After Kikyo's resurrection, Inuyasha and Kagome had parted and reunited, encountering countless monsters along the way.

Miroku was another companion Inuyasha and Kagome had met on their journey. According to him, the Wind Tunnel in his palm was a hereditary curse placed on his family by a monster named Naraku. Fifty years ago, that devious, cunning monster had even killed the miko who guarded the Shikon Jewel, leaving her to die in agony and hatred. From Miroku's account, Inuyasha and Kagome began to glimpse the truth hidden behind those events. To find their common enemy, Inuyasha, Kagome, and Miroku finally set out together on the long road in search of Naraku.

While they were gathering Four Souls Shards, Naraku finally appeared before the three of them. Cloaked in a white baboon pelt, the monster revealed his plot from all those years ago and admitted what he had done to Inuyasha and Kikyo. At last, the truth lay before them: the tragedy that had turned the half-demon and the miko against each other had been orchestrated entirely by the monster named Naraku. Furious, Inuyasha tried to kill him for revenge, but Naraku calmly escaped under cover of miasma. The last image he left Inuyasha was of a man's back bearing a spider-shaped scar, and a pair of blood-red eyes.

Inuyasha and Kagome continued their journey. When they heard rumors of a monster collecting the souls of dead girls, Kagome and Miroku thought they should help, but Inuyasha refused to waste time on anything unrelated to the Four Souls Shards. Until...

Two traveling monks approached slowly from the distance, supporting each other. The older monk appeared gravely wounded. His injuries were the backlash left when Kikyo had turned his attack back on him. Inuyasha's group watched the two monks draw closer.
