Background / History

Before crossing into this world, Huiqi handled illicit work under the nickname Thug. Underworld figures knew him by that name, and even the government occasionally used his services for matters it could not openly handle 10.

By the opening chapter, he works for the CCG and calmly accepts a court verdict without objection. When preparing for the dangerous Ward 24 mission, he attempts to write a will but leaves it blank, reflecting that he has always been alone 1.

He has known Akihiro Kano for two years by the time he returns from Ward 24. Their acquaintance began when Huiqi helped Kano with a problem in logistics, leading to continued communication 8.

Appearance

• Wears a white work uniform and later a CCG coat 1 30.
• Carries his long-bladed Quinque in a transforming briefcase and conceals smaller Quinque daggers inside his clothing 10 18 27.

Personality

Huiqi initially prefers an undemanding working life and tells Kishou Arima that he has avoided promotion because he likes to slack off. Nevertheless, he accepts dangerous system missions for their rewards and calculates how to use stronger allies to survive them. He frequently hides suspicion or hostility behind an easy smile, though Eto Yoshimura recognizes the falseness of that manner 2 3 12.

His conduct in combat is ruthless and pragmatic. He targets vulnerable organs, exploits opponents’ mistakes, and even uses Kawashima’s corpse as a shield during the Ward 24 battle. Outside combat, he can be courteous and helpful, a contrast that surprises Misaki Aika 7 10 13 21.

Kawashima’s death changes his priorities: he blames his weakness both for losing his partner and for becoming a pawn of Arima and Eto. Despite his brutality toward enemies, he remains affected by bereaved families and questions whether ghoul–human conflict can be solved at its source 12 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Ward 24 Survival

Huiqi accepts the rear-guard mission for its system reward and descends underground with Arima and Kawashima. After fighting ravenous ghouls and narrowly escaping a powerful rinkaku attacker, he becomes involved in a kakuja battle in which Kawashima dies. Arima then knocks Huiqi unconscious and leaves his identification card with Eto as collateral for their plan to create the One-Eyed King and oppose the Washuu 1 3 5 7 8.

He returns to the CCG hospital with enhanced physical potential and a Rank 2 promotion. Eto’s subsequent warning against fleeing, followed by his meeting with Kawashima’s widow, pushes him to pursue enough strength to escape their control 8 12.

Rise to Special Class

Huiqi takes increasingly frequent missions and commissions a versatile combination Quinque. Months of work raise his assessment through Rank 1 and Associate Special Class to Special Class, after which he prepares to confront Eto and Arima. His reputation as the Executioner becomes established enough that Akira recognizes the name from her academy classes 16 18.

Ward 20 and Kano’s Experiments

While investigating the Aquarium attack and the Binge Eater, Huiqi follows Rize and Kaneki toward a construction site. He attacks a clown watching from a rooftop, then subdues Rize with throwing knives that strike her kakuhou and pin her rinkaku 20 23 24 25.

He subsequently monitors Kaneki’s recovery from Kano’s transplant experiment and investigates Rize’s possible connection to the Washuu. Later visits to Kano’s laboratory reveal failed subjects and Rize’s confinement in a cultivation tank, where Kano extracts rc-cell concentrate from her kakuhou 26 44.

Rooftop Battle with Eto

After confronting Sen Takatsuki at her book signing, Huiqi fights her on an abandoned building’s rooftop. He switches to Amber’s Wail after another blade shatters, uses its rc suppressant against her kakuja, and eventually severs the transformed head. Neither combatant secures a decisive victory: Eto escapes after biting flesh from his shoulder, while Huiqi collapses with severe wounds and exhaustion 27 28.

During recovery, Huiqi identifies the One-Eyed Owl to Shinohara but lies to Mado to discourage a revenge attempt. After discharge, he collects newly developed Quinques 29 30 31.

Academy Raid and Aogiri Counterattack

Huiqi is dispatched to the besieged CCG Academy in Ward 5, arriving after killing ghoul reinforcements on the way. During the later Ward 10 counterattack, he holds off Ward 24–style attackers alone and rescues Shinohara 31 32 33 35.

His effort to defeat Noro with repeated cuts and electricity is followed by Noro’s transformation into a giant creature that devours both investigators and ghouls. The aftermath prompts Huiqi to question the origins of ghouls and whether extermination can address the underlying conflict 35 36.

Later Ward 20 Investigations

After an accidental encounter with Eto while his Quinque is undergoing maintenance, Huiqi fights her barehanded and escapes to retrieve a replacement weapon 40 41.

He later investigates a student’s report about Fuyuko Yasui, discovers a funeral display made from human remains, and kills the three ghouls abusing her. By Chapter 49, his files include Demon Ape, Black Dog, Kaneki, and the Clowns, while Kano’s next experiments make continued observation of Kaneki his priority 46 47 49.
