Background / History
Gloriosa found Abona aboard a defeated pirate ship when he was two or three years old and brought him onto her crew. The crew trained him in combat while Gloriosa encouraged his ambition to become strong enough to protect her, Geuro, and the others. 110
At fourteen, Abona began sailing independently. He later formed the Sun Pirates with more than a dozen companions, pursuing freedom and adventure in the New World. After the crew helped Roger escape, the Marines placed a 170 million Beli bounty on Abona. 87
His captain, Monf, was killed by the then-Marine Admiral Zephyr. Abona later told Gloriosa that, after something happened to Geuro, he followed Limore and founded another Sun Pirates crew. 87 107
The Marines eventually captured Abona and his companions. During their escort, the Celestial Dragon Bokuroi took them as slaves; Abona's companions gradually died under captivity, leaving him as the sole survivor. An explosive collar prevented escape, while threats against his companions forced him into submission. 87 88
Nova encountered Abona during the raid on Mary Geoise, broke his explosive collar, and brought him aboard the Eberle. After escaping, Nova removed Abona's Seastone cuffs with Demon Blade Muramasa and offered him a place in the Tru Kingdom. 86 87 88
Appearance
When first freed, Abona was an extremely thin, filthy man with shoulder-length tangled hair, a gaunt face, gray unwashed clothing, and the appearance of someone reduced to skin and bones by imprisonment. 87
After bathing and receiving new clothes, he appeared imposing and mature despite remaining somewhat gaunt. 89
- Shoulder-length hair, later combed back. 87 89
- Carries the Supreme Grade Sword Dawn constantly, including while bathing. 94 128
- Often stands with his arms folded around Dawn in a rigid, disciplined posture. 158 159
Personality
Abona is reserved and uncomfortable in crowded social settings, preferring to remain apart rather than be surrounded by strangers. His reunion with Gloriosa reveals a far more emotional side: he openly weeps and regards her as close family. 106
He is intensely loyal to Nova, whose rescue gave him freedom and a new purpose. This loyalty is accompanied by strong remorse when he accidentally reveals sensitive information about Nova's actions at Mary Geoise. 107 109
Years of slavery left Abona fearful of Celestial Dragons despite his strength. His companions' support later helps him begin releasing that fear rather than allowing it to hinder his future. 259 263
