Background / History

Tanjiro trained in Water Breathing under Sakonji Urokodaki before taking the Demon Slayer Corps’ Final Selection at Mount Fujikasane. He already understood the Corps’ purpose, Muzan Kibutsuji’s role in creating demons, and the use of Nichirin Blades and sunlight to kill them 8 9.

His younger sister, Nezuko, became a demon. Tanjiro states that they promised she would never eat anyone from the day of her transformation; he carries her in a wooden box and defends her right to live alongside him 22 23.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Described as black-haired, with crimson eyes 6 30.
  • Forehead mark: Bears an unusual scar, later described as flame-shaped 9 18 22.
  • Clothing: Wears a checkered haori over his Demon Slayer Corps uniform 11.
  • Carried box: Travels with a wooden backpack or box housing Nezuko 22 30.

Personality

Tanjiro is courteous and openly grateful. Despite fear and injuries, he bows deeply to thank the Sapphire Star for saving him, and he later worries that her necklace is too valuable to accept 6 30. His compassion also affects his conduct against enemies: in Asakusa, he stops his raised blade upon noticing Muzan’s apparently human wife and daughter 18.

Protecting others can override his fear or exhaustion. He breaks his restraints to defend Nezuko from Sanemi, then comforts her through the temptation of rare blood. When he discovers Daki attacking Koinatsu, his anger at the threat to an innocent woman overwhelms his fear of an Upper Rank 23 39.

He is diligent in training and willing to accept responsibility. He practices breathing until he collapses, continues refining Total Concentration: Constant, and plans a personal apology to the swordsmiths after damage to his blade 24 30 41.

Abilities & Skills

Water Breathing

Tanjiro’s swordsmanship is grounded in the Water Breathing taught by Urokodaki 9.

  • Second Form: Water Wheel — Cuts through the Mugen Train’s roof to attack Enmu 30.
  • Fourth Form: Striking Tide — Clashes with Daki’s regenerating sashes at Kyogoku House 39.
  • Limits against Upper Ranks — Daki remains largely untroubled by his attacks, while he becomes breathless and his blade develops chips 39.

Hinokami Kagura

  • Blue Heaven — Produces a scorching vortex from his Nichirin Blade during the battle against Enmu’s train body 30.
  • A separate scorching power surge at Mount Natagumo draws the Sapphire Star’s attention, though that passage does not name the technique responsible 22.

Total Concentration: Constant

Tanjiro learns to keep his breathing technique active continuously rather than only during individual attacks 24 30.

  • Maintains a long, steady rhythm while unconscious and later while eating 24.
  • Shows improved physical stability, barely swaying when the Sapphire Star gives him a heavy pat on the shoulder 30.
  • Acknowledges that he still needs to improve despite having mastered the technique 30.

Physical Strength and Combat Judgment

  • Breaks tough restraints while badly injured and strikes Sanemi’s chest with his forehead, forcing the Wind Hashira backward 23.
  • Unconsciously adjusts his posture and rolls to soften his fall when he collapses during training 24.
  • Identifies Daki’s sashes as the means by which she absorbs people without leaving blood behind 39.
  • Exploits Inosuke’s opening to sever Enmu’s exposed spine inside the locomotive 30.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — His primary weapon. He selects a medium-sized piece of tamahagane with flowing-water markings that appears compatible with his breathing; Haganezuka forges his sword 11 39.
  • Sleep Resistance Charm — A necklace given by the Sapphire Star before the Mugen Train mission. It counters Enmu’s sleep-inducing Blood Demon Art and also protects nearby companions, including Rengoku and Inosuke 30.
  • Wooden box/backpack — Carries Nezuko during travel. The box is secured with heavy chains during their trial 23 30.
  • Kasugai Crow — Received upon becoming an official Corps swordsman; it calls his full name upon landing on his shoulder 11.
  • Sealed Lower Rank demon head — Temporarily entrusted to him at Kagaya’s suggestion. The Sapphire Star preserved the fused Lower Ranks’ head with a Nergigante spike; Tanjiro sends it to Tamayo through Chachamaru as a research sample 29 30.

Relationships

  • Nezuko Kamado — Younger sister and traveling companion. Each protects the other: she shields him at Mount Natagumo, and he defends and reassures her during their trial 22 23.
  • Sakonji Urokodaki — Master who taught him Water Breathing 8 9.
  • Sapphire Star — Rescuer, supporter, and later joint supervisor. She testifies for Nezuko, heals Tanjiro’s injuries, and gives him the Sleep Resistance Charm 6 23 30.
  • Giyu Tomioka — Protects Nezuko from execution and is appointed to supervise the siblings alongside the Sapphire Star 22 23.
  • Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira — Fellow Final Selection survivors and recurring mission companions. They recover and train with Tanjiro at the Butterfly Mansion 9 11 24 30 38.
  • Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader who permits the siblings to continue their duties and arranges for Tanjiro to receive the preserved demon head 23 29 30.
  • Tamayo — Research contact. Tanjiro interprets Kagaya’s gift as support for their contact and sends her the demon head through Chachamaru 30.
  • Kyojuro Rengoku — Senior swordsman and Mugen Train ally. Tanjiro desperately seeks the Sapphire Star’s help when Rengoku returns critically wounded 30 31.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa — Opponent during Nezuko’s trial. Tanjiro physically intervenes when Sanemi attacks her box 23.
  • Haganezuka — His swordsmith. Tanjiro defends his craftsmanship against Daki’s insult and later resolves to apologize personally over the damaged blade 39 41.
  • Tengen Uzui — Leads Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke’s undercover investigation in the Entertainment District 38.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Final Selection

The Sapphire Star saves Tanjiro from the Hand Demon. Awed by her strength, he initially assumes she is a Hashira. He subsequently helps her understand Mount Fujikasane and explains demons and the Corps while descending the mountain with Zenitsu and Inosuke 6 8 9.

After Final Selection ends early, Tanjiro becomes an official swordsman, chooses his sword’s ore, and leaves to gain experience independently 8 11.

Asakusa

Tanjiro encounters Muzan while the demon progenitor is accompanied by a human wife and daughter. His hesitation to endanger them gives Muzan an opportunity to transform a passerby into a demon, cause chaos, and escape 18.

Mount Natagumo and the Siblings’ Trial

Following an explosive power surge, Tanjiro is found gravely wounded beside Nezuko after Giyu defeats Rui. Shinobu incapacitates him with a poisoned needle, and the Kakushi take both siblings to headquarters 22.

At their trial, Tanjiro insists that Nezuko has never eaten anyone. He breaks free to stop Sanemi’s attack and helps Nezuko resist Sanemi’s rare blood through repeated reassurance. Kagaya allows them to continue demon-slaying under Giyu and the Sapphire Star’s joint supervision 23.

Butterfly Mansion Rehabilitation

During recovery, Tanjiro undergoes closely monitored breathing exercises. Training to exhaustion leads to an unconsciously sustained rhythm, followed by his reported mastery of Total Concentration: Constant before the next mission 24 30.

Mugen Train

The Sapphire Star’s charm prevents Enmu’s sleep attack from disabling Tanjiro and nearby allies. Tanjiro fights alongside Zenitsu, Inosuke, Rengoku, and Nezuko, ultimately cutting through Enmu’s spine inside the locomotive 30.

After Akaza’s attack leaves Rengoku critically wounded, Tanjiro pleads for the Sapphire Star to save him. He explains how her Ancient Potion restored Rengoku long enough to resume fighting, before that borrowed vitality faded 31.

Journey to the Swordsmith Village

Following Haganezuka’s furious pursuit over the damaged blade, Tanjiro decides to visit the Swordsmith Village to apologize and consult the smiths about swords. He has already arrived there when Kagaya orders the Hashira and the Sapphire Star to follow 41 46.
