Background / History

Kaneki is a Kamii University student and Hideyoshi Nagachika’s close friend. Louis first sees him at Anteiku with his face buried in a book, periodically looking toward Rize Kamishiro and blushing 1 21.

Louis attempts to divert Rize from Kaneki, believing this will prevent his transformation. Several months later, he nevertheless finds Kaneki suffering from ghoul hunger. Kaneki later explains that he lost consciousness around his transformation and awakened in Dr. Kano’s private hospital; Kano has not exposed his ghoul identity, leaving Kaneki uncertain about what the doctor knows 3 6 34.

After Louis saves him from Nishiki Nishio and Touka intervenes, Yoshimura brings Kaneki to Anteiku. Kaneki initially refuses human flesh because he believes eating it will mean abandoning his humanity. Yoshimura offers him ordinary coffee and a supply of human jerky, explaining that coffee is something ghouls can enjoy but cannot live on alone 3 4.

Following another confrontation with Nishiki, Kaneki fears that remaining close to Hide will endanger his friend. Yoshimura tells him that he belongs to both the human and ghoul worlds and invites him to work at Anteiku. Kaneki and Louis begin serving customers while learning to make coffee 6 7.

Personality

Kaneki is thoughtful, compassionate, and deeply attached to his human identity. His first response to ghoul hunger is horror rather than acceptance: even while starving, he refuses human flesh and insists that he is human. He later considers distancing himself from Hide because he does not want to hurt his friends 4 7.

He helps people who have harmed him. Despite Nishiki’s earlier attacks, Kaneki wants to assist him when other ghouls leave him badly injured. He then seeks food for Nishiki and accepts Tsukiyama’s challenge to rescue Kimi, blaming himself because Tsukiyama is pursuing him 16 17 18.

Kaneki frequently broods over his perceived failures. After the attack on Ryouko and Hinami, Louis anticipates his guilt and reminds him that protecting Hinami was a meaningful contribution. Kaneki is also cautious about taking sides: he wants to understand the ghoul world firsthand before deciding how to respond to future conflicts with investigators 28 32.

His restraint is also a source of strength. Louis praises his ability to remain clearheaded while starving and protect Hide, identifying willpower as the quality that could help him master his dangerous power 43.

Tsukiyama’s Pursuit

Tsukiyama becomes fascinated by Kaneki’s unique scent and persuades him to leave Anteiku with him. Kaneki is subsequently returned unconscious by Tsukiyama family servants, prompting the staff to restrict their contact 13 14.

After Kaneki helps the injured Nishiki, Tsukiyama abducts Kimi and demands a midnight meeting at a church. His plan is to make Kaneki eat Kimi while he eats Kaneki. Kaneki and Nishiki attempt the rescue but are easily overwhelmed; Touka and Louis intervene 17 18.

Conflict with the CCG

During the attack on Ryouko and Hinami, Kaneki protects Hinami but later berates himself for not doing more. Louis reminds him that this allowed Louis to focus on saving Ryouko 28.

Kaneki later joins the confrontation triggered by the investigators’ use of Hinami’s father’s remains as bait. Assigned to fight Amon, he initially refuses to use his kagune, then draws on Rize’s strength. Amon is defeated and spared, but Kaneki loses control and attacks Touka before she and Louis knock him unconscious 35 37 39 41.

Investigation of His Transformation

Kaneki privately tells Louis about Dr. Kano and the hospital where he awakened. They agree to investigate the cause of his transformation once the immediate danger subsides. At Itori’s bar, Kaneki seeks information about Rize but learns only that she previously lived in Ward 11 34 43.

Aogiri Tree Abduction

Banjō visits Anteiku seeking Rize and mistakes Kaneki’s scent for evidence that he is romantically involved with her. Ayato, Yamori, and Nico arrive soon afterward. Yamori seizes Kaneki, overpowers Touka’s attempt to intervene, and repeatedly injures him 46 47.

Anteiku learns that Aogiri Tree has taken Kaneki and prepares a rescue despite the danger. Uta, Yomo, Tsukiyama, and Nico are assigned to search deep inside the organization’s shopping-mall base; Louis, Touka, and Nishiki search the perimeter, while Yoshimura leads the support team. The rescue remains pending at the end of the provided chapters 49 50.
