into a spatial rift by Tang Hao and tears his way back out 462.
- Can conceal his god-level strength behind an aura roughly equivalent to level 98 or 99 to lure Tang Hao into battle 460.
Tracking and Communication
- Tracking mark: Leaves a mark on Tang Hao that allows him to locate his grandson anywhere on the Douluo Continent 303.
- Sound Transmission: Communicates privately with Tang Hao during battle 194.
- Sound isolation: Uses soul power to block outside sound while discussing his condition with Tang Xiao 351.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Asura Demon Sword / Asura God Sword: A divine artifact wielded alongside his hammer. Qian Daoliu eventually seizes it, leaving Tang Chen without its support during his confrontation with Tang Hao 262 304 338 344.
- Asura God Armor: Formed from his Soul Bones during ascension. Their evolution gives his Soul Skills an enormous boost, increasing them by at least fifty thousand years 459.
- Space Soul Tool: Stores his severed left arm, which he unsuccessfully attempts to reattach with a healing fruit 355.
- Drifting jar: Enables communication and transactions with an unknown being. Each purchasable jar costs one hundred thousand Gold Soul Coins 345.
- Lucky Magic Hammer: Used to open purchased jars after discovering that his Clear Sky Hammer cannot break them 353 359.
- Enhancer: A rare, untradeable item that increases a Soul Ring's age through successful enhancement. Tang Chen uses one on his ninth ring 353 355.
- Super Armor Potion: Grants immunity to control effects for ten seconds. Tang Chen considers it less useful than items that could restore his strength 355.
- Magic Juice: Replenishes soul power, but initially disappoints him because additional Soul Skills would not overcome stronger enemies 355 359.
- Mutated Strawberry: Heals his wounds and clears away lingering sword energy and angel divine power, but cannot reattach his severed arm. He later uses another after escaping a spatial rift 355 462.
- Heaven's Recovery Potion: An artifact-grade, untradeable potion that heals all injuries and restores all soul power. It successfully regenerates his missing arm 436.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Grandson and former favorite. Restores Tang Chen's identity and receives his backing as sect master, but later refuses to repair his divine body and seeks the Asura position himself. Their relationship becomes a blood feud 183 305 308 344 459.
- Tang Xiao — Grandson and displaced sect master. Initially reveres Tang Chen as the sect's spiritual pillar; later opposes him to protect its surviving disciples 262 308 451 452.
