Background / History

Student and Underground Fighter

Kallen maintained two identities in Area 11: a supposedly sickly young lady attending Ashford Academy and an active resistance pilot in Ohgi’s organization, which he had inherited from Naoto Kouzuki. Her original machine was a modified Glasgow assembled from Britannian battlefield wreckage. At school, frequent sick leave and deliberately frail behavior concealed her underground activities 21 49 78.

Her resistance experience shaped her distrust of established leadership. She believed small urban groups bore much of the danger of rescuing civilians and fighting Britannian troops, while the Liberation Front claimed authority through seniority and the Six Kyoto Houses controlled resources from relative safety 40.

East Sea Peace Conference

Kallen traveled to Luoyang with credentials identifying her as a youth liaison for an urban humanitarian relief network. Before the conference, she nearly clashed with Britannian guards after objecting to their use of “Elevens” rather than the invitation’s designation, “civilian representatives of Area 11” 29.

She initially regarded Lin Cuo as an associate of the Eunuch Faction and another self-interested noble. During negotiations over the government-in-exile, she challenged whether unified registration would place urban resistance weapons under the control of larger factions or Great Han. His recognition of Area 11’s sovereignty and proposal for shared rules binding Great Han changed her political assessment, though not her personal wariness 29 40.

Recruitment and Red Lotus Command

The government-in-exile’s preparatory committee selected Kallen as an early candidate for high-performance KMFs. She subsequently began testing the Guren Shen Hu, a machine tailored to her physique and piloting habits 41 49.

Lin Cuo appointed her Allegiance Central Commandant and Red Lotus Commandant, giving her the Red Lotus Separate Division: 360 TQ-21 units organized into six battalions, supported by maintenance, communications, engineering, and logistics personnel. Defense of Goryeo

During Operation White Chrysanthemum, Kallen organized the Goryeo settlement’s defense against Britannian airborne troops. She and her Ashford classmate Lelouch discovered each other’s concealed military involvement at the command post, then cooperated to funnel enemy Sutherlands into controlled streets 78.

Kallen intercepted Suzaku Kururugi’s Lancelot before it could reach the underground Quarantine Zone. She rejected his appeal to abandon armed resistance and reform Britannia from within, becoming especially hostile upon learning that he was the former prime minister’s son. After Clovis canceled the operation because of the BETA crisis, she allowed the Lancelot to withdraw and remained on guard until the last Britannian transport departed 79.

Public Recognition and Family Break

Great Han’s coverage of the Kashgar fighting presented Area 11’s soldiers under their own flag, names, and ranks. Kallen recognized the broadcast as propaganda but valued its acknowledgment that they possessed a nation and army rather than merely an insurgent network. Lin Cuo’s willingness to enter the fighting also strengthened her respect for him 111.

At Kaguya’s urging, she wrote Lin Cuo a personal get-well letter. She accepted the need to keep Area 11 present in his thoughts, but explicitly prohibited treating her personal relationships as diplomatic commitments 112.

During the World Mobile Weapons Tournament, Milly Ashford publicly revealed Kallen’s Stadtfeld identity and Britannian noble ancestry. Earl Stadtfeld responded by declaring her actions treasonous and freezing her inheritance rights. Privately, he ordered traceable businesses held under her mother’s name transferred through the Six Kyoto Houses into the Kouzuki Culture and Military Dependents Relief Fund 169 175.

World Mobile Weapons Tournament

Lin Cuo made Kallen and the upgraded Guren Shen Hu the tournament’s Defender’s Platform: challengers had to defeat her before advancing to the highest-tier competition. Her opening match also served as a live test of an immature two-person control system, with Lin Cuo as copilot 168 169.

The final three opponents fought Kallen together in a last-minute demonstration arranged by Lin Cuo. She insisted on piloting alone and demanded that a victory be accompanied by a public denial that the Guren was a gift to his mistress. After defeating all three Knights of the Round, she regarded the result as a victory for Area 11 177 178.

Persian Campaign

Seventeen days after defeating the knights, Kallen witnessed beams destroying Indian armor and intercepting artillery fire in northeastern Persia. The scale of the threat sharply diminished her earlier sense of triumph. With Lin Cuo in the rear command cockpit, she brought the Guren down to ground-skimming altitude under fire 178 179.

Seeing Lin Cuo share the danger rather than merely direct others brought her trust to the system’s current relationship cap. She offered to put their earlier conflicts behind them, but continued to confront his behavior—particularly his calculated emotional appeal to Nina during a subsequent call 182 183.

She takes pride in her abilities and resents suggestions that her machine or command came through sexual favoritism. Rather than surrender the position because of gossip, she defends her right to use those resources against Britannia and proves herself in training and combat 60 177.

Although deeply loyal to Area 11 and respectful of Kaguya’s royal standing, Kallen maintains personal boundaries. She insists on control over publicity photographs and refuses to let diplomacy obligate her affection. Her growing attachment to Lin Cuo does not prevent her from criticizing his manipulation or inappropriate conduct 52 112 183.
