Background / History
Han Li comes from a rural background and maintains ties with his family, sending silver home each month. Doctor Mo accepts him and Zhang Tie as nominal disciples during a Seven Mysteries Sect recruitment. Because Han Li’s spiritual roots include wood, he can practice the Evergreen Technique, initially taught to him as a nameless formula 5 8.
Three years before the events of Chapter 18, Han Li discovers the Little Green Bottle in Divine Hand Valley. Its herb-maturing liquid becomes his greatest secret and enables him to produce cultivation pills far beyond what his ordinary resources would allow 6 7 18.
Appearance
- Build: Slender, with black hair and a dark complexion 5 13 15.
- Clothing: Wears a blue robe washed almost white during a pill delivery to Jing Wen 15.
- Bearing: Often presents a frightened or deferential expression while keeping his gaze clear and assessing possible responses 5.
Personality
Han Li is cautious, observant, and capable of disguising his intentions. When Li Feiyu threatens him, he deliberately sounds panicked while preparing a concealed attack. After Jing Wen intervenes, he continues checking escape routes despite outwardly expressing gratitude 5.
His restraint is practical rather than forgiving. He considers killing Li Feiyu but decides that a disappearance would create trouble within the sect; instead, he uses knowledge of Li Feiyu’s secret to obtain martial arts manuals. He likewise conceals his cultivation from Doctor Mo and carefully phrases his first heart-demon oath to preserve room for his own cultivation 5 8 20.
His family is a major vulnerability: Doctor Mo’s threats against them force him to submit temporarily and then seek outside help. He also responds strongly to protection and kindness, becoming visibly emotional when Jing Wen promises to safeguard him and later offers a route into Yellow Maple Valley 8 9 13 28.
Despite his caution, Han Li remains inexperienced in the Cultivation World. He does not initially recognize his own energy as spiritual power, know the grades of flying swords, or understand market prices. His enthusiasm for immortal arts repeatedly gives Jing Wen leverage in their negotiations 15 18 27 28.
Abilities & Skills
Evergreen Technique
Han Li’s principal cultivation method is the Evergreen Technique, which has thirteen layers in its complete form 20.
- His four spiritual roots satisfy its requirements 8.
- At the fourth layer, he can control the apparent strength of his internal qi well enough to deceive Doctor Mo’s examination 8.
- He later recognizes that the energy produced by the “Nameless Formula” powers his spells 18.
- Jing Wen initially withholds further cultivation instructions, then supplies the seventh and eighth layers through a separate transaction 15 20.
Fireball Technique
Han Li learns the Fireball Technique from the basic spell manual purchased from Jing Wen. His breakthrough comes when he follows the principle that “Qi follows intent” instead of mechanically repeating its incantation 15 18.
- First produces a soybean-sized flame lasting three breaths 18.
- Subsequently forms fist-sized fireballs, launches one into a rock face, and learns to hold and extinguish them deliberately 18.
- This success motivates him to experiment with growing millennium spirit medicine 18.
Pill Refining and Herb Cultivation
Han Li uses accelerated herbs to refine Yellow Dragon Pills and later supplies Golden Marrow Pills when Jing Wen develops a tolerance to the former 6 7 20.
- Early pills suffer from under-aged ingredients but retain at least eighty percent of their proper potency 6.
- Improved batches have smooth golden surfaces and substantially better quality 7.
- The Little Green Bottle allows him to grow millennium spirit medicine for trade 18 20.
- He hides surplus pills and controls how much he delivers to avoid revealing his full production capacity 7.
Flying-Sword Control
Han Li demonstrates basic magical-artifact control when testing the Azure Leaf Sword 20.
- Activates it by reciting an incantation and infusing spiritual power 20.
- Splits a millstone-sized boulder and recalls the sword 20.
- His initial control is unpracticed, producing a crooked flight path and recoil that numbs his arm 20.
Medicine and Mortal Martial Arts
- Develops a healer’s instincts in Divine Hand Valley and attempts to assist Li Feiyu during the Marrow-Extracting Pill’s backlash 5.
- Obtains mortal martial arts from Li Feiyu, but lacks the martial true qi needed to make them effective against an expert such as Doctor Mo 8 9.
- Later abandons those martial arts to concentrate on pill refining and acquiring immortal arts 15.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Little Green Bottle: Jade-green bottle that collects mysterious spiritual liquid beneath moonlight. The liquid rapidly matures medicinal herbs, including millennium spirit medicine; Han Li carefully conceals its existence 7 18 20.
- Sleeve Arrow: Concealed weapon prepared during Li Feiyu’s attack. Jing Wen extracts and dismantles it with the Object-Driving Technique 5.
- Basic spell manual: Contains eight spells, including the Fireball Technique, Wooden Shield Technique, Object-Driving Technique, Fire Pellet Technique, and Wind-Riding Art. Ownership of the instructions does not establish mastery of every spell 15.
- Evergreen Technique continuation: Manual containing the seventh and eighth layers, obtained after reaching the sixth layer 20.
- Azure Leaf Sword: Low-grade flying sword purchased from Jing Wen; Han Li successfully tests it against a boulder 20 28.
- Azure Nether: Superior-grade flying sword selected over a middle-grade alternative. Its power resonates strongly with Han Li’s spiritual energy when he grips it 28.
- Protective talismans: Collection including Diamond, Fireball, Concealment, Lightening, Water Arrow, and Thunderclap Talismans, bought to broaden his survival options 27.
- Ascension Token: Allows its holder to enter Yellow Maple Valley without the entrance trial and receive a Foundation Establishment Pill. Han Li acquires the token, but the supplied chapters do not show him receiving the pill 28 29.
- Corpse Worm Pill and antidote: Doctor Mo forces him to swallow the pill under threat of its worm hatching after a year; Jing Wen later provides an antidote 8 13.
Relationships
- Jing Wen — Rescuer, protector, cultivation guide, and creditor. Their relationship develops through exchanges of pills and spirit medicine for protection, spells, and equipment; Han Li later calls him “Senior Brother” and swears never to betray his kindness 5 13 15 27 28.
- Mo Juren / Doctor Mo — Nominal master who teaches him the Evergreen Technique, then uses poison and threats against his family to compel obedience. Han Li hires Jing Wen to remove him 8 9 13.
- Li Feiyu — Initially threatens to kill Han Li for discovering his Marrow-Extracting Pill secret. Han Li spares him and uses that knowledge to obtain martial arts manuals 5 8.
- Zhang Tie — Fellow nominal disciple of Doctor Mo; taught the Elephant Armor Skill because his roots cannot support the Evergreen Technique 8.
- Parents and relatives — Receive money from Han Li; their safety becomes Doctor Mo’s strongest means of coercion 8.
- Yu Zitong — Cultivator behind the possession threat involving Mo Juren. Jing Wen reports killing the cultivator and retrieves Yu Zitong’s storage pouch 12 13.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rescue and Removal of Doctor Mo
Jing Wen saves Han Li from Li Feiyu, then demands repayment in Yellow Dragon Pills. His offer to handle future troubles gives Han Li an alternative when Doctor Mo poisons him and threatens his family 5 8 9.
Han Li requests Doctor Mo’s death, but Jing Wen instead removes the possession threat and arranges for Mo Juren to leave Divine Hand Valley and work in Lan Prefecture. Han Li accepts the outcome after receiving an antidote, protection, and a reduced payment demand 12 13 14.
Cultivation Through Trade
Han Li’s herb production finances his access to spells, cultivation instructions, and magical artifacts. The major documented terms are:
| Transaction | Agreed Payment | Terms / Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Rescue from Li Feiyu | Ten bottles of Yellow Dragon Pills | Payable in monthly installments 5. |
| Removal of Doctor Mo and associated threats | Initially 160 bottles; reduced to 120 | Five bottles per month after the revised agreement 9 13. |
| Eight basic spells | 100 bottles | Total outstanding pill debt stated as 159 bottles after the sale; cultivation method withheld 15. |
| Azure Leaf Sword | Seven stalks of millennium spirit medicine | Purchased alongside further cultivation instructions 20. |
| Evergreen Technique, seventh and eighth layers | Eight stalks | Combined fifteen-stalk debt secured by a heart-demon oath to repay as quickly as possible 20. |
| Protective talisman collection | Sixty stalks | One hundred years allowed for repayment 27. |
| Azure Nether | Sixty stalks | Chosen over the middle-grade flying sword 28. |
| Yellow Maple Valley Ascension Token | One thousand stalks | One thousand years allowed; Han Li swears a broader oath of repayment and loyalty 28. |
Entry into the Wider Cultivation World
Before departing, Jing Wen explains the dangers of rogue cultivation and the advantages of the Seven Great Sects. Han Li responds by purchasing protective talismans, a stronger sword, and the Ascension Token rather than relying on cultivation alone 27 28.
After Han Li turns eighteen, the pair travel to Mount Tai Nan. Jing Wen assures him that he can present the token publicly, then leaves him to enter the Ascension to Immortality Conference alone 29.
Notable Quotes
“Rest assured. Within one year, I will reach the fourth layer.”
— Han Li, submitting temporarily after Doctor Mo threatens his family 8.
“Should I achieve anything in the future, I will never betray the kindness Senior Brother Jing Wen has shown me today.”
— Part of his heart-demon great oath 28.
Trivia
- The “plant-and-wood sacred body” is not his actual constitution. Han Li explicitly knows that his herb-growing ability comes from the Little Green Bottle, but avoids correcting Jing Wen’s explanation because doing so could expose the bottle 20 27.
- Jing Wen believes his early intervention against Mo Juren deprives Han Li of a formative ordeal, leaving him less mature—and easier to influence—than his counterpart at the same point in the original story 13.
- After selling Han Li the Ascension Token, Jing Wen privately describes his actions as putting the plot back on its intended path 28.
