Background / History
Muzan is the first demon and the source of the demons opposed by the Demon Slayer Corps. For a thousand years, he has transformed humans into demons while pursuing “perfection” and the ability to conquer sunlight. Kagaya Ubuyashiki describes him as a nearly immortal being whose blood manipulation and regeneration have sustained generations of suffering 9 10.
Yoriichi Tsugikuni previously cut Muzan into pieces, leaving a fear that persists long after Yoriichi’s death. Muzan associates later injuries with that encounter, and both the Sapphire Star’s condemnation and the sight of Yoriichi’s reconstructed body provoke catastrophic panic 29 32 40.
Appearance
- Adult male form: Handsome, with finely sculpted features, pale skin, slender fingers, ruby-red eyes, and curls. He favors tailored suits and maintains an elegant bearing 18 39.
- Child form: A black-haired boy dressed in a smart suit, used while searching books for Blue Spider Lily information 32.
- Adolescent female form: Resembles a delicate girl of sixteen or seventeen wearing a pale-blue kimono; appears during his weakened recovery 34.
- Adult female disguise: A tall, black-haired woman with cool, delicate features and a simple kimono, adopted to disappear into the Entertainment District’s crowds 36.
- Signs of exhaustion: Develops pronounced dark circles after sleepless research and recurring nightmares 32 35.
Personality
Muzan treats humans as inferior creatures and his followers as disposable extensions of his authority. He regards demon deaths less as personal losses than as challenges to his pride, and abandons his human “wife and daughter” as soon as they cease to be useful. His anger can become indiscriminate: after suffering pain through his blood connection to the Lower Ranks, he kills the adoptive parents who enter his room out of concern 18 29.
His polished manners conceal manipulation rather than affection. He flatters Daki to secure access to her information network, then privately dismisses the claim that he came specifically to see her. He also takes considerable pride in his intelligence, congratulating himself on demon fusion and his plan to cripple the Corps through the Swordsmith Village 29 35 48.
When genuinely threatened, his composure collapses into profanity, frantic escape, and exaggerated dependence on his protectors. He alternates between praising Nakime as his savior and blaming her for losses, while repeatedly trying to restore his dignity before Kokushibo. Survival ultimately takes priority over his contempt for humans—even enduring harassment in disguise is preferable to exposing himself to the Sapphire Star 34 36 37 39.
Abilities & Skills
Demon Blood and Creation
Muzan’s blood transforms humans into demons and supplies power to his followers 9 10 18.
- Turns an Asakusa passerby into a violent demon with a concealed drop of blood, creating a distraction for his escape 18.
- Bestows blood upon members of the Twelve Kizuki and regards their strength and lives as gifts belonging to him 18 32.
- Is credited with blood manipulation and the power to create countless Blood Demon Arts 10.
Blood Connection and Mental Control
His blood connects him to subordinate demons, allowing surveillance, communication, and coercion 18 29 32.
- Receives information through other demons’ eyes and senses the severing of their blood connections 18 29 39.
- Exchanges mental reports, commands, and images with Akaza 32 33.
- Makes Akaza’s demon blood surge painfully while reprimanding him 32.
- Detects unspoken remarks from Akaza and Nakime; strikes Akaza with a Mental Storm 34 39.
- Limit: Nezuko is presented as an exceptional demon capable of breaking free of his control 23.
- Vulnerability: Elderseal applied to the fused Lower Ranks disrupts their connection to Muzan and transmits severe pain and weakness to him 29.
Regeneration and Fragmentation
Muzan possesses extraordinary regeneration and can survive the violent fragmentation of his body 10 32.
- Explodes into numerous flesh fragments during his fight with the Sapphire Star; several escape after Akaza intervenes 32.
- Re-forms after another panic-induced explosion upon seeing Yoriichi’s reconstructed body 40.
- Has five brains and seven hearts 32 37.
- Limit: Fragmentation severely weakens him. After his first escape, he relies on Kokushibo’s protection; after the later explosion, he re-forms as a little girl 34 40.
- Unresolved weakness: Conquering sunlight remains a goal rather than an achieved ability 10 35 48.
Shapeshifting and Human Impersonation
Muzan changes his age, sex, appearance, and voice to conceal his identity 32 34 36.
- Maintains a convincing identity as a human husband and father in Asakusa 18.
- Uses a child identity while researching the Blue Spider Lily 32.
- Alters his bones, skin, and clothing when transforming into a woman in the Entertainment District 36.
- Returns to his adult male form once he believes he has reached safety 37.
Biological Weapons
Muzan produces offensive and defensive structures from his body or demon blood 32 48.
- Fires bone spikes capable of piercing steel plates 32.
- Forms thorned whips into a shield against the Sapphire Star’s blade 32.
- Uses dark-red barbed thorns to impale and suspend Nameless Hundred Faces 48.
- Kills Hundred Faces by firing demon blood power through his skull 48.
- Limit: His bone spikes cannot penetrate the Sapphire Star’s Fatalis Armor; her Flash Bomb and Shock Trap successfully blind and immobilize him 32.
Demon Fusion
Muzan combines demons into composite weapons using his blood 29 37.
| Creation | Components | Purpose and Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Fused Lower Rank demon | Rokuro, Byōga, and Kamanué | Muzan expects the fused body to handle a lone Hashira. The Sapphire Star disables its regeneration with a Nergigante spike and takes its severed head 29. |
| Nameless Hundred Faces | Demons with mental Blood Demon Arts gathered by Akaza | Created as a costly, unstable weapon against the Sapphire Star. Later receives Yoriichi’s remains as a body 34 37 40. |
- Limit: Creating Hundred Faces does not give Muzan a full understanding of its ability. Its summoned beings cannot simply be commanded, and its power deteriorates after the Mount Dayue incident 45 48.
Relationships
- Sapphire Star — Enemy whose strength repeatedly forces him to flee. Her words evoke Yoriichi, and her pursuit drives Muzan to develop Nameless Hundred Faces 32 34 37.
- Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Former opponent and enduring source of terror. Even Yoriichi’s remains and reconstructed appearance trigger panic 29 40.
- Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Leader of the organization dedicated to ending Muzan’s thousand-year reign of suffering; regards Muzan as the Ubuyashiki family’s stain 10 29.
- Tanjiro Kamado — Enemy who confronts him in Asakusa. Muzan specifically orders Akaza to kill Tanjiro, identifying him by his hanafuda earrings 18 32.
- Akaza — Upper Rank Three and frequently reprimanded subordinate. Saves Muzan’s escaping fragments, then gathers mental-ability demons under his orders 32 33 34 37.
- Nakime — Controls the Infinity Castle and provides Muzan with escape routes, concealment, and repairs. He depends on her despite repeatedly directing his anger at her 36 37 39 48.
- Kokushibo — Upper Rank One, trusted protector, and retriever of Yoriichi’s remains. Muzan considers him indispensable to his security 34 39 40.
- Daki and Gyutaro — Upper Rank Six siblings. Muzan exploits Daki’s devotion to advance his research and blames Nakime when both siblings are killed 35 39.
- Nameless Hundred Faces — Fusion weapon Muzan initially protects as a valuable creation, then kills after its limitations frustrate his expectations 37 40 45 48.
- Human cover families — Disposable identities rather than genuine attachments: he abandons his wife and daughter and later murders his adoptive parents 18 29.
