Background / History
Jaken once ruled the wilderness of Musashi Province with numerous servants. During a losing battle against Bikuni, the century-old great monster of Western Mountain, he was captured and nearly eaten. Sesshomaru happened to pass through and killed Bikuni with his Light Whip because she was blocking his path. Awed by this display, Jaken abandoned his followers and pursued Sesshomaru, asking to become his servant 40.
Sesshomaru initially ignored him, but Jaken continued following without discouragement. Later, Sesshomaru retrieved a two-headed staff from a waterfall and offered it to him, saying he could keep it if he could use it. Jaken then learned his new master’s name. This encounter occurred during Sesshomaru and Han’s temporary separation; afterward, Jaken accompanied Sesshomaru to a temple and saw Han emerge at sunrise 40.
During a later separation lasting nearly fifty years, Jaken lived with Yunai among the Wolf Demon Tribe and waited for Sesshomaru’s return. His attachment developed beyond admiration for strength into trust in his master. On their reunion, Sesshomaru acknowledged his long wait with an unusually gentle response, and Jaken supplied an account of events throughout the intervening years 75 76.
Appearance
Jaken is a small, green-skinned demon whose surviving crow tengu traits are most visible in his stature and beaklike mouth 76.
- Eyes: Large, round, yellow eyes, described as bulb-sized or bell-like 54 109.
- Mouth: A pointed, crowlike beak 76.
- Build: Short stature with two spindly legs 44 76.
- Clothing: Wears a robe that Yunai sometimes grabs or uses to wipe away tears 99.
- Wings: None; he lacks the wings associated with crow tengu 76.
Personality
Jaken reveres strength and takes great pride in serving Sesshomaru, repeatedly introducing himself as his lord’s “most valued” or “most trusted” retainer. His devotion is not merely self-proclaimed: Sesshomaru values his loyalty and his willingness to report the truth even when the news will provoke anger 76 132 174.
He is easily frightened by heights, powerful enemies, and Sesshomaru’s displeasure, yet fear does not reliably make him retreat. After waiting fifty years for his master, he insists on accompanying him up the Crane Immortal’s dangerous stairway even when warned that he might die 44 120.
His outward deference often conceals sarcastic complaints. He privately criticizes Sesshomaru’s stubbornness and unequal treatment of his companions, but quickly kneels, apologizes, or covers his head when confronted. When protected by Sesshomaru’s authority, he becomes boastful and domineering 52 119 131 174.
Jaken commonly disparages humans and half-demons, but his attachments complicate that prejudice. He worries sincerely about Han, tries to protect her, and treasures memories of Rin in the life recalled through Han’s visions. He also notices Sesshomaru’s affection for others, although he sometimes misunderstands its motives 54 59 94 131 134.
Abilities & Skills
Intelligence Gathering
Jaken’s crow tengu ancestry gives him access to a widespread kinship network whose members exchange information across scattered communities 76.
- Reports political developments, enemy preparations, and events involving Inuyasha 51 76.
- Considers seeking northern clansmen to keep Sesshomaru informed during their travels 64.
- Uses demons under his authority near Musashi to investigate secret human troop movements; later reports the likely location of Kagome, Miroku, and Sango 167 171.
- Gives honest reports despite fearing Sesshomaru’s reaction, making him more dependable than informants who conceal inconvenient facts 76.
Human-Head Staff Combat
Jaken uses the Human-Head Staff to project powerful flames and strike opponents directly 54 78 109.
- Slows Qiuran’s attack while defending Han, though the cat demon’s thick skin blocks the flames 54.
- Burns away an enormous swarm of demonic moths within a few breaths 109.
- Drives monsters away from the wounded Lotus 131.
- Uses the weapon to intimidate human soldiers and prevent them from interrupting Sesshomaru and Han 99.
- Can be caught off guard despite a successful attack: one surviving moth covers his eyes and leaves him panicking until Yunai removes it 109.
Planning and Command
Jaken devises schemes and directs lesser beings in support of Sesshomaru’s objectives 76 78 88.
- Proposes using Inuyasha to locate the Dog General’s grave, concealing the details from Han because he expects her disapproval 76 77.
- Commands Mukotsu to probe Inuyasha’s memories and prevents her from killing him before obtaining the information 78.
- Directs an enormous Evil Spirit to strike a mountain and flush out its monsters for Sesshomaru 88.
Basic Wound Treatment
At Sesshomaru’s instruction, Jaken provides practical first aid to the unconscious Lotus 131.
- Cleans her wounds and applies crushed herbs that stop bleeding and promote healing.
- Relies on herbs supplied by Sesshomaru rather than a demonstrated healing power.
Bloodline Limitations
Most of the power associated with Jaken’s crow tengu ancestry has disappeared 76.
- Knows no swordsmanship.
- Cannot travel through time and space.
- Cannot fly and has no wings.
- Retains an instinctive longing for the sky, contributing to his admiration for Sesshomaru’s aerial abilities.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Human-Head Staff — A staff bearing two human heads, retrieved from a waterfall and given to Jaken by Sesshomaru. Its old-man head releases searing flames. Sesshomaru also uses it to open the entrance to the Dog General’s grave 40 78 109.
Relationships
- Sesshomaru — Master and the central object of Jaken’s loyalty. Sesshomaru tolerates his occasional insolence because he is faithful and useful, revives him after Kaijinbo kills him, and protects him during the collapse of the Crane Immortal’s steps 76 117 120.
- Han / Lotus — Respects her both as Sesshomaru’s beloved and as a powerful being. He defends Han against Qiuran and worries during her prolonged unconsciousness, but refuses to accept her interference in the scheme against Inuyasha. In her recalled life as Lotus, he treats her wounds 54 78 94 131.
- Yunai — Frequent companion and sparring partner. They spend fifty years together among the Wolf Demon Tribe, quarrel over etiquette and Sesshomaru’s behavior, and nevertheless comfort or help one another. Yunai mourns Jaken’s death and enthusiastically greets his revival 76 94 109 117.
- Inuyasha — Regards him disdainfully as a half-demon, yet seeks his help against the Leopard Cat Tribe because he is Sesshomaru’s brother. Later helps target him in the search for Tessaiga and reluctantly assists efforts to rescue his companions 51 76 78 167.
- Mukotsu — Subordinate in the grave-search scheme. She obeys Jaken’s instructions to question Inuyasha and refuses Han’s order to release him 78.
- Rin — In Han’s recalled life, Jaken witnesses Rin grow from childhood to old age. He remembers her earliest, gap-toothed smile and her willingness to share food with him; their travels after Naraku remain among his most treasured memories 131.

Han’s Recalled Life
The “first playthrough” memories show Jaken serving a Sesshomaru who has already lived through Rin’s lifetime and become colder after her death. Hoping to preserve a rare return of his master’s gentleness, Jaken questions whether they should abandon the wounded Lotus. He then drives away nearby monsters and treats her injuries on Sesshomaru’s orders 131 132.
When Sesshomaru decides to enter Hell to find Lotus, Jaken warns that the journey is unbearably dangerous and argues that she must already be dead. After learning of the Human-Faced Spider’s connection to Naraku, he interprets the expedition as retaliation against an enemy, with Lotus’s rescue merely incidental 134.
