Background / History

Arrival at Anteiku

Hinami had never attended school and wanted to learn to read. Before coming to Anteiku, her life had largely revolved around her parents. Her mother, Ryouko, sought the café’s help because she could not hunt for herself 9 13 16.

Yoshimura encouraged Louis to befriend her, but their first meeting left her too frightened to speak. After Kaneki helped her understand friendship, she visited Louis’s room and asked to become his friend. His adventure and romance stories helped them grow comfortable with each other; she also practiced writing and asked about the meaning of “happily ever after” 9 12 13.

Her Father’s Death and the First Trap

As her father’s absence continued, Hinami repeatedly cried and asked to see him. Louis tried to cheer her up with a miniature ice figure of herself, and she asked him to make one of her father as well 16 21.

During an outing with Ryouko, Hinami recognized her father’s scent and followed it into an alley. The scent came from Kureo Mado’s case: he possessed a quinque made from her father’s kagune. Ryouko held off the investigators so Hinami could escape toward Anteiku, where Kaneki helped protect her. Louis intervened before Mado could kill Ryouko 22 24 28.

Because the investigators had seen both their faces, Yoshimura planned to relocate Hinami and Ryouko to Ward 24. Hinami withdrew into her room while grieving. Anticipating the dangers of their proposed move, Louis trained her to awaken her kagune 27 29 33.

Recovering Her Father’s Remains

The investigators later used her father’s remains as bait, carrying packages near Anteiku. Hinami detected his scent before the others did and became increasingly distressed. Despite promising her mother not to leave, she slipped away and confronted Amon beside the river 35.

Hinami knocked Amon back with her four kagune and recovered the package, but Louis stopped her from opening it. When four investigators surrounded them, she fought alongside him until Touka, Kaneki, and Nishiki arrived. Her lack of experience nearly allowed Mado to strike her, forcing Louis to intervene 35 36 37.

After the battle, the group buried her father in the suburbs and erected a simple gravestone. Hinami and Ryouko gradually recovered emotionally. The suspension of CCG searches allowed them to remain in Ward 20, and Hinami resumed outings in disguise under Yomo’s protection 41 42.

Aogiri Tree Attack and Kaneki’s Rescue

Renewed investigator deployments prompted Ryouko and Koma to search for accommodation in Ward 24, leaving Hinami at Anteiku. When Ayato and Yamori’s group arrived, Louis sent her upstairs for safety. She called Yoshimura for help and then used her kagune to knock back Nico’s pursuing attack, protecting Louis 46 48.

Following Kaneki’s abduction, Hinami volunteered to help rescue him because he had always looked after her. She was assigned to Yoshimura’s support team alongside Irimi, Koma, and Ryouko 49 50.

Personality

Hinami is initially shy and wary of Louis, avoiding eye contact and struggling to speak to him. Once reassured, she becomes eager to make friends. She loves stories and shows particular interest in what happens to romantic couples after their adventures 9 13.

Her attachment to her family makes her father’s absence and death especially painful. Grief leads her to isolate herself and eventually follow his scent despite warnings. She also becomes determined to help the people who care for her: she protects Louis during Nico’s attack and volunteers for Kaneki’s rescue 21 29 35 48 49.

Hybrid Kagune

Hinami inherits both parents’ kagune, possessing rinkaku and koukaku supported by two kakuhou. Her first awakening produces four enormous appendages 13 33.
