Background / History

Lingyue comes from a different cultivation continent, where medicinal pills can enable people with mortal bones to cultivate. She attributes their exclusion from cultivation on Xu Taiping’s continent to severed cultivation legacies, though she later recognizes that its scarce spiritual energy and stronger laws of Heaven present additional obstacles 10 36.

Alchemy was her greatest specialty. She belonged to an unnamed sect and once witnessed her master slay a dragon single-handedly. She avoids teaching Xu Taiping her sect’s secret arts because recognition of their lineage could expose his connection to her and bring deadly calamities upon him 34 35 47.

By the time Xu Taiping plants his grandfather’s soybean seed, Lingyue has survived inside it as a remnant soul for six hundred years. She reveals that it is the Earth Treasury Fruit and exchanges its secrets and a cultivation-enabling prescription for the contents of two of its three pods. Restoring her true body depends on the fruit’s continued development 9 11.

Her affection for Xu Taiping grows beyond their original transaction. She worries about the suffering caused by her prescription, feels tenderness when he shows ordinary childish excitement, and is moved by the wounds he receives fighting the Tiger Demon.
