Background / History

The Wind Snow Family had guarded Glory City for generations before Ye Zong became City Lord. In his youth, Ye Mo asked whether he would protect the city even at the cost of his life. Ye Zong accepted that responsibility and later taught Ye Ziyun that their family were the city's sentinels, not its rulers 187 255.

Ye Zong adopted Ye Han after finding him on the streets and raised him as a prospective successor. He genuinely regarded Ye Han as family, despite the Wind Snow elders' reservations about an outsider inheriting the City Lord position 49 122 124 175.

His responsibilities left little time for his wife and daughter. He believed his wife had died of illness and blamed himself for failing to care for her adequately. The Sky Screen later revealed that she had been poisoned, devastating both him and Ye Ziyun 124 172.

Personality

Ye Zong consistently places Glory City's survival above personal comfort, pride, and safety. He accepts Nie Li's help despite their arguments, gives up his courtyard for the defensive array, and remains in the city when others search for the missing Nie Li because abandoning his post would leave Glory City unguarded 88 108 112.

His stern treatment of Ye Ziyun conceals considerable affection. In the Sky Screen history, he explains that his deliberate coldness was intended to discourage the elders from making her City Lord and spare her the dangers of political life. Nevertheless, he recognizes that his duties and choices have hurt his family 110 124.

His affection for Ye Han makes him reluctant to accept warnings about the boy's ambitions. After the betrayal is revealed, he acknowledges that he mistook ambition and calculation for useful qualities in a successor 49 177.

Nie Li frequently provokes his temper, especially through premature “father-in-law” greetings and advances toward Ye Ziyun. Their rivalry also draws out a less guarded side of him: after turning the tables on Nie Li during the array wager, he laughs more freely than Ye Xiu has seen in years 109 114.
