Background / History
CCG Career and Partnership with Huiqi
Kano began as an ordinary CCG researcher with little clearance, performing low-level research under considerable pressure. He wanted to uncover unknown biological mechanisms and expand medical knowledge, but repeatedly struggled against the limits of his position 44.
He met Huiqi through logistics when Huiqi helped him resolve a problem. By his first appearance, they had known each other for two years. Kano proposed that similarities between human and ghoul organs might permit transplantation, and Huiqi encouraged him to test the hypothesis 8.
After resigning from the CCG, Kano continued experimenting privately. Early kakuhou transplants caused immediate death through rejection; a later subject survived but became a severely abnormal creature. When Aogiri Tree targeted him, he asked Huiqi to protect him privately at his hospital 17.
Rize’s Capture and Kaneki’s Transformation
Kano intervened before Huiqi could kill Rize Kamishiro, requesting her as experimental material. He believed her Washuu lineage might provide a more stable kakuhou than his previous donors, although he had never tested that assumption. Their existing arrangement exchanged Huiqi’s ghoul materials for Kano’s weapon upgrades 25.
At his private hospital, Kano transplanted Rize’s kakuhou into Ken Kaneki. When Huiqi proposed killing the resulting half-ghoul, Kano physically stopped him and argued that Kaneki’s unusually stable condition made him indispensable to further research. Kaneki’s subsequent inability to eat ordinary food confirmed the transformation 25 26.
Exposure of the Underground Laboratory
Kaneki’s repeated hospital visits prompted Kano to plan a relocation. Meanwhile, investigators uncovered suspicious organ transplants and connected them to Kaneki’s disappearance. Kano ordered Huiqi to kill Madam A, who cared for his test subjects, but she disclosed his location before Huiqi silenced her 79.
The CCG, Kaneki’s group, and Aogiri Tree converged on the underground laboratory. Kano gave Huiqi a USB drive containing his experimental data so that another laboratory could be established if he was lost. During Kaneki’s confrontation with him, Kano praised his development and claimed that Yoshimura was behind Aogiri Tree 81 82 83.
The operation ended in failure after Yomo removed Rize. Kano disappeared, and the CCG circulated wanted notices exposing his human experiments to public condemnation 83 86.
Aogiri Tree and the Owl Project
Kano later worked within Aogiri Tree, where Eto Yoshimura demanded another subject comparable to Kaneki. Without the Matriarch, Rize, he believed such a result would depend on luck 105.
For the Owl Project, he used Yoshimura Kuzen as the donor and captured CCG investigators as recipients. He replaced his earlier emotion-suppression approach with repeated torture intended to reproduce the circumstances that had accelerated Kaneki’s development. Although Seidou Takizawa and Kōtarō Amon survived, Kano judged Amon’s strong will an obstacle and eventually ordered his disposal 110 121.
Return to Huiqi’s Research Program
Kano resumed covert cooperation with Huiqi at Rushima Island. He also helped stage a confrontation involving Rize’s father, 𩾇, and a living kakuhou from Rize’s body as part of a plan to deceive V 138 139.
After Aogiri Tree’s destruction, Kano worked in a CCG-provided laboratory. Using Rize’s living cells, he produced half-ghoul investigators that Souta Furuta called the new QS squad. Their replicated kakuhou were ready for deployment before the attack on Black Goat 144 148.
When Dragon formed, Huiqi revealed that he and Kano had deceived Furuta: Rize was alive, and the artificial kakuhou were only half-finished products. Kano then joined Huiqi and Jin Toka to begin the plan’s next phase 150.
Personality
Kano is driven by discovery and treats experimental breakthroughs as achievements even when the results are grotesque or unstable. He considered an early malformed transplant survivor a major success and later watched an RC-induced mutation with visible excitement 17 45.
His scientific enthusiasm is accompanied by profound disregard for his subjects’ suffering. He smiles while Rize recovers consciousness from painful extraction, repeatedly tortures captured investigators, and orders failed subjects discarded. When Kaneki calls him a madman, Kano frames their conflict as a difference in perspective rather than acknowledging the harm he caused 45 83 110 121.
He is more accommodating toward Huiqi, expressing gratitude for their early partnership and offering assistance. That cooperation is also pragmatic: he pleads to preserve valuable subjects and places his research data in Huiqi’s custody as a safeguard 25 44 82.
Abilities & Skills
Kakuhou Transplantation
Kano can implant ghoul organs into human recipients, creating artificial half-ghouls. Kaneki’s successful integration provides data that he believes can be used to repeat the procedure 25 26.
- Uses RC suppressants to reduce rejection during postoperative treatment 25.
- Monitors recipients for unstable RC balance, even after they resume life outside the hospital 44.
- Success remains inconsistent; donor quality and recipient compatibility limit reproducibility 25 105 110.
RC-Cell Research
Kano’s experiments establish that humans and ghouls both contain RC cells, with ghouls possessing much higher concentrations. He proposes—but does not confirm—that ghouls may have evolved from humans 44.
- Extracts concentrated RC-cell fluid from Rize’s kakuhou 44 45.
- Induces extreme hunger, cannibalism, and bodily mutation by injecting concentrated RC cells into a ghoul 45.
- Attributes the resulting monster’s one-minute lifespan to the absence of a core 45.
- His stored research identifies three prerequisites for a beyond-normal kagune monster: a one-eyed ghoul, extensive cannibalism, and mental instability. Even together, these conditions only make success barely possible 106.
Quinque Modification
Kano upgrades Huiqi’s weapons in exchange for ghoul materials. His modified throwing-knife Quinques help incapacitate Rize; an injured ghoul’s escape despite those weapons prompts him to suspect unusual biological resilience 25.
Experimental Conditioning
Kano alters his methods according to the results of earlier subjects rather than relying on surgery alone 110.
- Uses an emotion-erasure approach on the Yasuhisa sisters 110.
- Later adopts severe, repeated torture to imitate Kaneki’s developmental experience 110.
- Distinguishes surgical survival from experimental success: Amon survives transplantation but is still classified as a failure 110.
Research and Experimental Subjects
| Subject / Project | Chapter | Result and Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Early human transplant trials | 17 | Initial recipients die from rejection; a later recipient survives in a severely abnormal state. |
| Ken Kaneki | 25 26 83 | Receives Rize’s kakuhou and becomes an artificial one-eyed ghoul. Kano repeatedly regards him as his finest creation. |
| Concentrated RC-cell ghoul experiment | 45 | A ghoul consumes three others and becomes a tooth-covered kagune mass, then dies after one minute. Kano temporarily returns his focus to human experiments. |
| Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa | 55 70 | Two successful recipients with exceptionally strong integration. Kano agrees to implant trackers at Huiqi’s request. |
| Souta Furuta | 70 | Successfully receives a transplant from Rize and is identified as the fourth successful experimental subject. |
| Owl Project | 110 121 | Uses Kuzen as donor. Only Takizawa and Amon succeed among sixty-three living subjects; Kano later orders Amon discarded. |
| New QS squad and replicated kakuhou | 144 148 150 | Produces numerous half-ghoul investigators from Rize’s living cells. Their kakuhou are described as roughly half as pure as Kaneki’s and are later revealed to be half-finished products. |
Equipment / Facilities
- Private hospital — Site of Kaneki’s surgery and postoperative observation; nurses later turn Kaneki away while Kano prepares to relocate 25 26 79.
- Underground laboratory — Located beneath a villa formerly owned by Yasuhisa Nanao. Its connected passages contain cultivation chambers, failed subjects, and biological walls constructed from RC cells 44 81 83.
- Cultivation tanks and extraction machinery — Keep experimental subjects contained and allow concentrated RC fluid to be harvested from Rize 44 45.
- Population database — Displays portraits covering most of Tokyo’s population alongside notes on physical constitution 44.
- Experimental-data USB drive — Entrusted to Huiqi to preserve the research and enable a replacement laboratory 82 106.
- CCG-provided laboratory — Houses the later production of Rize-derived half-ghoul investigators and artificial kakuhou 144 148.
Relationships
- Huiqi — Long-standing research partner, material supplier, and protector. Their collaboration eventually includes deceiving Furuta and preparing the phase following Dragon’s formation 8 17 25 150.
- Ken Kaneki — Patient and prized experimental subject. Kano protects him for his research value; Kaneki blames Kano for destroying his former life 25 83.
