Background / History
Village life and the Calamity Wave
Raphtalia grew up in a loving family in a seaside Demi-Human village. She played with Keel and the other children in a nearby meadow, while her closest friend, Rifana, lived next door. Stories told by the adults made the Shield Hero a familiar figure to her 40 41 42.
A rift appeared in the sky while the children were playing, heralding a Calamity Wave. Raphtalia’s father fought approaching skeletons with light magic, and her mother defended the villagers with a naginata. A three-headed canine monster overwhelmed the evacuation and pursued them toward the sea. With escape cut off at a cliff, her mother threw Raphtalia into the water while both parents remained behind to hold off the monster 41 44.
Reconstruction and enslavement
Washed ashore after the Wave, Raphtalia returned to the cliff and discovered that her parents had died. She buried them, then tried to honor their final wishes by encouraging the survivors to rebuild. Keel and Rifana were among the friends who survived, but fewer than a quarter of the village’s inhabitants remained 47.
The rebuilding effort ended when soldiers from the Royal City raided the village. They murdered the elderly and men and captured women and children for sale. Raphtalia survived because the attackers considered her valuable as a slave; she subsequently endured abuse from a previous master 40 47.
Rescue and recovery
Chuan Wenwu found Raphtalia near death in a slave shop and purchased her freedom before the trader disposed of unsellable slaves. He and Bruce brought her to an inn, where they cleaned, clothed, and treated her. On waking, she initially mistook the unfamiliar comfort for a dying hallucination and feared punishment from her new master 39 40.
Chuan Wenwu promised not to treat her as a slave and to remove her mark once she could withstand the procedure. After learning that her parents were dead, he offered her a place with him while warning that his future plans could be dangerous. She agreed to stay 40 43.
Joining the party
Raphtalia’s fear of sleeping alone led her to seek Chuan Wenwu’s company at night. She explained that Bruce reminded her of the monster that killed her parents. With Chuan Wenwu’s encouragement, she apologized to Bruce the following morning and began feeling safe around him 45 46.
As she joined the adventuring party, Chuan Wenwu sought a safer means for her to defend herself than frontline combat. He considered training her as a mage or priest and arranged an aptitude test, which revealed affinities for light and dark magic 48 49.
Appearance
- Eyes: Reddish-brown; initially described as dull and fearful 40.
- Ears and tail: Round raccoon ears and a tail that bristles when frightened 43 44.
- Build: Small and severely underweight at rescue, with bony shoulders and very thin arms 42 43 49.
- Slave mark: A cursed Magic Circle on her chest, through which she senses her connection to Chuan Wenwu 38 40.
Personality
Before the disasters, Raphtalia was cheerful and enthusiastic, proposing games and sharing running advice with her friends. After losing her parents, she showed determination by rallying the surviving villagers, even forcing herself to smile while grieving 41 47.
Slavery left her timid, fearful of touch, and reluctant to express basic needs. She hid her hunger and questioned whether she deserved a proper meal because she was “just a slave.” Food, reassurance, and patient companionship gradually restored her willingness to speak and explore her surroundings, though nighttime panic persisted 42 43 45 46.
Abilities & Skills
Illusion Magic Aptitude
Raphtalia has affinities for both light and dark magic, confirmed by the magic shop owner 49.
- Raccoon Demi-Humans naturally use light refraction and dark shadows to create illusions 49.
- No named spell, completed magical training, or demonstrated illusion is documented in the supplied chapters 49.
- Her affinity is presented as characteristic of her race, rather than evidence of exceptional prodigy status 49.
Running
Raphtalia was one of the fastest runners among her childhood friends 41.
- A burst of speed allowed her to leave the others behind.
- She advised her friends to swing their arms forward and run with full effort.
- Despite her stamina, she eventually needed to rest while some of the boys continued playing 41.
Literacy
- Her childhood education enabled her to read the restaurant’s “No Demi-Humans allowed” sign 42.
Health and Slave Curse
| Condition | Documented details |
|---|---|
| Illnesses at rescue | Moderate cold and fever, stomach ulcer, mild anemia, and slight poisoning 39. |
| Nutritional and physical weakness | Severe hunger, mild dehydration, moderate weakness, and moderate malnutrition 39. |
| Panic disorder | Darkness and being alone trigger fear, chest tightness, and pain. Bruce’s canine appearance initially evokes the monster attack 45. |
| Treatment | Chuan Wenwu brews condition-specific, uncommon-grade remedies; Bruce helps administer them. Elhart later remarks on her rapid improvement 39 46. |
| Slave curse | Its punishment mechanism causes irresistible pain when activated. Immediate removal is judged unsafe because of her frailty; Chuan Wenwu postpones it until she is stronger 38 40. |
Equipment / Items
- Canvas cloak — A thick, roomy cloak supplied by Elhart and placed around her shoulders by Chuan Wenwu to keep her warm during recovery 42.
Relationships
- Chuan Wenwu — Rescuer, caregiver, and party leader. His identity as the Shield Hero helps her trust him; she later confides in him about her losses and fears 40 43 45 49.
- Bruce — Fellow party member whom she calls “Big Brother Bruce.” Initial trauma-driven fear gives way to reassurance after he accepts her apology and gently pats her head 45 46.
- Father and mother — Loving parents who died protecting her. Their request that she survive, remain strong, and keep smiling motivates her efforts to rebuild the village 44 47.
- Rifana — Best friend and next-door neighbor. She shares her dream of marrying the Shield Hero and survives the Calamity Wave; her later fate is not established here 41 47.
- Keel — Childhood friend and playmate who supports Raphtalia’s attempt to rally the surviving villagers 41 47.
- Elhart — Weapon-shop owner who witnesses her recovery and hears the account of her village’s destruction and enslavement 46.
