Background / History
Kikyo grew up in the village she later protected. As a child, she witnessed a demon kill her father while they were searching for food in the mountains, then brought his body home for burial. Her mother subsequently weakened and died, leaving Kikyo responsible for her younger sister, Kaede. Protecting Kaede gave her the resolve to seek a teacher and become a priestess 32.
She studied under Zhiyá at Kiyomori Temple. When her home village's previous priestess died, Kikyo returned before completing everything her gifts might have allowed her to learn. Although she already possessed the skills required of an ordinary priestess—and potentially could have become a court priestess—she chose to defend her birthplace instead 3.
Appearance
- Build and features: Slender, with delicate brows and a pale face 3 32.
- Hair: Long hair with neatly trimmed bangs 32.
- Clothing: White robes and red hakama 3 34.
- Hands: Lightly callused palms, noted when she first takes Han's hand 3.
- Spiritual manifestation: Her purification arrows shine with brilliant violet light 3.
Personality
Kikyo treats protection as a responsibility she cannot abandon. She answers villagers' requests without refusing and describes fighting demons until death as a priestess's fate. This commitment can override concern for her own health: after nearly exhausting her spiritual power to save Han, she insists on returning home despite Zhiyá prescribing at least a month of rest 3 32.
Her compassion does not depend on whether someone is human. Unsure whether the lotus-born Han is a demon or a spirit, she nevertheless protects the child and seeks someone capable of raising her safely. Likewise, her calm, unprejudiced treatment of Inuyasha helps him lower his guard and draws him toward her 3 32.
Kaede's happiness is central to her choices. Kikyo wants her sister to have an ordinary, peaceful life rather than inherit a priestess's dangerous duties. She also longs for ordinary happiness herself, coming to regard Inuyasha as the future she might have as a woman rather than only as a village protector 7 34.
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual Power and the Four Souls
Kikyo possesses all Four Souls in their fullness: the wild, peaceful, fortunate, and wondrous souls. Zhiyá identifies her love and sincere desire to protect others as the source of her exceptional spiritual strength and purity 4.
- Her power surpasses that of ordinary priestesses in both strength and purity 4.
- Han experiences it as warm and calm, gentle like water but capable of piercing anything 34.
- She can perceive unusually concentrated spiritual energy and recognize its purity 3.
Purification Archery
Kikyo channels spiritual power through her bow and arrows to purify demons 3.
- At Sawada Castle, successive arrows clear a path through the attacking demons 3.
- Stronger demons can evade her shots; her arrows do not automatically overcome every opponent 3.
- Her supply of arrows is finite. She normally preserves the final arrow as a priestess's last safeguard, but breaks that rule to protect Han 3.
Shikigami
Kikyo uses a kite shikigami to carry herself and Han through the air 3.
- Its flight is sustained by her spiritual power 3.
- Carrying passengers consumes considerable energy, making it a technique she seldom uses 3.
- When her power is exhausted, the shikigami reverts to ordinary paper 3.
Spiritual Power Burst
Kikyo can release spiritual power directly and teaches Han a close-combat technique called Spiritual Power Burst 3 36.
- Han applies the taught technique by driving spiritual power from her palm into Hundredlegs' body 36.
- Kikyo's desperate large-scale release during Han's rescue reduces almost all the surrounding demons to ash 3.
- Such an extreme release can temporarily prevent a priestess from generating more power; severe cases can cause permanent loss. Kikyo escapes irreversible damage but suffers physical weakness and depleted power 3.
Healing and Herbal Medicine
Kikyo gathers and prepares medicinal herbs for villagers and teaches Kaede their properties 3.
- She can purify demonic poison in wounds by releasing spiritual power from her hands 3.
- This cannot save someone who has already lost too much blood, as shown by the samurai who brings news of Sawada Castle 3.
Purification and Instruction
Kikyo works to purify the Shikon Jewel and hopes to make it disappear entirely. Zhiyá recommends her for this duty when he cannot undertake it himself 23 32.
- Her cultivation and demon-slaying experience exceed those of the older priestesses at Kiyomori Temple 34.
- She has developed personal insights and unique applications of spiritual power 34.
- She teaches Han that true mastery requires personal understanding, not merely imitation 34.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bow and arrows — Her principal weapons against demons; she carries them when responding to requests for help 3 32.
- Kite shikigami — A paper construct used for aerial transport 3.
- Shikon Jewel — Entrusted to her for purification. Its attraction to demons leads her to live apart from the village with Kaede 23 24 32.
- Blessed prayer beads — Strung and blessed by Kikyo every evening during Han's month-long stay, then given to Han as protection for her journey 34.
Relationships
- Kaede — Younger sister and Kikyo's most important person. Kikyo protects her, hopes she can live peacefully, and considers her approval essential to her relationship with Inuyasha 7 32 34.
- Han — Rescued child and later pupil. Kikyo comes to see herself as a mother figure to Han and teaches her with increasing tenderness after their reunion 3 34.
- Inuyasha — Initially an adversary seeking the Shikon Jewel, later her companion and romantic partner. He gathers herbs, fights demons, and quietly protects her; she sees him as the possibility of an ordinary woman's future 32 34.
- Zhiyá — Teacher and trusted refuge. He treats her after Han's rescue, worries about her disregard for her health, and later recommends her as the Shikon Jewel's purifier 3 23.
- Kagome Higurashi — Kikyo's reincarnation in the original-series synopsis, which also recounts Kikyo guiding her to inherit the Azusa Mountain Bow 1.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rescuing Han
Answering a dying samurai's plea, Kikyo rides to the besieged Sawada Castle and traces the spiritual energy attracting demons to a valley behind it. There she finds a girl emerging from a lotus. Rather than expose the child's origin to the castle's inhabitants, she takes her directly toward Kiyomori Temple 3.
Pursuing demons demand the girl, but Kikyo refuses. Near the temple, she sends the child toward safety, fires her final arrow, and unleashes her power against the demons. Zhiyá catches her as she falls and treats her injuries. After a brief recovery, she returns home, promising the newly named Han that she will be waiting in Kaede's Village 3.
Guarding the Shikon Jewel
After Zhiyá directs the demon slayers to Kikyo, they leave Kiyomori Temple to deliver the jewel. By the following spring, Kikyo is guarding and purifying it from a home away from the settlement to reduce the danger to villagers 23 24 32.
Inuyasha's attempts to obtain the jewel gradually give way to affection. Their shared work and quiet companionship draw them together, while the villagers begin accepting him through their trust in Kikyo 32.
Reunion and Han's Training
Han fulfills her promise to visit. During a stay of slightly more than a month, Kikyo teaches her priestess skills and lets her observe exorcisms. Their exchange of spiritual power deepens their bond, and Kikyo gives Han blessed prayer beads before she resumes her travels 34.
The Dragon Jewel Quest
Han later seeks a treasure that could give Kikyo an ageless life, hoping she and Inuyasha can remain together. She intends to leave the decision to Kikyo rather than impose longevity on her 43.
At Dragon Palace City, Han asks for a Dragon Pearl, and Sesshomaru agrees to recover the stolen Dragon Bones in exchange. Han does not know that Kikyo instead wants to use the Shikon Jewel to make Inuyasha human. The provided chapters do not establish that Kikyo receives the pearl 48 49.
Original-Series Synopsis
Chapter 1 separately summarizes Kikyo's original-series fate: Naraku impersonates her and Inuyasha to turn them against each other, leading Kikyo to seal Inuyasha before dying with the Shikon Jewel. Urasue later revives her using clay and Kagome's soul 1.
The synopsis also recounts her continued efforts to protect others despite fatal injuries and miasma contamination. She guides Kagome toward the Azusa Mountain Bow, leaves purifying light within the jewel, and finally dissolves into light while Inuyasha holds her. These events are not presented as completed events in the supplied main-story chapters 1.
