Background / History

Origins and the Heavenly Court

Blade Ghost began cultivation as a lowly sect menial. Fairy Lingyue was already renowned as the Undying Night Soul at that time; she vanished before he became famous himself, explaining why he knew her reputation while she did not recognize him 3271 3272.

His recovered memories include a Shangqing Realm that had not yet been divided into Upper and Lower Realms, with territory far exceeding the present Five Heavens. He remembers a palace as vast as a heaven, patrolled by heavenly soldiers and guarded by four Heavenly Gates—features he associates with the Ancient Heavenly Court 2242.

He later reveals that the Heavenly Court used him as a sacrificial pawn before the Great Void Calamity became dormant. Despite this, he remains among those secretly resisting the calamity 3332.

The Red-Haired Blade Ghost Legend

The local legend describes an Azure Profound Sect saber cultivator who defeated countless opponents, lost to a visiting young man at the height of his fame, and fed his body to his saber out of obsession. According to the tale, the resulting ghost initially killed indiscriminately before targeting only saber users 177.

This account is presented as folklore rather than a complete explanation of his identity. Fairy Lingyue determines that he originated from a cultivator beyond the Transformation Realm, while his later memories establish a much older connection to the Heavenly Court. His original body also survives separately, enshrined by beings who use it as a weapon 204 3260 3332.

Lost Memories and Obsession

During his early encounters with Xu Taiping, Blade Ghost appears lucid but remains mentally confused, requiring outside stimulation to recall things. His clearest surviving obsession is finding an unidentified blade technique that he believes will free him 265 271.

He considers Duan Tianya’s inherited techniques the pinnacle of mortal-realm blade arts. Testing them against Xu Taiping becomes both a route toward that elusive technique and a means of restoring his memories 271 766.

Appearance

  • Puppet guise: Initially has black hair and carries a long saber at his waist 201 202.
  • Revealed ghost form: His hair turns fiery red and his eyes emerald green when Xu Taiping strikes the back of his neck 202.
  • Aged features: Described with an aged face; later strokes his beard while discussing his restored domain 271 1975.
  • Enlarged manifestations: Can grow to a hundred zhang tall, and later appears in a thousand-zhang battle-armored form 3200 3559.

Personality

Blade Ghost is proud, competitive, and initially vicious. He threatens Xu Taiping’s companions to force a contest, treats the younger cultivator’s attacks with contempt, and repeatedly kills and revives him inside the domain. Touching the back of his neck provokes such fury that he declares himself willing to suffer tenfold oath backlash to kill Xu Taiping 201 202 261.

His devotion to the blade outweighs even his dignity. When faced with destruction, he kneels and begs Xu Taiping to continue testing blades with him. His apparent confusion also disappears when survival is at stake: he conceals a Demon Lotus as leverage and deploys it when Fairy Lingyue nearly destroys him 270 271.

As an instructor, he is exacting rather than reassuring. He criticizes technical achievement that does not translate into killing power and insists that a blade cultivator commit everything to the weapon in hand. Nevertheless, his concern becomes increasingly personal: he helps Xu Taiping while undergoing his own tribulation and eventually speaks of staking everything on him 1975 2900 3314.

His later reflections temper that confidence with regret. He admits that a lifetime spent sharpening his blade and pursuing the Immortal Domain cost him the youthful outlook that once embraced all of heaven and earth 3314.

Abilities & Skills

Blade Mastery

Blade Ghost’s saber techniques eventually appear seamless and natural, unrestricted by particular moves or forms 3197.

  • Precision and speed: Stops Spring Tiger between two fingers, breaks Xu Taiping’s Blade Force, and numbs both arms with a flick of the weapon 201.
  • Defensive Blade Qi: Shreds Ice Breath Art and intercepts physical attacks; Xu Taiping’s sustained golden-flame punches can temporarily break through it 202.
  • Integrated power control: A single blade-drawing stance produces more than a hundred changes across true essence, qi and blood, and divine soul power 2083.
  • Overwhelming single strikes: Cleaves an evil ghost and its mount apart, then later tears open a formation containing three or four hundred mountain bandits 3197 3200.
  • Accumulated blade shadows: Merges lingering shadows and undissipated Blade Force into one attack, breaking Zhao Xuantan’s defense and severing his saber 3559.

Ultimate-Realm Blade Strike

Using the Zhuosang Saber, Blade Ghost spreads Blade Force beyond the hundred-li reach of Xu Taiping’s probing divine sense, then compresses it into a fine silver thread 3529.

  • Cuts through a golden fist shadow, Mirror Ghost’s blood mirror, and Mirror Ghost itself.
  • Extends intersecting threads of blade light around all three Blood Garments and slices through them upon sheathing his saber.
  • Remains limited by his vessel: he says the Thousand Faces Puppet’s body falls short of even one ten-thousandth of his own physique 3529.

Infernal Blade Prison / Avīci Blade Domain

The blood-red altar used for early contests is only an entrance to Blade Ghost’s true domain, which lies farther below 792.

Layer / Feature Documented function
Early blood-red domain Contains a sacrificial platform, ruined walls, a blood sea, and grinding discs. Blade Ghost can transform its contents into blades and combine them into one weapon 201 269.
First layer: Heart-Pulling Its violent winds are Blade Qi. It holds Demon Venerable-level blade cultivators whose combat strength exceeds ordinary cultivators of that realm 794 798.
Second layer Provides a desert training environment where Blade Ghost summons Sand King Worms in escalating numbers 1174.
Third layer Holds an elderly Blade Slave whose restrictions Blade Ghost can remove to increase the challenge 1190 2564.
Fourth layer Serves as the battlefield against the evil god. Blade Ghost warns that the enemy can devour the domain, endangering everyone inside 1351.
Ninth layer Contains a remaining half-flask of Hidden Immortal Wine that he offers to retrieve 1351.
Tenth layer Enables difficult-to-detect spirit travel into distant sects and other heavens, allowing use of their cultivation artifacts. Destruction of the projected form costs divine essence rather than the traveler’s life 2242 2265.
Eleventh layer Refined from a scene of a Remote Antiquity Battlefield and suitable for joint training 2562.
Twelfth layer Provides a training ground from which Xu Taiping gains further blade understanding 2565.
Fifteenth layer Houses Fire-Eyes Ghost Wardens, summoned after integration with the Avīci Hell inheritance. They punish evil ghosts and can temper Xu Taiping’s physique through repeated blows 3869.
Sixteenth layer Used to imprison the Shadow Lord; also described as containing stronger Ghost Wardens for further training 3481 3869.

Additional domain powers include:

  • Regeneration: Restores his own body after Fairy Lingyue pounds it to pulp inside his domain 268.
  • Revival and healing of trainees: Repeatedly revives Xu Taiping and can heal his accumulated domain injuries with a gesture 261 772.
  • Time dilation: One night outside can equal one year within. Unhealed domain injuries can leave worsening phantom pain after departure 772.
  • External imprisonment: Manifests the prison as a blood orb and draws Heaven-Gate Rogue Person’s eight clones inside, followed by his allies 3979.
  • Limits: Fairy Lingyue can seize control of and shatter his early domain. Later, Heaven-Gate Rogue Person’s Edict-infused treasures break through his attack and severely wound him 269 3981.

Blade-Domain Instruction

Blade Ghost teaches that establishing a blade domain requires martial dao ultimate intent, a Martial God Physique, and blade techniques cultivated to the ultimate realm 766.

  • All Dharmas Forbidden: An introductory domain ability operating within one zhang; his explanation also associates this range with perceiving an opponent’s intentions 766.
  • Ten Steps, One Kill: Allows its user to remain one step ahead within ten steps 766.
  • Teaching terminology: The supplied passages call this introductory domain both “Eight-Foot” and “Eight-Zhang” 766 1175.
  • Training method: Forces Xu Taiping to comprehend ultimate intent himself before providing further instruction, rather than supplying every answer 766.

Possession and Spirit Manifestation

  • Borrowed bodies: Can control Xu Taiping’s Origin Beginning Clone and the Thousand Faces Puppet Body 2030 3249.
  • Vessel requirements: His divine soul is too powerful for Xu Taiping’s Specific Physique when its available qi, blood, and true essence are insufficient 2030.
  • Soulfire-assisted manifestation: Uses Soulfire Stones to recover and manifest in Three Paths Village, where his spirit form feels indistinguishable from a true body 3191 3196.
  • Blade-light movement: Travels as blade light, carries companions within blade qi, and merges with enormous blade shadows to strike or pin enemies 3281 3284 3496.
  • Hurricane transformation: Grabs Xu Taiping and becomes a hundred-zhang hurricane during the Jade Appraisal Pavilion ambush 3591.
