Background / History

Early life and imprisonment

Li Xingke came from the impoverished household of a minor official. After graduating from military academy, he began his career as a young officer without influential connections. Hong Gu later caught him secretly supplying medicine to a sick prisoner. The resulting interrogation damaged his internal organs, leaving him prone to coughing up blood 5.

Military law called for his execution, but the young Jiang Lihua intervened, with Gao Hai also speaking in his favor. Thereafter, he devoted himself to protecting the country and its people, restoring the sovereign’s authority, and overthrowing the chief eunuchs 5.

Illness and treatment

His injuries were compounded by intensive work and Shen Hu testing. By the time Lin Cuo forced him to undergo examination, he had spent three days without a full night’s sleep; Takemi Tae later found that he was working twenty hours a day 23 24.

  • Recorded damage: impaired pulmonary circulation, chest and abdominal adhesions, severely impaired spleen function, chronic blood loss, compensatory heart-muscle thickening, autonomic dysfunction, and abnormal nerve potentials from high-load piloting 23.
  • Untreated prognosis: continuing his workload risked sudden internal bleeding, cardiopulmonary failure, or neurogenic shock. Conventional treatment required at least three years and withdrawal from intensive duties 23.
  • Reason for accepting examination: Jiang Lihua personally asked him not to sacrifice his life to duty and reminded him of his promise to show her the outside world 23.
  • Medical consent: he accepted preservation of tissue and germ-cell samples for medical purposes after Lin Cuo removed the cloning clauses 23.
  • Recovery: after consenting to Takemi’s high-risk treatment, he slept for nineteen hours and awoke without his familiar chest pain, dizziness, or bloody coughing 24 25.

His recovery immediately changed his political standing. Officers who had respected him but feared investing in a dying leader began approaching him, transforming the Imperial Succession Faction from a symbolic opposition group into an actual center of power 26.

Personality

Li Xingke’s loyalty is directed toward Great Han and Jiang Lihua rather than toward Lin Cuo personally. He explicitly rejects ambitions to depose the sovereign or establish his own power base. Lin Cuo considers this devotion the reason he can safely entrust troops to a man who distrusts him 5 7.

He is exacting, practical, and unwilling to accept vague military plans. When Lin Cuo proposes bringing outside troops into Luoyang, Li immediately questions troop strength, deployment justification, railway scheduling, pay, frontier defenses, informants, and which strategic sites must be secured first 7.

His dedication also makes him dangerously self-neglectful: he initially treats medical care as something that can wait until his assignments are finished. Over time, he becomes more willing to enforce rest schedules and reject additional work outright, including refusing responsibility for an army-wide equipment overhaul 23 27 135.

He recognizes ability without regard to social background or gender. Chou Xianglin credits him with first trusting her with important tactical problems and holding her to demanding professional standards 144.

Abilities & Skills

Military command and planning

  • His system ratings place diplomacy, military ability, administration, and learning generally above twenty, with military approaching twenty-five; strategy is comparatively lower 15.
  • Integrates the Central Army and Hexi Army within six hours after reaching Tong Pass 43.
  • Combines aerial reconnaissance, attacks on command infrastructure, disruption of rail equipment, and artillery coordination during the Longyou campaign 43.
  • Commands more than sixty units through Shen Hu’s integrated Luoyang tactical interface while personally fighting the Lancelot 33.
  • Supports mission command: isolated subordinate units should pursue established operational objectives rather than wait indefinitely for superior approval 93.

Knightmare Frame piloting

  • Pilots Shen Hu in simultaneous combat and command roles, handling reinforcement requests and operational approvals during his duel with Suzaku 33.
  • Defeats the Lancelot at Pingle Observatory; later public combat footage records the victory as taking four minutes 34 54.
  • Uses flight-assisted Rope Dart maneuvers to change direction abruptly and attack from blind spots 33.
  • Targets communications antennas, cannon barrels, sensors, and joints with minimal wasted movement 34.
  • Deliberately lowers the particle cannon’s output near palace buildings to limit structural damage 33 35.

Military administration and Kirin Governance

  • Audits military registers, payroll, and communications while rewriting training manuals 23.
  • Designs the Combined Army Committee’s six divisions: military organization, armaments, railways, artillery, military academies, and theaters of operations 67.
  • Drafts regulations separating professional disagreement from political disloyalty and twenty-seven provisions distinguishing theater coordination from private military alliances 67.
  • Uses suspended military rail access and frozen accounts to compel Jingzhou’s reorganization, while Central Army pay and benefits undermine the local commanders’ support 51.
  • Pledges his own reputation to protect officers from accusations of disloyalty or insubordination based solely on tactical or professional objections 93.

Political credibility

  • His standing in the army makes the chief eunuchs reluctant to kill him openly, fearing damage to central stability and foreign confidence 12.
  • During the coup, soldiers accept his guarantees of hearings, protection for families, and safety upon disarmament; his reputation makes these assurances more credible than equivalent promises from Lin Cuo 35.
  • Negotiates safeguards for emergency government, including independent reporting to Jiang Lihua and oversight of purge authorities 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shen Hu — His high-load experimental Knightmare Frame, equipped with integrated flight systems, a chest-mounted Heavy Particle Cannon—also called the Heaven-Shattering Overlord—and forearm Rope Darts 33 43.
    • Upgrades include automatic attitude stabilization, weapons-priority management, voice commands, a tactical data link, and an integrated theater-command display 33.
    • A rebuilt seat and sakuradite microfield reduce physiological strain. Takemi’s monitoring thresholds automatically limit output if cardiopulmonary readings become abnormal 33.
  • Lin military command token — A dark blue-green metal tally recognized by seven Hexi regiments, two Anxi regiments, and junior and mid-ranking officers of a Gao Hai armored wing. It enables emergency contact and support, though official deployments still require district countersignatures 5.
  • Sword — Carried sheathed; he repeatedly rests his hand on its hilt when angered by Lin Cuo’s conduct 4 30 157.
  • Armored campaign train — Provides mobile headquarters, communications staff, railway officers, medical cars, and a bedroom protected by an imperial instruction reserving seven hours of daily rest 42.

Relationships

  • Jiang Lihua — Sovereign and childhood rescuer. He places exceptional trust in her, obeys her military orders, and promises to show her the world beyond the palace. She repeatedly insists that he rest, survive, and return from battle 5 23 33 42.
  • Lin Cuo / Lin Fengxian — Distrusted political partner and persistent source of excessive assignments. Li recognizes his technical and organizational ability but challenges his methods, emergency powers, personal recklessness, and covert intervention abroad 5 28 46 85 157.
  • Chou Xianglin — Trusted officer and collaborator. She monitors his health, stays through his treatment, and reports his rest hours to Jiang Lihua. She later privately acknowledges having fallen for him; no completed marriage is documented 24 25 44 144.
  • Takemi Tae — Physician responsible for his recovery and subsequent health restrictions. He follows her prescribed rest schedule while the chief eunuchs investigate whether he has truly recovered 24 25 27.
  • Hong Gu — Caught him supplying medicine to a prisoner, leading to the interrogation that caused his longstanding injuries 5.
  • Eight Grand Eunuchs — Political enemies whose control of the sovereign he seeks to end. His recovery turns him into a long-term threat they can no longer simply outlast 5 26.
  • Suzaku Kururugi — Battlefield opponent at Pingle Observatory. Li condemns his intervention in Great Han’s palace and questions his service to the nation occupying his homeland 33.
  • Lelouch — Wartime staff coordinator whose Indian-front orders require Li’s final approval. Li approves his first set of operational arrangements 94.
  • Cao Yuanming — Fellow senior military figure. Li is wary of his inflated prestige and refuses to take on an equipment-standardization overhaul at the conference where Cao accepts its directorship 43 135.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Building an imperial military faction

Lin Cuo appoints Li Xingke as the Hexi Lin Clan’s temporary military liaison and secures Jiang Lihua’s authorization for him to revise drill manuals and establish urgent military contacts. Li accepts the authority while rating Lin Cuo as more capable—and more threatening—than before 5.

His subsequent recovery forces the anti-eunuch conspirators to accelerate their preparations. Jiang Lihua blocks attempts to expose him to a high-load piloting test, while Takemi restricts access to his medical information 26 27.

Luoyang coup

Li commands the military side of the operation, confronts and defeats Suzaku’s Lancelot, and prevents the chief eunuchs’ forces from regrouping 27 33 34.

After Xiang Sheng’s death, he broadcasts Jiang Lihua’s edict and secures mass surrenders by guaranteeing hearings and prohibiting attacks on disarmed soldiers. He kills Xia Wang with a low-output particle beam that spares the mausoleum’s main hall, but afterward confronts Lin Cuo over the extent of the court’s destruction 35 36.

Centralization and regional campaigns

BETA war and later responsibilities

  • Hive penetration planning: urges Lin Cuo to remain behind the front line and proposes that Tōdō lead the assault instead 85.
  • Kashgar Western Front: assumes overall coordination of the outer combat zone after Jiang Lihua redistributes part of his southern workload; retains final veto over Lelouch’s Indian-front orders 94.
  • Postwar military planning: handles Central General Staff reorganization, the Kashgar review, and revised lunar and Martian defense plans, while refusing another army-wide equipment assignment 135.
  • E.U. crisis: objects fiercely upon learning that Great Han secretly assisted Smilas’s takeover. His assigned responsibilities are narrowed to overall military coordination, ceasefire boundaries, and final veto, with an executive bureau handling detailed work 157.

Trivia

  • Lin Cuo privately thinks of him as a “Time-Limited Five-Star General Card” whose recovery would make him permanent; Li knows nothing of this system-based assessment 8 23.
  • A state medical broadcast publicizes his reproductive assessment without his permission. He responds with an urgent military telegram demanding to know who authorized its release 54.
  • The broadcast’s claim that he may have spent twenty-four years operating at only ten percent of his true strength is publicity wording, not a documented power measurement 54.
