Background / History

Kureo and his wife, Madoi, were both CCG investigators. Despite their exhausting work, they regularly returned home to spend time with their daughter, Akira. Kureo remembers family meals, shared laughter, and Akira helping with household chores as the happiest period of his life 30.

Their family life ended during the first operation against Owl. Madoi stayed behind to cover the others, asking Kureo to take care of Akira despite his pleas that she retreat. Her death left him consumed by grief and convinced that his own weakness had forced her sacrifice 30. Huiqi initially knows the circumstances through old rumors, including an account that Madoi was the squad’s strongest investigator and its only Associate Special Class member 1.

Years later, Kureo remains determined to kill the One-Eyed Owl. He repeatedly asks whether Huiqi can defeat it and tries to arrange for Huiqi to care for Akira if he dies 19 30.

Personality

Kureo is eccentric, provocative, and obsessively devoted to hunting ghouls. Amon initially sees him as someone who can set aside virtually everything else for an investigation. He treats grave digging as entertainment and taunts Hinami Fueguchi with the prospect of a “family reunion” while carrying a Quinque whose scent she recognizes as her father’s 29 41 50.

His fixation on Owl is rooted in survivor’s guilt. When recalling Madoi’s death, he condemns himself as weak, useless, and cowardly, insisting that he will keep working until he can take revenge. Even after acknowledging that he cannot defeat Owl, he vows to tear away a piece of its flesh 30.

Around Akira, his manner changes dramatically. He becomes nervous, accommodating, and eager to comfort her, though his long absorption in work has left him unfamiliar with how much she has matured. His concern for her eventually leads him to decline the Ward 10 extermination operation 37 38.

Quinque Combat

Kureo is a capable investigator whose combat performance sometimes exceeds Huiqi’s initial assessment of him as roughly Rank 1 in strength 1 15.

• Kakuja capture: Together with Yukinori Shinohara, he captures a heavily defended koukaku kakuja ghoul. The Research Department develops its kagune into armor 15.
• Protecting his junior: Amon credits Kureo with saving him several times during their missions 29.
• Assessment against Yamori: Huiqi believes Kureo is strong enough to defeat Yamori, but a broken Quinque allows the ghoul to escape 22.
• Limit against Owl: Huiqi judges that Kureo has no realistic chance against the One-Eyed Owl and would survive, at best, only a few exchanges 30.

Kureo frequently follows instincts before obtaining firm evidence. Both Huiqi and Amon recognize that these instincts have produced genuine results 19 20.
