Organization and Leadership
Yue Emperor’s Control
Jing Wen understands the cult to be the Yue Emperor’s “Spirit Medicine Garden”: its cultivators are cultivated as medicinal ingredients rather than protected as disciples. Foundation Establishment members are especially valuable because their cultivation produces Blood-Congealing Five Elements Pills 1 14.
- Tie Luo is identified in Jing Wen’s knowledge as an external incarnation of the Yue Emperor. Jing Wen suspects the other Foundation Establishment figures may also be incarnations, but lacks firm evidence for all of them 14 44.
- The Four Blood Attendants formerly presided over blood sacrifices. According to Ge Hong, the Young Prince, then around the eleventh layer of Qi Refining, had handled that duty for the preceding two years 44.
- Regional stewards administer individual bases. Steward Li controls Still Garden and is at the tenth layer of Qi Refining 40 44.
Branches and Duties
| Branch / Position | Function and Restrictions |
|---|---|
| Reconnaissance Squad | Locates targets and gathers intelligence. Members are forbidden from conducting hunts alone; even successful unauthorized captures receive no additional contribution reward 43 46. |
| Hunting Squad | Carries out capture operations. Jing Wen is formally admitted after presenting himself as a sixth-layer Qi Refining cultivator 46. |
| Enforcement Hall | Its black-robed officers are encountered during the purging of low-contribution cultists. One officer carries a Soul-Reaping Bell 2. |
| Stronghold stewards | Assign missions, administer rewards, and select members for sacrifice when their base fails to supply sufficient offerings 40 43. |
The eight bases have separate duties and spheres of influence. They cooperate on operations but also compete behind the scenes 44. Under the cult’s usual practice, one outpost can handle two late-stage Qi Refining targets; capturing four requires cooperation between two outposts 42.
Locations
| Location | Significance |
|---|---|
| Capital City | Headquarters and the center of the cult’s surveillance network. All Seven Great Sects also maintain informants there 2 40. |
| Still Garden | Secret stronghold concealed within a grand residence with vermilion gates; administered by Steward Li 2 40. |
| Imperial City Altar | Central blood-sacrifice site. Entry requires a cult identity token 45. |
| Main Altar | Presented by Jing Wen as the place to obtain cultivation arts for use after Foundation Establishment 49. |
| Blood Pool | Destination for cultists taken away as sacrificial offerings 2. |
| Taibai Stronghold | Located behind a medicinal herb shop in the western city. Liu Qing becomes its first official member and receives its captain’s token 49. |
Cultivation System
Cultivation Route
| Stage / Realm | Method | Benefits and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Qi Refining — Burning Blood Art | Introductory cultivation art, described as the simplest and easiest to learn 40. | Can reach Qi Refining great perfection, but cannot provide a breakthrough to Foundation Establishment 40. |
| Qi Refining — Fiendish Demon Art | Most cult members cultivate this art; full Qi Refining mastery extends to the thirteenth layer 40 45. | Produces more condensed spiritual power and offers a route to Foundation Establishment without a Foundation Establishment Pill 40 41. |
| Foundation Establishment | At peak Qi Refining, baleful qi is used to force open meridian barriers 14. | The process is dangerous. Steward Li claims a fifty-percent chance of success without a Foundation Establishment Pill 40. |
| Late Foundation Establishment Great Perfection | Five-element baleful qi condenses within the dantian into a Blood-Congealing Five Elements Pill 14. | Further ordinary cultivation is blocked; advancement requires the secret Baleful Core Art 14. |
| Baleful Core | The practitioner extracts, refines, and reforges the internal pill into a “false golden core” 14. | Slightly weaker than a true golden core, but likewise extends lifespan. Jing Wen’s prior knowledge places the cult’s cultivation ceiling at early Golden Core 3 14. |
Baleful Beads
- Spiritual-root transformation: Practicing the Fiendish Demon Art mutates the practitioner’s spiritual root into a Baleful Bead, restricting future cultivation to the cult’s arts 48 49.
- Transfer between people: Bead transfer is uncommon but known within the cult. Red Rose gives her bead to Jing Wen, enabling him to cultivate despite having no natural spiritual roots 1 2.
- Dependence on medicine: Jing Wen’s implanted bead prevents him from independently drawing in ambient spiritual energy, making pills necessary for advancement. Liu Qing’s transformed root can sense ambient spiritual qi, but absorbs it only with great difficulty 1 49.
- Backlash: Cultivation consumes blood and vitality. Accumulated baleful energy can cause madness and cultivation deviation 1 7.
Fiendish Demon Art
- Cult advancement has comparatively few bottlenecks during Qi Refining, making its methods attractive to cultivators unable to progress through orthodox cultivation 3 12.
- Conversion from the Burning Blood Art does not require restarting at the first layer, but must proceed gradually to avoid reversed spiritual flow and meridian damage 41.
- Documented physical changes include a metallic sheen on the skin, black markings, and scale-like patterns 41 46 49.
- Many cult arts originate from fragments of the Profound Yin Scripture, according to Jing Wen’s knowledge 40.
- Jing Wen tells prospective recruits that the cult possesses a Nascent Soul-reaching art. The provided events do not verify that claim 48.
Blood Sacrifices and Rewards
Sacrificial Supply
- Frequency: Blood sacrifices are held every three months 43 44.
- Preferred offerings: Living captured cultivators retain more useful blood vitality than corpses, whose vitality dissipates over time 43.
- Internal victims: If a base supplies too few suitable captives, its own members can be selected for sacrifice. Steward Li determines the victims at his outpost 43.
- Contribution purges: Jing Wen witnesses low-contribution members being removed during a monthly purge 2.
- Reuse of casualties: Dead cult members can also be used as offerings, although their bodies yield few contribution points 43.
Pills and Tokens
- Blood Pills — Refined through blood sacrifices and usable by Baleful Bead cultivators. Their potency weakens over time 3 47.
- Blood-Replenishing Pills — Help replace the blood and vitality consumed by cult cultivation 1 7.
- Identity tokens — Record contribution points, establish membership, and permit entry into restricted sites such as the Imperial City Altar 45.
- Taibai captain’s token — Records contributions and entitles its holder to three additional Blood Pills every three months 49.
Membership and Rules
- Recruitment base: According to Jing Wen, most members are converted cultivators who have lost hope of further advancement. He knows of third-layer recruits who died before completing a single mission 3.
- Core obligation: Members must actively capture the targets designated by the cult. Its rulebook also explains branch duties, access to advanced arts, and pill exchanges 40.
- Technique eligibility: Seventh-layer Qi Refining recruits normally qualify to receive the Fiendish Demon Art. Steward Li grants Jing Wen an early exception because Red Rose had been a member and practitioner 40.
- Independent hunts: Separate capture operations require the steward’s approval 45.
- Restricted teachings: Jing Wen warns that reading the complete Fiendish Demon Art without permission can provoke pursuit by the cult 49.
- Patronage: Gifts influence advancement and rewards. Steward Li accepts Jing Wen’s offerings and later grants him an additional ten percent of contribution points 40 43.
Notable Members
- Yue Emperor — Controlling figure who treats Foundation Establishment cultivators as future medicinal pills 1 14.

- Red Rose — Seventh-layer cultivator and Jing Wen’s mother; transfers her Baleful Bead to him before dying 1 2.
- Jing Wen — Reconnaissance recruit who later joins the Hunting Squad. Publicly serves the cult while concealing his strength and planning revenge 2 3 40 46.

Story Role
Jing Wen’s Escape and Return
After Red Rose’s death, Jing Wen implants her Baleful Bead to avoid remaining a helpless mortal. Steward Li enrolls him in the Reconnaissance Squad and permits him to leave the Capital to bury his mother. At her grave, Jing Wen blames the cult’s dangerous missions for her death and vows revenge 1 2 3.
Four years later, Jing Wen returns under the Breath-Concealing Art. He secures the Fiendish Demon Art through apparent loyalty and gifts, while secretly seeking the Profound Yin Scripture as a means to continue cultivation and pursue revenge 40.
Capture Operations
A raid on three rogue cultivators at the Green Maple Inn leaves Still Garden badly depleted and Steward Li seriously wounded. Jing Wen returns with the only living captive, concealing his role in the deaths of fellow cultists. His apparent success earns Li’s favor and supplies an offering for the approaching sacrifice 42 43.
Jing Wen subsequently partners with Ge Hong and enters the Hunting Squad. Their first documented independent collaboration captures Elder Bai, who had concealed himself among mortal gangs 45 46.
Taibai Stronghold
Jing Wen recruits four cultivators by offering the Fiendish Demon Art and a prospect of Foundation Establishment. Liu Qing tests the art first and becomes Taibai Stronghold’s first official member. Jing Wen later attacks all four, leaving them alive but mentally destroyed through the Soul-Disturbing Art and medicinal pills 48 49 50.
