Background / History
Rise in Lan Prefecture
Barely past thirty, Mo Juren founded the Startling Flood Dragon Society, one of Lan Prefecture’s three dominant powers. His martial skill and intelligence brought him wealth, influence, and a formidable reputation among both righteous and criminal factions 8.
A trusted subordinate later betrayed and ambushed him, leaving him gravely poisoned. Although his medical knowledge kept the injuries under control, he could not cure himself completely. He abandoned his established power and family to search for medicine 8.
Yu Zitong and the Yin Soul Curse
During his search, Mo Juren encountered Yu Zitong, a cultivator severely wounded in a battle over a spirit herb. When Yu Zitong refused to give him medicine, Mo Juren followed him and attacked with a specially prepared poisoned arrow. Before dying, Yu Zitong cast the Blood Arrow Yin Soul Curse, lodged his primordial spirit inside Mo Juren, and caused his body to age rapidly 8.
The two subsequently reached an agreement to survive. Yu Zitong taught him secret arts to slow the aging and introduced possession as a means of rebirth. Mo Juren needed a young practitioner capable of reaching the fourth layer of the Evergreen Technique to serve as a vessel 8.
Doctor Mo and Han Li
Using the identity of Doctor Mo, he joined the Seven Mysteries Sect after saving Sect Master Wang. His treatment of injuries and refinement of pills earned him respect, while the sect’s disciple recruitment gave him access to potential cultivation candidates 8.
He accepted Han Li and Zhang Tie as nominal disciples. Han Li possessed the wood spiritual root needed for the Evergreen Technique; Zhang Tie did not, so Mo Juren taught him the Elephant Armor Skill instead. Mo Juren invested treasured spirit herbs and lengthy searches for medicinal resources into accelerating Han Li’s progress 8.
After another battle depleted his vitality, Mo Juren believed he had at most one year left. Unaware that Han Li had secretly reached the fourth layer, he immobilized him, revealed his identity, and claimed that fourth-layer qi circulation and massage could restore his vitality. He then forced Han Li to swallow a Corpse Worm Pill and threatened his family to secure compliance 8.
Defeat and Recruitment by Jing Wen
Han Li hired Jing Wen to remove his master. Jing Wen ambushed Mo Juren with the Water Ball Technique, stripped away his concealed equipment, and destroyed Yu Zitong’s remnant soul. Despite Han Li’s expectation that Mo Juren would be killed, Jing Wen kept him alive 9 11 13.
Jing Wen valued Mo Juren’s intelligence and adaptability, particularly his success in killing a cultivator while still a mortal. Mo Juren initially tried to portray himself as Yu Zitong’s innocent victim, then offered wealth, martial manuals, his daughters’ service, and finally his own service 12 14.
Jing Wen offered him Spirit Seizure: a method intended to grant cultivation eligibility by taking another person’s spiritual root. He supplied the Burning Blood Art, extended Mo Juren’s lifespan, and sent him to Lan Prefecture to find candidates, emphasizing the greater success rate between blood relatives. Privately, Jing Wen intended to use him to test Baleful Bead transfer and potentially raise a future source of cultivation pills 14.
The Mo Residence Experiment
Mo Juren secretly returned to his household after seven years away. He gave the Burning Blood Art to his five wives and allowed them to teach trusted people under supervision, while demanding secrecy about both the art and his return 30.
Jin and Mo Yuzhu showed aptitude, with Yuzhu progressing faster than her mother. Mo Juren demanded daily reports on his daughter’s cultivation. Over the following years, more than four hundred people tried the art, but only Jin and Yuzhu achieved success 32 35.
When Jing Wen finally arrived, he forced Mo Juren to choose between them. Mo Juren chose Jin to spare his beloved eldest daughter, then deceived his wife into believing that a pill for advancing her cultivation would be ready the next morning 35.
Mo Juren knocked Jin unconscious, extracted her Baleful Bead, and attempted to fuse it into his own dantian. The bead rejected him and nearly killed him. Jing Wen revived him and explained that bloodline connection was necessary, granting one final attempt under threat of death 36.
Mo Juren then incapacitated Yuzhu and used her for the second attempt. This time, the bead took root. With most of his curse damage reversed, he accepted cultivation supplies and pledged loyalty to Jing Wen in exchange for future rewards earned through assigned tasks 39.
Appearance
- Before the curse: Handsome and imposing, with the bearing of a powerful martial leader 8.
- As Doctor Mo: Prematurely aged, sickly, and frequently coughing; his ashen face makes him appear decades older than his actual age 8.
- Advanced curse damage: Withered hands, a stooped body, sunken bluish-black features, and writhing black markings and tendrils across his face and neck 30 31 35.
- After Baleful Bead fusion: The tendrils dissipate, his skin tightens, and many wrinkles disappear. He regains the appearance of a man in his fifties or sixties rather than his original youthful appearance 39.
Personality
Mo Juren is calculating, resourceful, and quick to adapt to a stronger opponent. After realizing Jing Wen is a cultivator, he abandons resistance, shifts responsibility for his deeds onto Yu Zitong, and searches for a way to make himself useful. Jing Wen recognizes both his acting ability and the speed with which he turns a threat to his life into an opportunity to pursue immortality 14.
His desire for cultivation eventually becomes stronger than his fear of death. He accepts Spirit Seizure without moral hesitation and spends years searching for suitable practitioners. He maintains strict secrecy and interlocking surveillance over those taught the Burning Blood Art 14 35.
His family attachments are genuine but do not outweigh his ambition. He initially sacrifices Jin to protect Yuzhu and mourns what he is doing; after that attempt fails, he turns on his daughter as well. His remorse repeatedly gives way to cold resolve 35 36 39.

Trivia
- Mo Juren gives different accounts of his encounter with Yu Zitong. The narration describes a dispute over medicine followed by a poisoned-arrow attack; he tells his wives that he explored ancient ruins at Black Wind Valley, poisoned Yu Zitong’s tea with Seven Absolutes Powder, and obtained the Burning Blood Art from him 8 30.
- Jing Wen explicitly notes that his intervention removes Han Li’s original early struggle against Mo Juren, leaving Han Li less mature and easier for him to manage 13.
