In Japan's Warring States period, five hundred years ago, Inuyasha was a half-demon born to the great demon Dog General and the human princess Izayoi. Accepted by neither humans nor demons, he heard that the Shikon Jewel's immense power could turn him into a full demon. He therefore went to Kaede's Village in Musashi Province, where Kikyo was born, to steal the jewel and become a full demon. However, Kikyo, the human priestess guarding it, possessed tremendous spiritual power and defeated him time and again. Inuyasha refused to give up and continued trying to steal the Shikon Jewel. Through their repeated battles, their shared loneliness gradually drew them to each other, and they agreed to use the jewel's power to turn Inuyasha into a full human.

But that was also where the tragedy began. Onigumo, a bandit who had long coveted Kikyo, sold his soul to demons and allowed them to devour him. After his death, he became the evil demon Naraku. Taking on each of their appearances in turn, Naraku wounded Kikyo, stole the Shikon Jewel, and attacked Inuyasha. Believing Kikyo had deceived him, Inuyasha attacked the village in a rage and seized the jewel. With the last of her strength, Kikyo fired a sealing arrow and pinned Inuyasha to the Sacred Tree. Filled with despair and resentment, Inuyasha fell into a fifty-year slumber, while Kikyo followed him into death, taking the jewel with her. Fifty years later, Kagome appeared and the Shikon Jewel shattered. Thus began Inuyasha's long journey to find and gather its fragments.

Fifty years after Inuyasha was sealed, Kikyo's reincarnation five hundred years later-Kagome Higurashi, an ordinary shrine girl-traveled through time, broke his seal, and brought the Shikon Jewel back to the Warring States period. One night, Sesshomaru and his servant Jaken searched for his father's grave to obtain his father's heirloom, Tessaiga. After finding Inuyasha, Sesshomaru used the demon Mukotsu to impersonate Inuyasha's deceased mother, Izayoi, and approach him. Once he learned the grave's location, Sesshomaru intended to kill Inuyasha, but Mukotsu, moved by maternal love, died protecting him. To prevent Sesshomaru from obtaining Tessaiga, Inuyasha and Kagome went to his father's grave and fought Sesshomaru. As a half-demon, Inuyasha was no match for the full-demon Sesshomaru and remained at a disadvantage. Later, through an accident involving Kagome, Inuyasha obtained Tessaiga. Sesshomaru then transformed into his dog form and fought fiercely against him. However, he could not defeat Inuyasha with Tessaiga in his hands, and Inuyasha severed his arm with the sword. Gravely wounded, Sesshomaru fled. Even after defeating Sesshomaru, Inuyasha still coveted the Shikon Jewel, but Kagome accidentally shattered it with an arrow during battle, leaving the two no choice but to set out together to gather its fragments.

On their journey, they met Shippo, a young fox demon who had lost his father. Seeking revenge against the Thunder Beast brothers Hiten and Manten for killing his father, Shippo tried to steal Kagome's Four Souls shards. Kagome attempted to save him, only to be captured by Manten. Inuyasha and Shippo found the brothers, and after a difficult battle, Inuyasha finally defeated them and rescued Kagome. Shippo joined Kagome and Inuyasha, setting out with them in search of the jewel.

Later, the demoness Urasue stole Kikyo's ashes, intending to revive her with clay and make her obey her commands and help find the Shikon Jewel. As Kaede, Kagome, and the others prepared to retrieve Kikyo's ashes, Urasue abducted Kagome. She extracted Kagome's soul and revived Kikyo, but unexpectedly, Kikyo refused to obey her and killed her instead. When Kikyo and Inuyasha met, their old misunderstanding led them to fight. While Kikyo was attacking Inuyasha, Kagome reclaimed her soul, causing Kikyo to lose her strength instantly and fall off a cliff. Inuyasha was deeply hurt that Kikyo had attacked him after her revival, and only recovered his spirits after Kagome comforted him.

After Kikyo's revival, Inuyasha, Kagome, and Shippo continued their journey to collect the shards. In a village, they met the monk Miroku, who told the group about his family's history. His grandfather had been cursed by the demon Naraku, leaving a Wind Tunnel in his right hand. As the Wind Tunnel grew, it would eventually swallow its bearer as well. This curse would pass down through the generations unless Naraku died. Miroku hoped to find and kill Naraku by gathering the Shikon Jewel. Inuyasha also learned from him that Naraku was responsible for the misunderstanding between him and Kikyo fifty years earlier. With Miroku now among their companions, Kagome's group began searching for both the jewel shards and Naraku.

Later, Naraku devised a scheme to take control of Sango's younger brother Kohaku and make him shoot his father and older sister dead. He also tricked Sango into hearing that Inuyasha had killed everyone in her village. Believing it, Sango resolved to take revenge. She found Inuyasha and fought him, but during their battle, Kagome exposed Naraku's plot and revealed the truth to her. Once Sango learned what had happened, she accepted the group's invitation to join their journey to find the Shikon Jewel and destroy Naraku. She brought them to the Limestone Cave, where she explained the jewel's origins and told them the story of Midoriko, the priestess who had bravely fought the demons long ago. But Naraku used a Four Souls shard to sustain Kohaku's life and lure Sango to him. Threatening her brother's life, he demanded that she steal Inuyasha's Tessaiga. Desperate to protect Kohaku, Sango had no choice but to return to Inuyasha, secretly take the sword, and bring it to Naraku. She intended to kill Naraku, but Kohaku wounded her. Inuyasha arrived just in time, and Kagome shot an arrow through Naraku's body. Naraku fled with Kohaku.

Through a series of battles during their journey, Inuyasha learned many of Tetsusaiga's secret techniques and fought Naraku repeatedly, but the cunning Naraku escaped time and again through trickery. Later, Inuyasha's group arrived at Mount Hakurei and battled the Band of Seven. After they defeated its leader, Bankotsu, the ground suddenly collapsed, sucking Inuyasha and the others underground separately. When Naraku appeared, Inuyasha unleashed the Wind Scar, but Naraku's demonic energy took control of it and sent it repeatedly against the group. Kagome stopped the Wind Scar with a Purifying Arrow and saved Koga. Naraku then headed toward Kikyo. To prove that he had completely discarded Onigumo's heart, he wounded her and pushed her into an abyss of miasma. Sesshomaru arrived and cut Naraku into pieces, but Naraku regenerated. When Inuyasha arrived, Sesshomaru told him that Naraku had killed Kikyo. Unable to accept her death, Inuyasha was devastated, but he continued the journey with Kagome and the others to avenge Kikyo and gather the entire Shikon Jewel.

In the final arc, Kikyo had not died after Naraku knocked her into the river of miasma, but she was gravely injured. Despite wounds too severe for her to heal herself, she continued fighting with her soul and created shikigami to raise a protective barrier around the terrified villagers. Before her soul faded, her shikigami guided Kagome to heal her. Later, with her injuries still unhealed, Kikyo wanted to enter a trap in Kagome's place, but Inuyasha dissuaded her. In the end, she helped Kagome at a critical moment with an arrow imbued with powerful spiritual intent. Even as her wounds worsened and miasma severely corroded her body, Kikyo willingly absorbed a large amount of miasma from Miroku to save him, then quietly departed. Afterward, to save an innocent villager's life, she unhesitatingly stepped into Naraku's trap. His malicious spider threads contaminated her and caused her wounds to spread further. Knowing that her clay body could not endure much longer, Kikyo guided Kagome to inherit the Azusa Mountain Bow under the pretext of saving her. In the final battle, she left the light that would destroy Naraku within the nearly complete Shikon Jewel in his possession. Beneath the shining stars, as Inuyasha kissed her deeply through his tears, Kikyo finally became the ordinary woman she had always wanted to be, smiling as she dissolved into light.

Constant battles and emotional experiences tempered Inuyasha's body and spirit. In the final battle, he and his companions fought inside Naraku's enormous transformed body, ultimately destroying him through their combined efforts. After defeating Naraku, Kagome shot the Shikon Jewel with an arrow and overcame the darkness with her courage and pure heart. Together with Inuyasha, she made the one correct wish, purifying the jewel so that it would cease its cycle of reincarnation and disappear forever. The power released by its disappearance sent Kagome back to the modern world, and she could no longer return to the Warring States period through the old well. Without Kagome, Inuyasha lived in Kikyo's hometown, easing his loneliness by destroying evil demons. Three years later, however, the old well suddenly reconnected to the Warring States period one day. With her family's support, Kagome chose to return and live happily with Inuyasha.

In addition, Inuyasha had an older half-brother, Sesshomaru, who shared his father and was the protagonist of this story. Sesshomaru was Toga's son, immensely powerful and therefore extremely proud. He despised the half-demon Inuyasha for his human blood and resented their father for leaving Tessaiga to Inuyasha and Tenseiga to him. To obtain his father's heirloom Tessaiga, Sesshomaru searched for his father's grave with his servant Jaken. After finding Inuyasha, he used the demon Mukotsu to impersonate Inuyasha's deceased mother, Izayoi, and approach him. Once he extracted the grave's location, Sesshomaru intended to kill Inuyasha, but Mukotsu, moved by maternal love, died protecting him. After Inuyasha obtained Tessaiga, Sesshomaru transformed into his dog form. However, sensing Inuyasha's determination to protect humans, Tessaiga transformed and severed Sesshomaru's left arm. Sesshomaru later made repeated attempts to seize the sword.

Sesshomaru possessed a keen sense of smell and extraordinary strength, often fighting with Poisonous Claws and his Light Whip. Since his sword Tenseiga could only save lives, not take them, he deliberately obtained the teeth of Goshinki, who had bitten through Tessaiga, and gave them to Kaijinbo to forge the Demonic Sword Tokijin. However, Tokijin broke during his battle with Moryomaru. Faced with Moryomaru's brazen insults toward Kagura, Sesshomaru felt anger on someone else's behalf for the first time. Tenseiga sensed all of this, and through Totosai's reforging, it became a weapon capable of attacking opponents with Meido Zangetsuha.

During his battle with Shinigami, Sesshomaru learned that Tenseiga was a part extracted from Tessaiga and was furious. Working in concert with Inuyasha's Tessaiga, Tenseiga's Meido Zangetsuha became a full moon. But this also revealed his father's intention: once Sesshomaru had perfected Meido Zangetsuha, he was to give it to Inuyasha through Tessaiga's ability to absorb powers. Later, he used a fragment of Kanna's mirror supplied by Naraku to fight Inuyasha, acknowledged him as the rightful heir, and gave him Meido Zangetsuha. Tenseiga returned to its original form as a healing sword.

During the battle with Magatsuhi, Sesshomaru was pierced through the body and surrounded by the body Magatsuhi had obtained from Naraku. Just as Jaken, Inuyasha, and the others were desperately worried for his safety, green light burst from the mass of flesh and blasted it apart. Sesshomaru saw Totosai in the sky and felt the change in his left arm, confirming his suspicions. He swung at Magatsuhi's scattered □□, and a streak of golden and pure green light appeared in the sky. Magatsuhi shattered instantly, and Sesshomaru's left arm regrew, its hand gripping the green-glowing Bakusaiga. Faced with another taunt from Magatsuhi, Sesshomaru swung his sword at him. The □□ cut by Bakusaiga could not regenerate, and the effect spread to any parts touching them, eating them away. Sesshomaru himself awakened the sword that had always been within him, gaining a new left arm along with Bakusaiga.
