Background / History

Birth and life at Kiyomori Temple

Kikyo discovered Han emerging from a lotus in the valley behind Sawada Castle. She carried the girl away from pursuing demons, spending her last arrow and unleashing her spiritual power to protect her. Zhiyá brought both of them to Kiyomori Temple, named Han, and encouraged her to become a priestess capable of standing beside Kikyo 3.

After Kikyo departed for Kaede’s Village, Han remained with the temple’s priestesses. Zhiyá taught her to read and supplied a talisman that concealed her nonhuman appearance. Her exceptional intelligence and memory allowed her to study advanced books quickly, while Gardenia helped her settle into daily life 4.

Listening to Daisy’s account of losing her parents and brother introduced Han to grief beyond her own distress at parting from Kikyo. She began questioning whether war or human desire lay behind the suffering of the people around her 6.

First journey with Sesshomaru

During a festival outing, Han stayed behind to shield the unarmed priestesses from a Bear Demon. Her barriers bought them time to escape, but she was overwhelmed and rescued by Sesshomaru. Recognizing the unusual power within his sword, Tenseiga, strengthened her wish for a suitable weapon of her own 8.

With Zhiyá’s permission, she left the temple to seek Totosai with Sesshomaru. Their journey included a battle against the Black Python and the discovery of Yunai, a White Hare of Inaba displaced across both time and space. Han invited the rabbit to travel with them until it could return home 9 10 11 14.

Totosai forged a protective sword from Sesshomaru’s tooth, using a branch of Hakuōju for its scabbard. After a stay with the Wolf Demon Tribe, Han collected the blade and accepted Sesshomaru’s name for it: Clear Torrent. Although she had originally wanted a Spirit Bow, she formed an immediate bond with the sword 15 17 18 19 20.

Pilgrimage and Aoki Shrine

Han returned to Kiyomori Temple after Sesshomaru promised to visit again. She subsequently fought alongside Yuika to protect demon slayers from a monster horde. When Zhiyá authorized pilgrimages, she chose to travel with Yunai alone, planning to visit Musashi before heading west 21 22 24.

At Aoki Shrine, Han uncovered a boar monster’s control over the shrine maidens and its exploitation of them through visiting nobles. She allied with the spellcaster Miya and persuaded Chacha to reveal what had happened, promising that the shrine maidens could still be purified 26 27.

The battle destroyed Han’s bow and forced her to draw Clear Torrent. She then confronted the corrupted shrine maiden Ryoko, whose memories revealed assault, revenge, sealing, and remorse. A dove messenger restored Han’s depleted spiritual power, allowing her to purify Ryoko 29.

Kikyo’s instruction and the road west

Han fulfilled her promise to visit Kikyo, meeting Kaede and Inuyasha in the village. She stayed for a little over a month, observing exorcisms and learning Kikyo’s techniques. Kikyo emphasized that mastering her own power required personal insight, not merely imitation, and gave her blessed prayer beads before she departed with Miya 34.

On the road west, Han and Miya sheltered the deer demon Lan and her daughter Yuno. Han killed the centipede monster Hundredlegs to save Yuno, then confronted monks who continued attacking the mother and child. Protecting them from indiscriminate hostility sharpened her awareness that she was not human 35 36 37.

She later saved Tomoko and her companions from demons released through a tainted magatama. Purifying the jewel replenished Han’s spiritual power, and Tomoko entrusted it to her before departing to pursue her ambition of becoming Crown Princess 38.

Spirit Clan heritage

After rejoining Sesshomaru, Han helped bring Lan and Yuno to Yokyu Castle and bathed in a Spirit Spring preserved by Yubaba and her sister. Sesshomaru then took her to Granny Medicine for a month of instruction 39 41.

Granny Medicine identified Han as a member of the Spirit Clan, whose people were born to avert world-destroying calamities, often at the cost of their lives. Human legends had distorted their role into that of disaster-bringers. Learning that Spirit Clan lives were seldom long left Han troubled by the possibility of future loss 41.

The Dragon Jewel quest

Han sought a Dragon Jewel so that Kikyo could choose an ageless life. Granny Medicine warned that its power was uncertain and that mermaid flesh offered cursed immortality instead. Han rejected the Shikon Jewel as a source of happiness, regarding it as a treasure surrounded by tragedy 43.

Sesshomaru accompanied her into the Dragon-Sleeping Sea. At Dragon Palace City, Asumi offered a Dragon Pearl in exchange for recovering Dragon Bones stolen roughly 150 years earlier. Before their departure, she helped Han improve her water control and gave her the Water Whistle 44 48.

Han followed Sesshomaru to Ryūkotsusei’s valley despite his warning, asking Yunai to seek Kikyo’s protection if anything happened to her. During the ensuing battle, her hiding place was buried beneath rubble. Sesshomaru detected her blood after Ryūkotsusei claimed she had been buried alive 49.

Appearance

  • Undisguised features: Long silver hair and emerald eyes 3 41.
  • Talisman disguise: Appears as a little human girl with jet-black hair, dark eyes, and fair skin 4.
  • Priestess clothing: Wears a white robe and red hakama; her early robes originally belonged to Gardenia 7 10.
  • Travel clothing: Uses a bamboo hat and straw rain cape when setting out on pilgrimage 24.

Personality

Han is affectionate and deeply attached to those who care for her. Kikyo becomes her closest family after rescuing her, while the priestesses of Kiyomori Temple provide another cherished home. Partings distress her intensely, but she tries not to burden others with demands that would interfere with their responsibilities 3 6 10.

Her compassion extends to humans and demons alike. She comforts Daisy, offers Yunai shelter, and protects Lan and Yuno despite human opposition. She becomes openly furious when monks condemn harmless demons solely because of their race, yet recognizes when Miya’s experience makes him better suited to negotiation 6 14 35 36.

Although initially unfamiliar with the world, Han develops composure through travel and combat. She chooses a dangerous pilgrimage without bringing the other priestesses because she does not want loved ones to share risks she has chosen herself. Her sense of a miko’s duty centers on helping ordinary people rather than serving the gods while ignoring human suffering 22 24.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Archery

Han combines unusually accurate aim with purification and specialized arrow techniques 5 11 28.

  • Purification Arrows: Purify demons; against other targets, they cause injury rather than purification 11.
  • Evil-Banishing: Reconstructs arrows with spiritual power rather than merely coating their surfaces. Her initial version is incomplete, but retains power within a target and continues purifying it 28 29.
  • Blood empowerment: Her blood activates an Evil-Banishing Arrow’s intense blue-green radiance against corrupted energy 29.
  • Pure spiritual arrow: Can manifest an arrow entirely from spiritual power under extreme urgency; its first use exhausts her completely 36.
  • Practical limitations: She crafts replacement arrows and retrieves them when possible, but demon-blood contamination can render wooden arrows unusable 20.

Barriers and Direct Spiritual Attacks

Han can release spiritual power without the weapons or ritual media normally required by priestesses 8.

  • Barehanded barriers: Shields companions from physical and demonic attacks without an incantation or medium 8.
  • Spiritual Power Barrier: Establishes a purifying space around her, destroying demons and ghosts within its radius 37 38.
  • Spiritual Power Burst: A close-range technique taught by Kikyo that releases power directly inside an enemy’s body 36.
  • Limits: Strong impacts can cause backlash; wide-area purification consumes substantial energy. Despite her unusual feats, Han describes herself as not very good with barriers 8 21 38.

Water Spirit Powers

Han possesses innate water-control abilities, but disordered inherited memories leave her to discover their uses gradually 46.

  • Gathers surrounding water to cushion incoming force 48.
  • Disperses the water power within an object to make it easier to handle 48.
  • Guides currents and moves a water ball with one hand after Asumi’s training 48.
  • Recognizes that separating air from water could allow underwater breathing; she also shares breath with Sesshomaru during their descent 44 46.

Spiritual Perception and Plant Awareness

Han is naturally sensitive to spiritual and demonic power 41.

  • Detects approaching monsters and recognizes missing spiritual barriers at Aoki Shrine 22 26.
  • Senses life and otherworldly power within Tenseiga 8.
  • Hears an iris’s story and recognizes its connection to Ayame 18.
  • Learns to recognize the whispering of flowers, grasses, and medicinal trees under Granny Medicine 41.

Healing and Medicine

Han’s unusual constitution allows her to recover much faster than an ordinary person, with almost no lingering effects from the Bear Demon attack 9.

  • Prepares medicine and delivers it to patients 9.
  • Treats Sesshomaru’s poisoned wounds with herbs that rapidly neutralize the poison; the result prompts him to question her healing ability 11.
  • Shows aptitude for plants and medicine alongside scholarship, archery, and talismans 7.

Learning and Scholarship

Han has exceptional intelligence and memory, quickly progressing from basic literacy to advanced books. Kikyo is likewise astonished by her aptitude, while cautioning that true mastery requires original understanding 4 34.
