Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial combat synchronization: 41% | 2 6 | Retrospective reports establish that Shinji activated an Eva and defeated an Angel without training or a plugsuit. Kaji identifies this as evidence of natural talent. |
| Mental resonance increased by eight points; synchronization caught up with Asuka | 44 | Testing records an eight-point rise in mental resonance. Akagi states that both his mental resonance and synchronization rate have caught up with Asuka’s; no new absolute synchronization percentage is given. |
| Highest recorded test results among the pilots | 63 | Shinji learns that he has achieved the highest results in the current testing. No absolute synchronization percentage is supplied. |
| Synchronization decline following the Night Angel incident | 69 | Akagi records a falling synchronization rate and suggests that psychological shock from the previous incident may be responsible, without reaching a firm conclusion. |
| Synchronization reaches 300 during Unit-01’s awakening | 79 | His synchronization rises rapidly during the Power Angel battle as Unit-01 enters a half-awakened state and Gendo attempts to make it fuse with the Angel’s S² Engine. |
| Loss of physical form within Unit-01 | 82 83 96 | Shinji becomes LCL and merges with Unit-01, entering its mindscape while the awakened Eva attempts to consume him. The Purification Chain activates, Huang intervenes, and Shinji ultimately chooses to return to reality. This is a dangerous loss of bodily integrity rather than a controlled technique. |
| Unit-01 awakening and Rei’s rescue in the Rebuild storyline | 179 180 | Shinji drives Unit-01 to defeat the Power Angel and rescues Rei from its core. Unit-01 opens Guf’s Door and begins Third Impact, which Kaworu halts with Unit-06 and a spear. |
| Apparent synchronization rate: 0.00% | 211 | WILLE’s deep-synchronization test reports that he cannot activate an Eva. The staff nevertheless regard awakening as a risk and fit him with a DSS Choker. The apparent zero reading is later reinterpreted during the final battle. |
| Dual-pilot operation of Unit-13 | 216 | Shinji and Kaworu activate Unit-13 and descend into Central Dogma. Its Dummy System subsequently takes control away from them. |
| Begins personal spear training | 225 | Huang gives him an unsharpened spear and begins teaching adaptable spear techniques. Shinji is challenged to pierce a boulder; the passage does not establish that he immediately completes the exercise. |
| Synchronization identified as infinite | 236 | Unit-01 activates in Minus Space, and Ibuki identifies Shinji’s synchronization rate as infinite, superseding the apparent zero reading. He seizes a Spear of Longinus from Unit-13 and transforms it into the Spear of Cassius. |
| Skilled spear combat against Unit-13 | 237 | Shinji executes precise attacks and can temporarily gain the upper hand against Gendo, although Gendo repeatedly counters with greater force. |
| Chooses a world without Evas | 241 | Shinji declares that he has rewritten the world into one where people can live without Evas. His parents carry out the final spear strike through Unit-01 and Unit-13, followed by the remaining Evas. This is the resolution of the Eva system rather than a permanent personal combat form. |
Background / History
Shinji’s mother disappeared when he was young, and his relationship with his father, NERV Commander Gendo Ikari, is marked by emotional distance. At fourteen, he struggles to understand what he must do to earn Gendo’s approval while carrying the responsibility of piloting Eva 3 83.
Before Huang Zhetian arrives in Japan, Shinji has already activated an Eva in untrained combat and defeated an Angel alone. Toji later credits him with three Angel victories 2 4 6.
Shinji lives under Misato’s guardianship. Huang Zhetian and Asuka subsequently join their household, bringing shared meals, arguments, and companionship into his daily life. Misato is pleased that he is no longer alone 10 11.
His recovered memories show that he witnessed his mother’s disappearance. Gendo told him that she had died and left him in his uncle’s care, despite his pleas not to be abandoned. Later recollections include a cousin accusing Gendo of causing Yui’s disappearance through an experiment, further complicating Shinji’s attachment to his parents 83 136.
The story subsequently moves from the original television and theatrical storyline into the Rebuild storyline. In the latter, Shinji again pilots Unit-01, experiences a rupture with Gendo over the danger to a friend, and returns during the Power Angel attack. His attempt to rescue Rei awakens Unit-01 and initiates an Impact that Kaworu interrupts 142 143 174 175 179 180 193.
After fourteen years asleep inside Unit-01, Shinji awakens into a profoundly changed world. He is chronologically twenty-eight but has not experienced those years or matured alongside his former classmates. His friends’ changed lives and WILLE’s hostility leave him struggling to understand his place in the aftermath 211 212 214 223.
Following the final confrontation with Gendo, Shinji chooses a world that does not require Evas. Later chapters establish his family life with Rei and their daughter, while Gendo and Yui prepare to reconnect with them 241 243 244.
Personality
Shinji is withdrawn, self-effacing, and highly sensitive to other people’s reactions. He frequently apologizes without having done anything wrong and tends to accept others’ opinions rather than assert his own. Huang Zhetian points out that even his instrumental hobby began on someone else’s advice 30 44.
Recognition strongly affects his mood. Gendo’s first praise leaves him visibly happy, and acknowledgment from Huang makes him unusually cheerful while helping prepare dinner. Nevertheless, improved test results do not resolve his unhappiness with piloting: he resents losing an ordinary life and being treated differently by classmates 10 11 44.
He is considerate despite his insecurity. Before the Space Angel operation, he plays along with Misato’s promised celebration because he wants her to return to command smiling. He also intervenes when Asuka antagonizes Rei 23 41 46.
His passivity is not absolute. Mana’s capture drives him to seek help and confront danger, while the Space Angel battle shows him deliberately rejecting the urge to run away 35 36 47.
His fear of rejection is central to his withdrawal. During the Night Angel’s mental confrontation, a figure resembling his childhood self identifies his fear of the versions of himself that exist in other people’s minds. Shinji admits that he is afraid of being hated, while the confrontation links his habitual apologies to self-blame and fear of injury 65.
He often interprets affection through suspicion. In the Rebuild storyline, friendly classmates leave him confused because he has long assumed that anyone approaching him kindly must have an ulterior motive. His difficulty making friends stems less from disliking companionship than from not knowing how to communicate or respond to it 154.
Shinji’s reluctance to fight coexists with a strong refusal to harm friends. After Unit-01 is used against Huang, his reverence for Gendo turns into defiance. He rejects the idea that saving many people automatically justifies sacrificing one person, although his hesitation also leaves him unable to act decisively in combat 173 174 175.
He can recover after severe emotional collapse. Huang privately contrasts Shinji’s deprived upbringing with his own happier childhood and admires Shinji’s repeated ability to sort through his feelings and pull himself together after being overwhelmed 117.
Piloting becomes both a burden and a source of identity. Although he initially wants to escape it, being forbidden to deploy during the Womb Angel attack leaves him feeling useless and desperate to protect Rei. After the fourteen-year interval, the apparent loss of his ability to synchronize similarly devastates him because he still sees piloting as his means of earning acceptance 112 113 211.
His later development centers on accepting reality and making deliberate choices rather than merely obeying or escaping. In the village, he accepts guidance because he fears acting recklessly again, then begins training with Huang and resolves to endure hardship. By his final conversation with Rei, he recognizes his earlier indecision and credits Huang and Misato with teaching him to preserve his original intentions and actively seek hope 223 225 228 244.
In the future-preview side story, the prospect of losing Rei gives him a painful understanding of Gendo’s grief. He nevertheless resolves never to withdraw from his daughter or repeat the emotional abandonment he experienced 93 94.
Abilities & Skills
Evangelion Piloting
Shinji demonstrates an immediate aptitude for Eva operation, reaching 41% synchronization in his first untrained battle 2 6.
- Combat movement: Pilots Unit-01 across mountainous terrain, leaps over a forest, and pushes its running speed beyond its usual limit during the Space Angel interception 47.
- Close combat: Uses a Progressive Knife against the volcanic Angel and forces its jaws open so Huang can insert an N² Missile 25.
- Rescue support: Helps Asuka drag Huang’s damaged Eva to safety and works with Huang to arrest Unit-00 and Unit-02’s fall during the Rain Angel attack 25 42.
- Power limitation: Unit-01 has a five-minute internal-power combat window during the Giant Machine pursuit 37.
- Heavy-blade combat: Wields a Greatsword and Plasma Vibrating Knives against the Power Angel, continuing his attack after Unit-01 loses a wrist 79.
- Positron sniping: Operates the Positron Cannon during the Rebuild Ramiel operation, including reloading, returning to position after an attack, and preparing to handle aiming deviations manually 161 162.
- Entry Plug extraction: Cools the damaged Unit-00 in a lake and uses Unit-01’s Progressive Knife to force open its hatch when bare-handed attempts fail 163.
- Dual-pilot operation: Pilots Unit-13 alongside Kaworu during the descent into Central Dogma 216.
- Spear combat: Uses the Spear of Cassius against Gendo’s Unit-13 with increasingly precise movements and techniques, at times gaining an advantage despite Gendo’s greater counterforce 236 237.
A.T. Field Deployment
Shinji can deploy Unit-01’s A.T. Field and coordinate it with other Evas 14 25 47.
- Combines fields with Asuka and Huang against the Music Angel, although the Angel’s attack breaks through their defense 14.
- Joins Asuka in neutralizing the volcanic Angel’s field, allowing their knives to open a breach 25.
- Merges his field with Huang’s to hold back the descending Space Angel until Rei and Asuka arrive 47.
- Combines his field with a Greatsword strike to breach the Power Angel’s defensive field, although the Angel blocks the attack itself 79.
- Deploys a full-power field with the other Evas against the descending Eighth Angel in the Rebuild storyline. The Angel penetrates the barrier and pierces Unit-01’s palm, transmitting severe pain to him through synchronization 169.
- Unit-01 can damage the Womb Angel after it incorporates Rei’s feelings because she has no emotional barrier against Shinji; this opening is specific to that encounter rather than a general ability to bypass all A.T. Fields 113.
Awakening and Extreme Synchronization
- During the original-storyline Power Angel battle, Shinji’s synchronization rises to 300 as Unit-01 approaches awakening. He subsequently turns into LCL and becomes trapped within the Eva’s mindscape 79 82 83.
- In the Rebuild storyline, his determination to retrieve Rei drives Unit-01’s awakening and the opening of Guf’s Door. The resulting Impact threatens humanity until Kaworu intervenes; Shinji does not demonstrate safe, independent control of that process 180.
- In Minus Space, his synchronization is identified as infinite. He reactivates Unit-01, takes a Spear of Longinus from Unit-13, and transforms it into the Spear of Cassius 236.
Personal Training
- Begins learning spear techniques from Huang, who emphasizes adaptable attacks and catching opponents off guard. His initial exercise uses an unsharpened spear against a large boulder 225.
Domestic Skills
- Prepares breakfast and assists Huang with washing and preparing vegetables 3 11.
- Helps make lunch for Huang during his hospital recovery 26.
- Packs lunches with Huang, including a meal he prepares for Rei 28.
- Feeds Huang’s cat, Pianpian, at Misato’s apartment 106.
- Helps Hikari with household chores alongside Ayanami during his stay in the village 228.
Music
- Practices an instrument as a hobby; the supplied passages do not identify the instrument 30.
- Requests the composer’s name after Huang’s flute performance and receives a copy of the sheet music 21.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Evangelion Unit-01 — His assigned Eva; described as a development-stage test model rather than a production model 4 6. It later awakens, houses him during his prolonged absence, and becomes his vehicle for the final confrontation with Gendo in Minus Space 180 214 236.
- Progressive Knife — Used in close combat against the volcanic Angel 25. He also uses it to force open Unit-00’s damaged hatch after the Rebuild Ramiel battle 163.
- Plugsuit — Used for Eva operations, though his first battle and a later harmonic-synchronization experiment take place without one 6 49.
- Walkman and headphones — Frequently used during solitary downtime at home 3 48. Rei retrieves his discarded Walkman after his Rebuild-storyline departure from NERV; the device subsequently serves as the vessel in which her soul returns to him during her rescue 175 180.
- Sheet music from Huang Zhetian — Given to him after a flute performance that evokes memories of his mother 21.
- Purification Chain — A single-use necklace Huang gives him before his departure from NERV. It suppresses negative emotions and maintains mental clarity; it later activates while he is merged with Unit-01 74 82 83.
- Greatsword — Wielded by Unit-01 against the Power Angel during the original-storyline battle 79.
- Plasma Vibrating Knife / High-Vibration Particle Knife — Shoulder-stored blades used against the Power Angel and Womb Angel 79 113.
- Positron Cannon — Operated during the Rebuild Ramiel sniping operation, with national electrical infrastructure supplying its firing power 161 162.
- Evangelion Unit-13 — Co-piloted with Kaworu during the attempt to retrieve the two spears in Central Dogma. The Dummy System overrides their control 216.
- DSS Choker — WILLE’s physical anti-awakening safeguard, fitted because its staff do not trust him. Kaworu removes it and wears it himself before the Unit-13 operation. Shinji later voluntarily fastens a DSS Choker around his neck during Huang’s efforts to restore his resolve 211 216 225.
- Training spear — An unsharpened weapon Huang supplies for personal training 225.
- Summoner from Huang — Given to him before the final battle. Huang explains that it can merge with an Eva to block harmful influences and actions, freeing Shinji from others’ constraints. It also contains photographs and videos of Ayanami; the supplied passage describes its intended function rather than demonstrating its activation 231.
- Spear of Cassius — Created when Shinji transforms a Spear of Longinus seized from Unit-13; used in his final battle with Gendo 236 237.
Relationships
- Gendo Ikari — Father and commanding officer. Shinji admires and fears him, but Gendo refuses both his request to help Mana and his invitation to a school advancement meeting. After the Space Angel battle, Shinji recognizes that his desire for paternal praise motivates his piloting 9 36 40 47. He later visits Yui’s empty grave with Gendo and says that he is glad they talked, although the encounter leaves him confused 59. Their relationship deteriorates after the Dummy System incidents, and in the Rebuild storyline Shinji openly rejects his father’s willingness to endanger Huang 71 72 73 74 174 175. During the final resolution, Shinji confronts Gendo’s inability to acknowledge his own weakness; Gendo recognizes his avoidance and apologizes while embracing him. In the new life afterward, Gendo wants to visit Shinji and his family and personally knocks at their gate 240 241 243 244.
- Yui Ikari — Mother. Huang’s flute music brings back painful memories of her 21. Shinji encounters both troubling apparitions and reassuring memories of her within Unit-01’s mindscape. Her encouragement helps him choose his own path and return to the people waiting outside 83 96. At the ending, he sees Yui and Gendo together as they carry out the final spear strike; afterward, Yui reassures Gendo that Shinji will not make their daughter experience the abandonment he suffered 241 244.
- Misato Katsuragi — Guardian and operational commander. She comforts him through piloting-related distress, acknowledges the pressure adults have placed on him, and encourages him not to let others dictate his feelings 3 31 44. She urges him to take the first step toward speaking with Gendo and later tells him to fight for himself rather than lose his identity to others’ demands 59 131. Their relationship becomes strained after his fourteen-year absence: her refusal to answer his questions and insistence on controlling his safety contribute to his decision to leave WILLE with Black Rei. Akagi later observes that Misato remains unable to face him directly despite being glad he has returned 211 230.
- Huang Zhetian — Fellow pilot, housemate, and supportive friend. Huang visits him in hospital, shares cooking duties, and repeatedly challenges his habit of belittling himself 11 18 28 30 44. He gives Shinji the Purification Chain and enters Unit-01’s mindscape to retrieve him 74 82 83. His apparent death leaves Shinji grieving, while his return in a clone body and pretended amnesia unsettle their reunion 115. In the Rebuild storyline, Huang explicitly tells Shinji that he is one of the people he fights to protect. After the time skip, he defends Shinji against scapegoating, works to rebuild his convictions, teaches him spear techniques, and entrusts him with a Summoner 157 213 223 225 231.
- Asuka — Fellow pilot and housemate. Their relationship includes frequent bickering and mockery, but she evacuates him after his severe injury and cooperates with him in subsequent battles 11 14 25. His improved test results aggravate her resentment, yet she also fears that he may never return from Unit-01 63 96. In the Rebuild storyline, she comes to respect his protest on Huang’s behalf and later explicitly defends his right not to pilot, arguing that his return to save everyone deserves gratitude rather than punishment 175 213. In the village, she urges him to cherish his time with Ayanami 228.
- Rei Ayanami — Fellow pilot, romantic interest, and eventual wife. She cares for him during his recovery, responds warmly to their conversations, and feels warmth at the thought of being liked by him. Shinji privately acknowledges his attraction, although he later senses an unexplained distance between them 13 16 18 21 47. Their later handclasp reinforces his realization that someone can need him personally, and her attachment to him creates an opening during the Womb Angel encounter 100 113. In the Rebuild storyline, she tries to bring him closer to Gendo, and Shinji’s rescue of her from the Power Angel precipitates Unit-01’s awakening 171 180. The future-preview side story depicts them married with a daughter, while the concluding chapters establish their family life after the world’s rewrite 93 243 244.
- Black Rei / Ayanami — The Ayanami who retrieves him from WILLE aboard Mark.09 and leads him back to NERV. Shinji initially thanks her in connection with the Walkman and asks her to explain the world’s changes, but her responses do not match the familiarity he expects 211 212. They later share village life and household work, and he promises to stay with her while resolving to continue searching for Ayanami 228.
- Aiko Ikari / Riko — Daughter in the future-preview side story, where she is named Aiko and also called Riko. Shinji is affectionate toward her and, faced with Rei’s limited remaining life, vows not to repeat Gendo’s withdrawal from his child 93 94. The final family-life chapters also establish that Shinji and his wife have a daughter whom Gendo and Yui wish to visit 243 244.
- Mana Kirishima — His first date and first romantic relationship. They kiss during their outing, but Mana ends the relationship after her rescue and leaves with Musashi 33 37 38.
- Kaji — Adult adviser. His praise makes Shinji happy; later, he urges Shinji to recognize that being an Eva pilot gives him the ability to act rather than remain helpless 6 36. By sharing his own past, Kaji helps Shinji reconsider his refusal to fight during the Power Angel emergency. Shinji thanks him and resolves not to let the same tragedy happen again 76 77. In the later storyline, Kaji rejects blaming Shinji for the adults’ failures, and Huang identifies rebuilding Shinji’s resolve as part of their agreement 185 213.
- Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida — School friends who defend and tease him. Shinji identifies them as exceptions to the classmates who began treating him differently after he became a pilot 4 26 44. After the fourteen-year interval, he struggles to comprehend their changed lives, then reconnects with them in the village. Toji’s account of helping others through hardship strengthens his resolve, while Kensuke encourages him to speak with Gendo if he has the opportunity 214 223 228.
- Kaworu Nagisa — Fifth Child and an emotionally significant companion. Shinji first encounters him playing piano in an abandoned church. Kaworu later stays with him during his grief for Huang, kisses him to steady his breathing, and tells him that he likes him 106 115 125. Shinji’s affection collapses into shock when Kaworu reveals an A.T. Field during the Central Dogma confrontation 126. In the Rebuild storyline, Kaworu stops Unit-01’s Impact, later offers Shinji companionship at NERV, and wears the DSS Choker in his place before they co-pilot Unit-13 180 212 214 216.
- Hikari Horaki — Former class representative and later Toji’s wife. Shinji helps her with chores during his recovery in the village 223 228.
- Pianpian — Huang’s cat, whom Shinji helps feed. In the future-preview side story, Rei asks him to care for the cat after her departure 93 106.

NERV’s Strategic Priority
- Akagi regards Shinji and Unit-01 as decisive pieces in NERV’s plans, with Huang and the Special Unit serving as backups 46.
- During the Horror Angel emergency, Gendo orders Unit-01 protected even if the other three Evas must be abandoned 50.
- After Unit-01’s escape from the Night Angel incident, Akagi questions whether the Eva is truly on humanity’s side and worries that Shinji and Rei would not forgive NERV if they learned its secret. Gendo continues to treat Huang’s Special Unit as a backup 66.
- In the Rebuild storyline, Gendo explicitly identifies Shinji and Rei as the central participants in his planned ritual and continues encouraging their interaction despite Fuyutsuki’s concern over the cruelty to his son 169.
Yui’s Grave and the Night Angel
- Worries about meeting Gendo and asks Rei what kind of person his father is. Misato encourages him to stop avoiding the encounter 59.
- Visits Yui’s grave with Gendo, who explains that it contains no remains and that Yui lives in his memory. Shinji tells him that he is glad they spoke before Gendo departs by helicopter with Rei 59.
- Achieves the highest current test results, provoking Asuka’s resentment, before deploying against the Twelfth Angel, the Night Angel 63.
- Attacks alongside Huang and is swallowed by the Angel’s spreading shadow. Rei and Asuka cannot rescue them, leaving the trapped pilots with sixteen hours of life support 63.
- Experiences a mental confrontation with his childhood self that exposes his fear of rejection, self-blame, and resentment toward his father 65.
- Later awakens in a hospital room with Rei beside him. Akagi and Gendo observe the cleaned Unit-01 with renewed unease, while subsequent testing shows that Shinji’s synchronization has declined 66 69.
Dummy System Crisis and Departure
- Remains unaware of Toji’s selection as Unit-03’s pilot when Misato leaves for the activation test. Unit-03 becomes the Angel Shamshiel and destroys the test site 70.
- Is restrained and battered by the Angel in combat. Gendo severs Shinji’s synchronization and activates Unit-01’s Dummy System despite warnings that it remains unreliable 71.
- Cannot regain control when the system goes out of control and fights Huang. Shinji repeatedly begs his father to stop it 72.
- Confronts Gendo in the command room and threatens to hurt himself with a knife. Staff restrain him, and Gendo dismisses his distress as weakness and indecision 73.
- Tells Rei that Gendo has betrayed him just as he had begun to enjoy speaking with his father. After confinement and prolonged doubt, he decides never to pilot again 73 74.
- Leaves after Gendo orders his records erased and Rei assigned to Unit-01. At the station, Huang gives him a Purification Chain, and Misato reveals that his classmates were potential Eva pilots. An Angel warning interrupts his intended departure 74.
Power Angel and Unit-01’s Mindscape
- Reconsiders his refusal after Kaji offers to share his past. Shinji thanks him, resolves not to let the same tragedy recur, and asks Gendo to let him pilot Unit-01 76 77.
