Background / History

Shiganshina and Displacement

Armin grew close to Eren, Mikasa, and Yago through their childhood play in Shiganshina. He was targeted by older bullies; during one encounter, Eren confronted them, while Mikasa and Yago’s arrival frightened them away. Armin pointed out who had actually driven the bullies off when Eren claimed the credit 5.

During the fall of Shiganshina, the fleeing crowd swept Armin away as Eren and Mikasa ran toward Eren’s home. At the evacuation landing, he later spotted Carla returning with Yago and Lucia and alerted Eren. He escaped aboard the ferry and witnessed the loss of Wall Maria, but initially doubted whether he could join the Survey Corps with his friends 5 6 7.

His grandfather, his only remaining relative, died in the government’s Wall Maria Reclamation Battle. Afterward, Armin was taken into the shared household of Eren’s family and Yago’s family. The loss helped push him toward enrolling in the Training Corps 8.

Military Training

In 848, Armin enrolled alongside Eren, Mikasa, and Yago. Although physically the weakest of the four, he passed the interview. During Keith’s intimidation ritual, he answered through his nervousness that he had enlisted to contribute to humanity’s victory 8 9.

Training exposed his limited endurance, but he gradually improved. He also suffered a head injury after moving too quickly with Omni-Directional Mobility Gear and striking a rock, requiring treatment in the infirmary. Following the wilderness march and its encounters with thieves, he and Thomas reported to Keith as the exercise’s designated record keepers 10 17 25 30.

At the disbandment ceremony, Armin firmly chose the Survey Corps. Eren questioned the decision because of Armin’s excellent classroom grades, but Armin insisted that he did not want to remain a burden 41.

Battle of Trost

When Trost was breached, Armin’s hands shook so badly that he struggled to connect his gas canister. His class was subsequently trapped by three Titans while supporting the vanguard. A bearded Titan seized Armin, and Eren saved him at the cost of being swallowed himself. Armin and Mina retreated; Armin later saw Titans devouring Thomas and Ili’s bodies 43 50.

Believing himself responsible for his comrades’ deaths, Armin withdrew into despair and rejected Mina’s encouragement. At the supply station, Yago urged him to use his intelligence to find an escape. Armin devised a coordinated ambush against the Titans downstairs, allowing the survivors to clear the station and replenish their gas 48 50.

Appearance

Armin is a slightly built blond boy with delicate features 5 9 36.

Personality

Armin is timid and frequently doubts his usefulness. He hesitates over joining the Survey Corps, becomes nervous under Keith’s questioning, and fears that his weakness will endanger others. After Eren’s apparent death, this insecurity becomes severe self-blame, even though his classmates still trust his judgment 7 9 48 50.

He is also considerate and inclined to defuse conflict. At Trost after the evacuation, he apologizes to a Garrison soldier on his friends’ behalf. During training, he stays with Eren through repeated balance failures and suggests seeking advice from neighboring dormmates 7 14.

His quieter temperament does not exclude humor or determination. He joins Yago in joking about becoming a godfather to Eren and Mikasa’s future child, and later makes his own firm decision to pursue the dangerous Survey Corps 19 41.
