Personality

Erwin is composed, calculating, and willing to use leverage to secure valuable recruits. He confronts Bai Yu with evidence of stolen Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, then offers protection for the boy's companions in exchange for service. Rather than dismissing Bai Yu because of his age, he recognizes both his exceptional ability and his capacity for ruthlessness 9 10.

His strongest personal ambition is to prove that humans exist beyond the Walls. Bai Yu describes him as willing to sacrifice himself or others to uncover that truth. When Grisha Yeager's books finally confirm it, Erwin breaks his usual composure, laughing and crying with excitement 31 34.

Following Wall Maria's fall, Erwin locates Bai Yu among the refugees in Wall Rose. He presents parts of the stolen maneuvering gear Bai Yu previously used and pressures him to demonstrate his abilities 9.

Their agreement makes Bai Yu's recruitment conditional on killing three Titans within three minutes. In return, Erwin promises to overlook the theft, shelter Xiate at Survey Corps headquarters, and keep Bai Yu's companions out of the Wall Maria Retake Plan. Bai Yu kills the three Titans in ten seconds and destroys another with a thrown blade on his return 10.

Erwin places Bai Yu directly under his authority, requiring attendance on every expedition but permitting substantial freedom between missions. He also arranges early Training Corps admission for Xiate. Within days, he succeeds Keith Shadis as commander, despite Keith's objections to the children's ages 11 13.

Early Expeditions and the Support Squad

On the twenty-seventh expedition, Erwin assigns Bai Yu to the formation's foremost position and approves Levi's request to accompany him. Levi subsequently reports that Bai Yu killed all seven Titans they encountered and worked more efficiently than an entire squad 15 16.

Orders from above then send one hundred thousand displaced civilians on the Wall Maria Retake Plan. Erwin honors his promise to exclude Bai Yu's companions. When mounting Titan attacks scatter the civilians and overwhelm the soldiers, he declares the operation a failure and orders the Survey Corps to retreat 17.

He later permits Xiate and Ming to join Bai Yu's Support Squad. During the thirty-fifth expedition, its rapid responses to distress signals reinforce his confidence in recruiting Bai Yu. Nevertheless, increasing Titan density and casualties near Wall Maria force another withdrawal before the Scouts reach Shiganshina 17 21 23.

Discovering the Outside World

Bai Yu's theory that Titans are transformed humans gives Erwin a new investigative lead. The suggestion that Grisha Yeager entered the Walls from outside prompts him to question Carla and Eren, then organize a determined thirty-sixth expedition toward Shiganshina 31.

Carrying a key, Erwin tells Levi that the expedition could uncover information unavailable from dozens of previous missions. The Scouts advance at night, reach Shiganshina, and clear its remaining Titans. Bai Yu guides Erwin and Levi to Grisha's former home, where they discover three books hidden beneath a drawer's false bottom 32 33.

Because memory alteration could erase their discoveries, he plans a secret operation involving Levi's and Bai Yu's squads. He entrusts the recovered books to Bai Yu as a safeguard, then reveals the truth to a small group of trusted soldiers and wins their support for overthrowing the Royal Government 35 36.

Erwin brings Commander Pixis into the conspiracy. Their discussions also raise the possibility that Eren unknowingly inherited Grisha's Attack Titan. Following the proposed interrogation of nobles, Erwin obtains testimony identifying the Reiss family as the true royal family 37 38 45.

Erwin assigns Bai Yu to monitor Eren and the 104th Cadet Corps while the Survey Corps concentrates on the Founding Titan and the government.
