Appearance
- Pale skin with dark-red tattoos, described as resembling bloody streaks 32.
- Golden eyes bearing “Upper Rank” and “Three” lettering during the confrontation with the Sapphire Star 33.
- Concealable rank markings: he removes the lettering and changes his eyes to ordinary dark brown when ordered to disguise himself 33.
- His eyes are later described as blood-red during his hostile encounter with Doma 48.
Personality
Akaza prizes powerful opponents and prolonged combat. He admires Kyojuro Rengoku’s resolve, offers him demonhood as a path to eternal martial mastery, and becomes genuinely excited when the Ancient Potion allows Rengoku to fight beyond his previous limits. His admiration nevertheless coexists with contempt for human mortality: once Rengoku weakens, Akaza mocks the temporary nature of his strength 31.
His appetite for battle can override caution. Although the Sapphire Star’s Fighting Spirit frightens him, he longs to challenge her and nearly turns back during his escape despite Muzan’s explicit prohibition. Muzan’s threats ultimately force him into submission. Toward Doma, Akaza is openly contemptuous, using his name as an insulting disguise and later knocking off his jaw without warning 33 34 48.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Physical Strength
- Fights barehanded with punches and fist blasts; one strike punches through Rengoku’s chest 31.
- Uses exceptional speed, reflexes, and battle instincts to exploit openings between sword attacks 31.
- Targets vulnerable areas deliberately, shattering Rengoku’s sword wrist and tearing flesh beneath his ribs 31.
- Knocks Doma’s entire lower jaw off with a backhanded slap 48.
Destructive Death
- Annihilation Style: releases dark-red fist blasts powerful enough to clash with Rengoku’s enhanced Ninth Form: Purgatory. Their collision scatters the remaining train wreckage 31.
- Fighting Spirit–charged interception: strikes the side of the Sapphire Star’s Fatalis Blade, shifting its trajectory by roughly an inch. He cannot overpower the hunter, but the deflection allows several fragments of Muzan to escape 32.
- “Destruction... Scattered Lotus Blossoms”: announces an apparent ultimate Blood Demon Art accompanied by a luminous, ice-blue lotus-patterned circle. The display serves as a distraction for his escape rather than a completed attack 33.
Demonic Body and Regeneration
- Possesses a body described as harder than fine steel, though potion-enhanced Rengoku still inflicts charred, bone-deep cuts 31.
- His continuing regeneration gives him an advantage over Rengoku, whose medicinal healing consumes finite vitality 31.
- Sunlight remains a decisive weakness: dawn burns his skin and forces him to abandon the Mugen Train battle 31.
- Muzan can suppress him through demon blood, causing severe internal pain and compelling obedience 32 33.
Concealment and Escape
- Can hide the rank inscriptions in his eyes to obscure his identity 33.
- Attempts to erase his trail by removing blood traces and destroying organisms along his route; these measures fail to stop the Sapphire Star’s Scoutflies 32 34.
- Uses the false Doma identity and an elaborate attack feint to gain a head start, but still requires extraction into the Infinity Castle to end the pursuit 33 34.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mugen Train Battle
Akaza arrives after Lower Rank One’s defeat and gravely wounds Rengoku, who fights to protect the passengers and the young Demon Slayers. Rather than immediately finishing him, Akaza invites Rengoku to become a demon 31.
Rengoku swallows the Sapphire Star’s Ancient Potion, rapidly recovers, and renews the battle with unprecedented strength. Akaza initially loses ground, then adapts and exploits the exhaustion accompanying Rengoku’s borrowed vitality. Sunrise interrupts the fight; Akaza retreats, leaving Rengoku to collapse after the potion’s effects fade 31.
The Sapphire Star’s Pursuit
Muzan reprimands Akaza for failing to kill anyone, finding no Blue Spider Lily clues, and fleeing from sunlight. He also orders Akaza to deal with the pursuer tracking him. Despite Akaza’s attempts to erase his trail, the Sapphire Star reaches Muzan’s residence, mistakenly identifies Muzan as Akaza, and attacks 32.
When Muzan explodes into flesh fragments to escape, Akaza arrives and deflects the hunter’s blade, saving several pieces. The Sapphire Star then confronts him without recognizing his identity. Muzan orders him to hide his rank and flee, so Akaza claims to be a reserve Kizuki named Doma and stages an apparent ultimate attack before running 32 33.
Akaza nearly abandons his escape to fight, but Muzan pulls him into the Infinity Castle. Tengen Uzui later explains the mistaken identities to the Sapphire Star: her “Akaza” was Muzan, and her “Doma” was the real Akaza 34 38.
Creation of Nameless Hundred Faces
After the pursuit, Muzan orders Akaza to gather every demon he can find with mind-affecting Blood Demon Arts, including illusions, mind control, and mind reading. The captured demons become the materials Muzan forcibly fuses into Nameless Hundred Faces 34 37.
Swordsmith Village Deployment
At an Upper Rank gathering, Akaza strikes Doma and receives a warning from Kokushibo against pointless conflict outside a rank replacement blood battle. After killing Nameless Hundred Faces, Muzan orders the Upper Ranks to accompany Gyokko in destroying the Swordsmith Village. Akaza carries Hundred Faces’s ruined body over his shoulder and follows Gyokko through the teleportation 48.
Relationships
- Muzan Kibutsuji — Master. Akaza protects his escape, but remains subject to his blood-based punishments, threats, and orders 32 33 34.
- Kyojuro Rengoku — Enemy and admired opponent. Akaza offers him demonhood and regrets sunlight ending their unusually exhilarating fight 31.
- Sapphire Star — Pursuer and desired opponent. Her strength inspires both fear and intense excitement; Muzan forbids him from fighting her 32 33 34.
- Doma — Fellow Upper Rank and target of hostility. Akaza disparages him while impersonating him and later knocks off his jaw 33 48.
- Kokushibo — Upper Rank One. He guards Muzan after the escape and later reprimands Akaza for attacking Doma 34 48.
- Nameless Hundred Faces — Fusion demon created from Akaza’s captives. Akaza later transports his corpse for the Swordsmith Village attack 37 48.
