Background / History

Xiao Ning'er is the daughter of Xiao Yunfeng, patriarch of the Winged Dragon Family. The Sacred Family controls over eighty percent of her family’s businesses, leaving it dependent on their support. Her childhood betrothal to Shen Fei is part of that unequal relationship; Xiao Yi promotes the marriage to secure resources and advance his own position 2 4 18 35.

She cultivates relentlessly to become strong enough to reject the marriage and control her own future. In Nie Li’s previous life, her illness destroys that route to independence. She cuts her hair, renounces the Xiao family, and enters the Black Devil Forest alone, never returning to Glory City. Later revelations establish that this disappearance was not her death 4 6 7 88 257.

Extreme Cold Syndrome

At their first encounter in the Trial Grounds, Nie Li discovers that her painful bruises are symptoms of extreme cold syndrome. Her inherently cold constitution, nighttime cultivation, and damaging family technique have allowed cold energy to obstruct her energy channels. Further advancement without treatment could leave her bedridden, destroy her cultivation, or kill her 6 7.

Nie Li revises her technique and begins treating her. Her bruises subsequently fade considerably, preventing the deterioration associated with her original fate 7 17.

Previous-Life Identity and the Remnant Page

While Nie Li is missing after the Demon Lord’s abduction, Ning'er experiences a vision of her previous-life self entering the Black Devil Forest. She sees that this version of herself survived through something her maternal grandfather had sealed within her during childhood: a remnant page of the Book of Time and Space Spirit. The page blazes with light during the vision, which then shifts to an underground cavern containing the unconscious Nie Li 88.

She later acknowledges that she can remember fragments beyond the fate first shown by the Sky Screen, including being rescued by a young man and eventually being surrounded alongside him 250.

On the Sky Screen, her farewell to Nie Li reveals a further dream in which she became a disfigured woman, fought endlessly, and found meaning after meeting him. Nie Li connects her account to Xiao Ning, the silver-haired masked woman he rescued in his previous life. Engagement and Later Life

The Winged Dragon Family breaks off Ning'er’s childhood engagement to Shen Fei with the Wind Snow Family’s support. Although Shen Fei and Shen Xiu continue asserting the agreement’s validity in events shown on the Sky Screen, the current timeline moves toward a different arrangement 34 78 180.

After watching Nie Li protect Ning'er during the fifth Sky Screen, Xiao Yunfeng considers arranging an engagement between them. By the end of the ninth Sky Screen, the Heavenly Marks, Winged Dragon, and Wind Snow families have formalized the engagement arrangements involving Nie Li, Ning'er, and Ye Ziyun. Her trust in Nie Li develops into unusually open affection. She makes him breakfast, assists his business plans without demanding an explanation, and tends to him when he is exhausted. Although she understands his attachment to Ye Ziyun, she declares that she will not give up and would be content to support and protect him 9 18 24 27.

She is particularly uncompromising when Nie Li is threatened. On the Sky Screen, she challenges Xiao Yi despite his Gold Rank cultivation and promises to stop him even at the cost of her life 36.

Her courage coexists with anxiety about endangering those close to her. At the assessment shown on the fifth Sky Screen, she initially tries to leave rather than draw Shen Fei’s hostility toward Nie Li.
