Yong and Cynthia traveled through Alola, caught new Pokémon, and helped stop Guzzlord and Stakataka from threatening Ula'ula Island. After receiving Z-Rings and training in Z-Moves, they returned to Kanto, where Yong watched Qingcao defeat Erika’s Gloom in his first Gym battle.

• Yong caught Rockruff and Cynthia caught Jangmo-o in Poni Great Canyon, then they continued exploring Alola and trained their new partners.
• Yong and Cynthia reached Ula'ula Island as Guzzlord attacked, and Yong defeated and caught it with Swampert before capturing the calm Stakataka.
• Yong explained Stakataka’s gentle nature to Lusamine and the others, then traveled with Cynthia and Acerola to Mount Lanakila, where they searched unsuccessfully for Alolan Vulpix.
• Tapu Lele tested Yong with an attack, then gave Yong and Cynthia Z-Rings and Rock- and Water-type Z-Crystals in recognition of their help.
• Yong and Cynthia trained their Z-Moves, received an Alolan Sandshrew and Alolan Vulpix from Molayne, and sailed for Kalos before Yong flew to Kanto to see Qingcao.
• Yong asked Erika for help while Qingcao and Miyuki arrived at the Celadon Gym, where Qingcao formally challenged Erika for a Badge.
• Qingcao’s Golett ignored Gloom’s Stench, evaded Moonblast with Phantom Force, and knocked Gloom out with successive Fire Punches.
