History
Ye Lingyun’s Early Years
The original Ye Lingyun was a low-status collateral-branch child whose failed Martial Soul Awakening made him a target of mockery, bullying, and beatings. After a scientist from Blue Star took possession of his body, he fought back against Ye Biao and began studying in the family library 1.
His early accomplishments did not immediately erase the family’s prejudice. Recovering steward Ye Zhong’s Wind Spirit Marten earned the steward’s praise, but other young clansmen dismissed his work as mere errands. His later victories in sparring attracted Elder Ye Xuanfeng, who granted him access to the library’s restricted second floor 2 3 4.
Ye Family Small Tournament
The family held a youth martial tournament on its training grounds, attended by clansmen and representatives of friendly factions from Greenrock City. The elderly patriarch opened the competition, which consisted of preliminaries, a second round, and a final 6.
| Round | Ye Lingyun’s Opponent | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminaries | Ye Ming, a collateral-branch disciple | Ye Lingyun won using his movement and palm skills, followed by Starburst Appears 6. |
| Second round | Ye Bao, a direct-line disciple and Ye Hu’s younger cousin | Ye Lingyun overcame Ye Bao’s spear attacks and won with Brilliant Star River 6. |
| Final | Ye Long, the strongest of the family’s younger generation before the tournament | Ye Lingyun unveiled Spirit-Sense Void-Splitting Slash, broke Ye Long’s defenses, and forced him to concede 6 10. |
Before the final, Ye Hu and Ye Bao bribed disciples to spread cheating allegations and hired independent cultivators to ambush Ye Lingyun. He survived the attack and went on to become champion. The patriarch praised both finalists and promised Ye Lingyun substantial rewards 7 10.
Conservative Opposition and the Spirit Mine Dispute
Ye Lingyun’s victory earned him a banquet, a private cultivation abode, treasury selections, and a monthly herb allowance. Conservative elders feared that a rising collateral descendant would threaten their control of resources and authority. They spread allegations about his tournament victory, substituted inferior herbs for his promised supplies, and later falsified his resource-consumption records 11 12.
The conservatives also burdened him with difficult duties, including a dispute at a jointly operated spirit mine on the edge of family territory. Ye Lingyun negotiated a settlement that reduced the family’s share while preserving a reasonable profit; its partner would expand mining and improve extraction efficiency, with technical and manpower support from the family 12.
When his opponents accused him of accepting bribes, Ye Lingyun presented the agreement and the partner’s letter of thanks to the patriarch. The resulting investigation exposed the slander, led to severe punishment for those involved, and stripped the leading conservative elder of some authority 12.
Ye Lingyun’s Departure
The conservative factions continued building an alliance against Ye Lingyun despite their punishment. Recognizing both the danger of prolonged infighting and the family’s cultivation limits, he decided to leave for opportunities in the wider world 13.
The old clan leader supported his decision and gave him the Clan Leader Token, allowing him to request assistance from family forces and nearby branches within its territory. Leaving the estate did not erase his connection to the clan: he still identified himself as coming from the Ye Family when registering for Lingxi Academy’s assessments 13 20.
Organization and Leadership
- Patriarchal authority — The elderly patriarch presides over major events, awards resources, orders investigations, and disciplines elders and other members 6 11 12.
- Main line and collateral branches — Lineage affects social standing. Ye Bao explicitly treats the gap between direct-line and collateral disciples as difficult to cross, while conservative elders invoke main-line birth to justify their dominance 6 11.
- Elders and stewards — Elders oversee areas such as business affairs and can authorize special privileges; stewards handle duties including cultivation-resource accounting 4 12.
- Conservative factions — Several groups control portions of the family’s resources and authority. Their opposition to Ye Lingyun centers on preserving that control 11 13.
- Territorial branches — Nearby branches can provide assistance to a bearer of the Clan Leader Token 13.
Notable Members
- Elder Ye Xuanfeng — Recognizes Ye Lingyun’s understanding of Martial Souls and grants him second-floor library access 4.
- Ye Zhong — Steward and owner of the Wind Spirit Marten recovered by Ye Lingyun 2.
- Ye Lingyun — Collateral descendant who rises from a failed awakening to become the Small Tournament champion 1 10.
- Ye Long — Leading young cultivator and practitioner of the family’s top martial technique, the Dragon Flame Heaven-Dominating Art; loses the final to Ye Lingyun 6 7 10.
- Ye Hu and Ye Bao — Cousins who organize slander and an ambush against Ye Lingyun; Ye Bao is a prominent direct-line disciple 6 7.
- Ye Ming — Collateral-branch disciple with a solid Martial Soul foundation; defeated in the tournament preliminaries 6.
- Ye Biao — Nephew of a minor steward who uses that connection to bully younger clansmen, particularly the original Ye Lingyun 1.
