Background / History

According to Louis’s account, Nishiki’s older sister fell in love with a human man who reported her to the CCG after discovering she was a ghoul. Nishiki witnessed her death while the investigators hunted her down 7.

Nishiki later fell in love with the human Kimi Nishino. When she discovered his identity, he initially intended to kill her, but stopped after realizing that she genuinely loved him: even when he bit her, she did not resist. Kimi kept his identity secret, and Nishiki refrained from harming her even while starving 7.

Kimi credits Nishiki with saving her after the deaths of her father and younger brother left her nearly unwilling to live. Their relationship became his strongest reason to endure injury and resist hunger 16 17.

Personality

Nishiki is abrasive, proud, and openly hostile during his early encounters. He kills the weaker ghoul Kazuo, threatens Kaneki, and attempts to kill Louis because the human has seen his face. He initially dismisses Anteiku’s members as bystanders with no right to criticize him 3.

His devotion to Kimi exposes a markedly vulnerable side. After the church battle, he shields her from Touka and repeatedly begs for her life, offering to leave both Ward 20 and Tokyo. He admits that he would accept even betrayal from Kimi rather than lose her 20.

Nishiki struggles to express gratitude directly, but acts on his debts. He recognizes Louis’s improved strength instead of thanking him outright, answers an emergency request despite fearing the investigators, and eventually accepts Kaneki as a companion despite their violent history 21 35 49.

Early Conflict with Kaneki

• Nishiki kills Kazuo and nearly crushes Kaneki’s head before Louis intervenes. After fighting Louis, he is overwhelmed by Touka and flees with flesh taken from a nearby human corpse 3.
• He later fights Kaneki when Kaneki protects Hide. The confrontation leaves Kaneki and Hide bloodied; Nishiki is later revealed to have suffered a nearly fatal hole punched through his abdomen 6 16 49.

Kimi’s Rescue and Joining Anteiku

• Kaneki finds Nishiki weakened and being beaten by several ghouls. He drives the attackers away and takes Nishiki home 16.
• Despite needing flesh to recover, Nishiki accompanies Kaneki to rescue Kimi from Tsukiyama. Tsukiyama easily throws him aside; later, Louis hurls him back into the fight to create an opening, and Tsukiyama impales him 17 18 19.
• After Touka defeats Tsukiyama, Nishiki shields Kimi and pleads until Touka relents. He subsequently joins Anteiku for a reliable food supply 20 21.

Riverside Battle

• Louis calls Nishiki when Hinami confronts investigators using her father’s remains as bait. Nishiki leaves Kimi to help, explicitly acknowledging his obligation to repay the others 35.
• Assigned to Yu Fura, he is defeated and left near death. Louis intervenes before the investigator delivers a final blow, then helps Nishiki afterward 37 38 39 41.

Kaneki Rescue Preparations

• Nishiki protests Yoshimura’s warning that they may never see the abducted Kaneki again and volunteers for the dangerous rescue. He prepares a scheduled message to Kimi that Louis recognizes as effectively a last letter 49.
• When Tsukiyama arrives to join the operation, Nishiki and Touka react warily and question how he survived the church battle 50.
