Background / History
Misato grew up resenting her father’s devotion to research and his neglect of their family. Although others considered him considerate, she regarded his absorption in his work as an escape from reality. She supported her mother’s decision to divorce him, but his death while saving her during Second Impact left her uncertain whether she loved or hated him 47.
Dr. Katsuragi led the expedition involved in Second Impact, and Misato was the only survivor among those directly involved. The narrative identifies the expedition, the United Nations, and SEELE as participants in the disaster, with SEELE orchestrating its eventual outcome 32.
Misato joined NERV to defeat the Angels she believed responsible for Second Impact. She eventually admits that avenging her father is also an attempt to free herself from his hold over her. Huang Zhetian separately recognizes that the people she risks her life defending include those responsible for her father’s death and resolves to save her 18 47.
Investigating NERV
Misato later tells Kaji that she was frightened by her attraction to a man who resembled her father. She describes joining NERV as another attempt to escape her father’s influence, despite the organization’s connection to him, and admits that revenge allowed her to avoid confronting her own feelings 60.
Her suspicions of NERV deepen when Kaji exposes his multiple intelligence affiliations and shows her the crucified white giant beneath headquarters, identifying it to her as Adam. Misato recognizes a connection to Second Impact and realizes that Gendo and Ritsuko have concealed fundamental information from her 61.
Kaji subsequently reveals that the Marduk Institute does not exist and directs her toward code 707, Shinji’s school. Her investigation establishes that everyone in his class is a pilot candidate. Shinji’s absorption into Unit-01 at a 400% synchronization rate makes her increasingly desperate to understand the Evas, the underground giant, and the Human Instrumentality Project 69 81.
After Kaji is implicated in an intelligence incident, Misato surrenders her pistol and submits to questioning because of their personal history. She later discovers his recorded message at home and continues examining his recordings and memory card. Her investigation includes reports that seven countries are constructing Evas, for which she enlists Hyuga’s assistance 98 100 104.
Ritsuko eventually takes Misato and Shinji into NERV’s restricted laboratory. There, Misato hears Ritsuko’s account of Rei’s origins, the soulless vessels used by the Dummy System, and the supposed replacement of Huang Zhetian with a clone. She witnesses Ritsuko destroy the spare Rei vessels and is left struggling with the revelations. Ritsuko later identifies Kaworu as the final Angel and answers further questions about Adam 119 126.
Original Storyline’s Final Battle and Renewed Life
During the Defense Force assault on NERV, Misato helps move Shinji toward Unit-01. Huang Zhetian reveals that he is alive and confirms that Kaji has also survived. Misato tells Shinji that the Mass Production Evas must be destroyed to prevent Third Impact and urges him to fight for himself rather than surrender to despair 131.
She reunites with Kaji, initially mistaking his Defense Force uniform for evidence that he is an enemy. Before sending Shinji onward, she kisses his forehead, explicitly calls it a family farewell, and gives him the cross necklace inherited from her father. She then remains with the wounded Kaji, determined not to lose her chance to be with him again 133.
A subsequent side story depicts Misato living an ordinary working life without her old memories. Kaji moves in across from her and offers assistance with her commute and workplace harassment. She wears a blue ring that she believes came from a tavern prize draw, while Kaji wears a matching red one and retains memories of her former self 140.
Rebuild-Era Storyline
In the later storyline set in 2015, Misato welcomes Huang Zhetian to Tokyo-3 as his direct supervisor and takes him into her home before Shinji’s arrival. She explicitly welcomes him as family, and they agree to share cleaning duties 145 146.
This storyline gives a different account of Second Impact: four Adams were discovered in Antarctica, and the resulting ritual devastated marine life. Dr. Katsuragi was a pioneering figure in the Human Instrumentality Project and proposed a hypothesis concerning Lilith’s Eva in Minus Space. Misato survived because he placed her in an emergency capsule, and reminders of the disaster remain painful enough that Kaji says she would avoid visiting the restored blue sea 168.
Misato selects Huang Zhetian to test-pilot Unit-03 while the Vatican Treaty requires his Special Unit to remain frozen. She survives the destruction of the Matsushiro test site but breaks down upon learning that Unit-01 destroyed Unit-03 as an Angel and that Huang Zhetian’s survival is unknown 172 174.
When Third Impact resumes through Mark.06’s contact with Lilith, Kaji arranges the evacuation of survivors aboard the Wunder and entrusts Misato and Ritsuko with their protection. He later insists that WILLE must seek ways to save individuals as well as the wider population, a principle Misato accepts 183 188.
Kaji subsequently dies, and Huang Zhetian brings back his remains. Misato assumes the burden of leading WILLE against Gendo’s NERV while separated from the son she had with Kaji. She later admits that she wanted to follow Kaji in death and leave leadership to Huang Zhetian, but could not abandon her responsibilities 199 203 230 231.
Final Battle and Renewed World
Before the final battle, Misato and Huang Zhetian authorize Kredit’s independent operation and release the restraints on the two Eva units. Misato receives information about her son and looks at a photograph of him with Shinji and Huang Zhetian, while reflecting on her own responsibility for encouraging Shinji during Near Third Impact 230 231.
During Fourth Impact, Shinji offers to shoulder half her burden and stop Gendo. When Sakura Suzuhara fires at him to prevent another Eva deployment, Misato shields him and is shot in the abdomen. She publicly accepts responsibility for having allowed him to pilot and for his actions under her command, then entrusts him with the mission. After a final embrace, she sends him away with Mari and Asuka aboard Unit-08 while Sakura treats her wound 235.
In the final renewed world, Misato again works under Gendo, now addressed as company president rather than commander. She tells him that she and Kaji have been together for fourteen years and have a son. Kaji runs a small bar opened for him by Huang Zhetian and continues tending his melon patch, giving Misato a family life she says she once could not have imagined 243.
Appearance
- Work clothing: Wears a formal NERV uniform; her promotion to major is recognizable from the two stripes on her collar insignia 44.
- Casual clothing: Changes into a tank top and shorts at home, where she becomes noticeably more relaxed 45.
- Distinctive accessory: Wears a silvery-white cross at her chest 47.
- Formal outfits: Discusses a pink suit and blue dress previously worn to weddings, and wears a low-cut evening dress during an outing with Kaji and Ritsuko 59 60.
- Matsushiro travel uniform: Wears loose, pale-yellow NERV uniform trousers and a small red felt hat 70.
- Hair: Has long hair, which she pins up while working 170.
- WILLE-era appearance: Wears a cap and sunglasses that make her expression difficult for Shinji to read. After fourteen years, fine wrinkles line her eyes; her sunglasses fall away when she is shot protecting him 200 208 235.
Personality
Misato is warm, teasing, and attentive to the pilots’ emotional needs. She comforts Shinji when he breaks down under the burden of piloting, acknowledges the adults’ mistakes, and recognizes his longing for his father’s approval. Her encouragement can quickly turn playful: immediately after consoling him, she asks him to make breakfast 3.
Her relaxed home life contrasts sharply with her command responsibilities. She drinks beer enthusiastically, leaves clothes and cans scattered around, and relies on the pilots for cooking and cleaning. Nevertheless, she treasures the companionship they bring to her apartment, especially the sight of Shinji becoming less isolated 11 30 39 44 48.
Misato shares Shinji’s loneliness and difficulty confronting painful truths. Her promotion does not make her straightforwardly happy, and she initially avoids explaining why she joined NERV. She later speaks openly about her father, revealing the grief and revenge beneath her professional commitment 3 44 45 47.
She can become severe when she believes a pilot has crossed a moral boundary. After Huang Zhetian apparently kills Mana and Musashi, she slaps him and suspends him from piloting. Her subsequent shame over striking him makes her unable to meet his eyes until Kaji’s teasing eases the tension 38 39.
Her protectiveness can also become anger toward colleagues who appear indifferent to the children’s suffering. When Shinji dissolves into Unit-01’s LCL, she slaps Ritsuko and demands that she take responsibility. Privately, she admits to Kaji that she has barely been eating or sleeping 81.
Misato recognizes selfishness within her guardianship: she tells Shinji that she has placed her dreams and hopes upon him, while also developing genuine maternal concern for him and the other pilots. Her difficulty communicating with children does not diminish her conviction that living together creates a responsibility to care for one another 70 74 154.
As a commander, she favors human judgment, adaptability, and determination over surrendering to unfavorable calculations. Her argument with Ritsuko during the Eighth Angel attack makes this distinction explicit: Misato insists on creating a miracle through human will rather than treating MAGI’s failure probability as decisive 168.
Kaji’s death and the burden of WILLE’s command make her markedly colder, more reserved, and more decisive. Her distance from Shinji is nevertheless tied to unresolved guilt, regret over encouraging his earlier actions, and fear that he will again sacrifice himself or act impulsively. Huang Zhetian criticizes her willingness to accommodate the crew’s hostility rather than openly defend him 200 211 224 231.
Her final reconciliation with Shinji restores much of her earlier warmth. By shielding him from Sakura’s bullet and openly taking responsibility for his deployment, she replaces avoidance with an explicit commitment to support the person he has become 235.
Abilities & Skills
Tactical Command
Misato coordinates Eva deployments and adapts plans to the units’ capabilities 8 15.
- Assigns Huang Zhetian’s Special Unit to occupy the Fish Angel while Unit-02 seeks its core, accounting for the Special Unit’s built-in Air-Sea Equipment 8.
- Organizes a synchronized attack requiring Huang Zhetian and Asuka to destroy the Music Angel’s two cores simultaneously within a song’s rhythm 15.
- Develops the Space Angel interception plan around the Evas’ A.T. Fields, using MAGI’s projected impact zone and her intuition to determine deployment positions 46 47.
- Limit: Her authority does not let her override every decision. At the volcano, Commander Ikari’s absence prevents her from authorizing changes to the N² bombing operation 25.
- Orders a cautious approach to the Night Angel and attempts to draw it away from Tokyo-3. After Shinji and Huang Zhetian are swallowed, she orders Rei and Asuka to retreat rather than lose the remaining units 63.
- Devises Operation Yashima against Ramiel, assembling Japan’s electrical power and requisitioning the Strategic Self-Defense Force’s experimental high-output positron weapon. She assigns Unit-01 and the Special Unit separate firing positions, with Unit-00 defending Shinji and Huang Zhetian providing the surprise finishing shot 160 161 162.
- Directs the Rebuild-era Eighth Angel interception despite a calculated failure probability above 99%, then creates a revised route for Unit-01 when the Angel changes its trajectory 168.
- Commands the Wunder in high-risk operations, including using the ship as bait to draw out enemies and demonstrate its god-slaying capabilities 209.
- Coordinates the Wunder’s final sortie against NERV and the Human Instrumentality Project 230 231.
Emergency Management
Misato exercises NERV’s authority over military cooperation, restricted sites, and civilian evacuation 5 22 46.
- Secures an agreement transferring supreme operational command to NERV during an emergency, then invokes it during the Fish Angel attack 5 7.
- Places the Angel Embryo research site under NERV control, prohibits entry and exit, and classifies the preceding six hours 22.
- Issues special order D-17 to evacuate civilians within fifty kilometers and orders MAGI backed up at Matsushiro 46.
- Orders the Pribnow Box abandoned during the Horror Angel intrusion and pulls the dazed Ritsuko away before the observation area floods 49.
- Helps arrange the protection and evacuation of survivors when Kaji transfers responsibility for them to her and Ritsuko aboard the Wunder 183.
- Oversees WILLE’s supplies and recovery efforts, ordering the use of Eva units and Sealing Pillars to restore urban areas before personnel retrieve materials for reuse 200.
- Jointly authorizes Kredit’s transition to independent operation and the release of the Eva units before the final battle 230.
Pilot Support
Misato offers emotional guidance alongside operational supervision 3 44.
- Encourages Shinji to recognize his achievements rather than define himself through other people’s reactions 3 44.
- Monitors injured pilots and brings Huang Zhetian food prepared by Asuka and Shinji during his hospitalization 14 26.
- Urges the pilots to support Rei rather than blame her for being quiet and withdrawn 48.
- Tension: Her concern for the children coexists with requiring them to fight. During the Space Angel briefing, she admits that the plan barely qualifies as an operation and offers resignation as their alternative 46.
- Encourages Shinji to face Gendo when visiting his mother’s grave, reminding him that what happens after an initial meeting also matters 59.
- Asks Huang Zhetian to help Shinji settle into school and defends the importance of flexible, independent thinking when discussing pilot behavior with Ritsuko 153 154.
- Backs Shinji during Operation Yashima after Gendo orders his replacement 162.
- Initially tries to dissuade Shinji from leaving her home and later forbids further piloting during WILLE’s operations, partly out of regret over the burdens previously placed on him 176 224.
- Ultimately supports Shinji’s freely chosen return to battle, acknowledges that his earlier piloting saved their lives, and pledges to take responsibility for his actions 235.
Investigation and Intelligence
- Uncovers Kaji’s simultaneous roles in NERV’s Special Inspection Department and the Japanese government’s internal investigation apparatus 61.
- Follows his lead concerning code 707 and discovers the concentration of pilot candidates in Shinji’s school 69 81.
- Uses Kaji’s recordings and memory card to continue investigating NERV, and recruits Hyuga to examine international Eva production 104.
- Forces access to the restricted laboratory where Ritsuko reveals the Rei vessels and Dummy System’s origins 119.
- Recognizes Huang Zhetian’s abilities as evidence that he does not belong to their world, but chooses continued trust rather than treating his unusual origins as grounds for suspicion 201 203.
Field Survival and Driving
- Carries a service pistol and uses cover while escorting Shinji through the Defense Force assault on NERV 98 131.
- Drives her Alpine A310 aggressively, including rapid acceleration and drifting out of a parking space 110 146.
- Reacts quickly enough to steer around a falling naval gun turret that threatens to crush her car 165.
- Shields Shinji from gunfire during the final battle, sustaining an abdominal wound while continuing to issue her decision as captain 235.
Equipment / Items
- Cross necklace — A silvery-white cross worn at her chest, visible during her account of her father’s death. She clutches it while praying for Shinji and Huang Zhetian during the Night Angel crisis. In the original storyline’s final battle, she identifies it as her father’s gift and gives it to Shinji 47 64 133.
- NERV uniform — Carries the rank insignia through which Kensuke recognizes her promotion 44.
- Blue car — Drives the pilots home after their mental resonance testing; later passages identify her car as an Alpine A310 44 110.
- Synchronization cassette — Provides the musical timing for Huang Zhetian and Asuka’s simultaneous attack on the Music Angel’s cores 15.
- Service pistol — Used when confronting Kaji and carried during the assault on headquarters; she temporarily surrenders it when taken for intelligence questioning 61 98 131.
- Deep-blue ring — Given to her by Kaji when they reaffirm their love. In the ordinary-life side story, she wears a blue ring she believes she won at a tavern 85 140.
- Kaji’s recordings and memory card — Intelligence materials she reviews while investigating NERV and international Eva construction 104.
- Wunder Warship — WILLE’s vessel and Misato’s command platform during the campaign to stop NERV and further Impacts 209 230 231.
- DSS Choker — Part of WILLE’s restrictions on Shinji after his recovery. Misato later presents a choker before his final deployment, only to discover he already has one from Huang Zhetian 211 235.
- Family photograph — Shows her son, Shinji, and Huang Zhetian together; she studies it while reflecting on Kaji and her responsibility toward Shinji 231.
Relationships
- Shinji Ikari — Housemate and pilot under her supervision. She comforts him, advocates for his performance, and is relieved when his new companions make him less lonely 3 10 11. Her concern develops into an explicitly maternal attachment, although she acknowledges burdening him with her own hopes 74. During the original storyline’s final battle, she gives him a family farewell kiss on the forehead and her father’s cross 133. In the Rebuild-era storyline, guilt and fear contribute to her cold reception after his recovery from Unit-01. They finally reconcile when she protects him from Sakura’s shot, accepts responsibility for his piloting, and supports his decision to stop Gendo 208 224 231 235.
- Huang Zhetian — Pilot and housemate whose initiative helps her secure naval cooperation. She enjoys his cooking and supports his recovery, but clashes with him over the apparent deaths of Mana and Musashi. He intends to save her using the Taiji Sword Hilt; no explicit revival of Misato with that item is shown in the supplied passages 6 18 26 38 39. After Kaji’s apparent death, the narration describes her feelings toward Huang Zhetian as romantically ambiguous, without establishing a formal relationship 110. In the Rebuild-era storyline, she welcomes him as family and repeatedly protests his teasing use of “Auntie” 146 163. She later refuses to investigate his unusual memories, considers him one of her own after he brings Kaji’s remains back, and jointly authorizes WILLE decisions with him. He nevertheless criticizes her handling of Shinji 201 203 211 230.
- Asuka — Pilot and housemate. Misato insists that she live with the other pilots to improve teamwork, despite Asuka’s wish to stay with Kaji, and supervises her synchronization training 10 15 16. Asuka accuses her of spoiling Shinji and reacts jealously to her reconciliation with Kaji. Misato later withholds Kaji’s information from Asuka to avoid undermining her ability to pilot Unit-02 62 104.
- Kaji — A man with whom she shares a romantic past. His familiarity embarrasses and irritates her, but they later lean against one another while discussing his assignment. Huang Zhetian encourages him to start over with her 5 19 30 42. She admits that his resemblance to her father frightened her, and they renew their intimacy and love; he gives her a deep-blue ring 60 81 85. She reunites with him during the original storyline’s final battle and stays with him after sending Shinji onward 133. In the Rebuild-era storyline, they have a son before Kaji’s eventual death leaves her with WILLE’s leadership. In the final renewed world, they are together again and have shared fourteen years of family life 230 231 243.
- Ritsuko Akagi — Longtime friend and colleague. They disagree over the Space Angel operation and Ritsuko’s secrecy; Misato nevertheless rescues her during the Horror Angel intrusion and dislikes her habit of shouldering every responsibility alone 30 46 49 50. Their conflict escalates when Misato slaps her over Shinji’s absorption into Unit-01 and again during the restricted laboratory revelations 81 119. They later work closely in WILLE, where Ritsuko challenges Misato’s avoidance of Shinji and comforts her over Kaji’s death 230 231.
- Dr. Katsuragi — Father. His neglect inspired resentment, while his final act of saving her became central to her grief and motivation for joining NERV 32 47. In the Rebuild-era account, he saves her by placing her in an emergency capsule during the Antarctic disaster 168.
- Gendo Ikari — Superior officer. She reports operations to him, accepts responsibility for Eva damage, and receives his praise after the Space Angel’s defeat 10 27 47. Her discovery of NERV’s secrets eventually places her in opposition to him as WILLE’s captain. In the renewed world, he is once more her superior, now as company president, and they converse amicably about their families 61 81 230 243.
- Rei Ayanami — Pilot whose isolation concerns her. Misato encourages the other pilots to offer Rei more companionship 48. During the Rebuild-era battle against the Power Angel, she tries to stop Rei’s unsupported charge with an N² Missile 178.
- Makoto Hyuga — Colleague who is attracted to her and assists her intelligence gathering. Misato considers but does not pursue a romantic involvement with him after Kaji’s apparent death, feeling unable to reciprocate his interest 63 104 110.
- Ryoji Kaji-kun — Her son with Kaji in the Rebuild-era storyline. Before the final battle, she has never met him and receives news and a photograph through Huang Zhetian. Shinji later tells her that he met the boy and likes him. In the renewed world, she describes having a son as part of her life with Kaji 230 231 235 243.
- Sakura Suzuhara — WILLE member whose attempt to shoot Shinji results in Misato being wounded while shielding him. Sakura subsequently treats Misato’s injury 235.
