Background / History

Harry was raised by his aunt and uncle. Hagrid describes their treatment of him as very poor, contrasting his home life with Su Er’s loving adoptive family 38.

His name is already widely recognized when he reaches Hogwarts: its announcement during the Sorting Ceremony prompts discussion across all four house tables. The Sorting Hat quickly places him in Gryffindor, whose students welcome him with enthusiastic cheering 15.

Harry is the son of James and Lily Potter, whose family is commemorated by a statue in Godric’s Hollow. His parents fought Voldemort under Dumbledore’s leadership after graduating from Hogwarts. Voldemort eventually entered their home and killed them while they tried to protect Harry 51 245 275 377.

His July 31 birthday connects him to Trelawney’s prophecy concerning a child born at the end of July who could defeat the Dark Lord. Dumbledore states that Voldemort chose Harry and that Voldemort’s followers also regard him as the child concerned 198 326.

Lily’s sacrifice left ancient protective magic on Harry. Dumbledore explains that its protection depends on Harry staying with relatives who share his blood and prevents Voldemort from locating him through that magic. This is why Dumbledore initially refuses Sirius’s request to take Harry away from the Dursleys during the summer holidays 253 254. Sirius later buys the neighboring house and prepares a room for him, allowing Harry to spend his days there while continuing to sleep at the Dursleys’ home 289 340.

Harry is also a living Horcrux carrying part of Voldemort’s soul. Dumbledore discusses this condition with Su Er after Harry has left the room; the discussion is not presented as something Harry himself hears 377. The connection manifests through painful scar reactions and visions associated with Voldemort and his other soul containers 376 570.

Appearance

  • Hair: Thick, black, bowl-cut hair; a lock on top resists his efforts to flatten it 13 22 288 377.
  • Face: Thin, with a lightning-shaped scar partly visible beneath his bangs 13.
  • Eyes: The same green as his mother’s 377.
  • Glasses: Round-rimmed 13.
  • Family resemblance: Strongly resembles James Potter. Kingsley remarks on the resemblance when helping collect him from the Dursleys 377 517.

Personality

Harry stands up to Malfoy, telling him to leave the train compartment rather than tolerating his bullying. His willingness to confront him also leads to impulsive decisions, including accepting a midnight challenge that turns out to be a trap 13 24 25.

He is friendly and helpful toward Su Er, offering to contact the Weasley twins and following through. Despite being intimidated by Snape after the troll incident, he speaks up to credit Su Er and Hermione with saving him and Ron 31 33 34.

His Quidditch role brings considerable anxiety. He repeatedly asks Su Er to keep his position secret, becomes flustered when other Gryffindors already know about it, and appears sleep-deprived before his first match 33 36.

Harry is generous toward people he likes. During an outing with Angel, he buys her a large assortment of snacks and magical toys 172. He also places considerable emotional value on ordinary pleasures enjoyed without the Dursleys’ interference: an amusement-park birthday, hamburgers, and food he can eat without Dudley taking it are deeply meaningful to him 173.

His longing for a caring family becomes especially apparent after he learns that Sirius is his godfather. The revelation brings tears to his eyes, and he quickly accepts Sirius as family. Before their first Christmas together, he repeatedly asks his friends whether his clothes look presentable and worries about his unruly hair 277 286 288.

Harry can become highly emotional when he feels betrayed, excluded, or afraid for someone close to him. During his dispute with Ron over becoming a Champion, he protests that he never wanted the fame and danger that dominate his life, then apologizes to Su Er and Hermione for venting at them 412. He later angrily challenges his friends and the adults around him for withholding information about Voldemort 520 521. When he believes Sirius is being tortured, his fear overwhelms his ability to examine the inconsistencies Hermione points out 607.

Despite his anger, he remains capable of reconsidering his behavior. After Su Er urges him to approach Ron as a friend rather than an opponent, Harry agrees to try speaking to him 413. He also initially objects to involving others in the journey to the Ministry, regarding the danger as his own responsibility 610.

Abilities & Skills

Broomstick Flying

  • Performs a controlled dive and abrupt stop while approaching Su Er at the Quidditch pitch 33.
  • Trains under Wood as Gryffindor’s Seeker 33.
  • Holds onto his broom with one hand during its uncontrolled movements and climbs back aboard after the disturbance is interrupted 37.
  • Trains successfully with a Firebolt, whose performance gives Wood considerable confidence in Gryffindor’s Quidditch prospects 300 304.
  • Uses his flying skill against a Hungarian Horntail during the Triwizard Tournament. He mounts his summoned Firebolt, evades the dragon’s long jet of flame, and draws praise from Ludo Bagman for his maneuvers 433.

Survival Under Attack

  • Dodges the troll’s club alongside Ron by diving and rolling 30.
  • Follows Su Er’s timing instructions during the rescue; the decisive magic is performed by Su Er and Hermione, not Harry 30 31.
  • Remains composed after Malfoy’s attack exposes him beneath his Invisibility Cloak, countering with Stunning Spells and continuing the duel 638.
  • Is not invulnerable despite his growing abilities. Ron later saves his life during the fighting at Hogwarts and is seriously injured in doing so 659.

Academic Magic

  • Makes exceptionally rapid academic progress while using the enchanted diary as a source of written advice 144.
  • Proposes an improved casting gesture in Charms. Flitwick praises the method and adapts it to other spells; its advantage is faster casting at the cost of reduced magical power 144.
  • Earns ten Gryffindor points from McGonagall for outstanding work in Transfiguration 144.
  • Cannot master the Bubble-Head Charm in the single night remaining before the Triwizard Tournament’s second task, despite seeking Su Er’s advice 462.

Defensive and Combat Magic

  • Patronus Charm: Studies with Lupin and receives additional private training from Sirius. He publicly casts the charm when Malfoy and his companions impersonate Dementors during a Quidditch match 275 313.
  • Corporeal Patronus: Produces a silver stag. He demonstrates it before Zacharias and the other students to establish his qualifications to teach defensive magic 552.
  • Patronus communication: Learns from Su Er, teaching under the name Mr. Aibo, how to transmit messages through a complete Patronus. He quickly masters the technique, which is resistant to surveillance by most dark magic 580.
  • Disarming Charm: Is particularly proficient with the spell. During his later duel with Malfoy, his Disarming Charm knocks Malfoy against a wall and sends Malfoy’s wand into Harry’s hand, although Malfoy deliberately allows that final attack to land 580 638.
  • Shield Charm: Learns through the Defence Against Dark Magic Group and eventually masters nonverbal casting under Su Er’s guidance 632 633.
  • Stunning Spell: Uses the spell repeatedly in his corridor duel with Malfoy, including to counter an incoming Blasting Curse 638.
  • Impediment Jinx: Casts it against a large Blast-Ended Skrewt while Su Er attacks the creature’s exposed abdomen 477.

Occlumency

  • Is advised by Su Er to take Occlumency seriously because it may protect his friends and family 380.
  • Studies with Snape for a term, but emerges pale and staggering from a later assessment. Sirius subsequently states that he will ask Dumbledore to let him take over Harry’s training 533 534.
  • Has still made little progress when Su Er later questions him about the subject 577.

Protective Magic and Soul Connection

  • Lily’s blood protection: Benefits from ancient magic left by his mother. Dumbledore explains that living with blood relatives sustains its protective effect and conceals him from Voldemort 254.
  • Scar reactions: Experiences severe pain in response to intense changes connected with Voldemort. He collapses when Dumbledore destroys a Horcrux cup; Dumbledore explains that the pain reflects powerful fluctuations in Riddle’s emotions 376.
  • Visions: Sees a frightening scene involving Voldemort, a man called Barty, and an old man who falls to the floor. He later sees Arthur Weasley’s attack from a snake’s perspective 340 570.
  • Limitations: These experiences are involuntary and emotionally destabilizing rather than reliable, controlled reconnaissance. His later vision of Sirius being tortured drives him toward the Ministry despite Hermione’s doubts 607.
  • Blood used in Voldemort’s resurrection: Voldemort’s restored body incorporates Harry’s blood and thereby absorbs power from the ancient magic Lily left on him 491.

Their friendship is strained after Harry becomes a Triwizard Champion; Su Er explains Ron’s insecurity about being overshadowed, while Harry feels betrayed and misunderstood 412 413. Ron is the person Harry must retrieve during the second task 467. During the later battle at Hogwarts, Ron saves Harry’s life and is left badly injured 659.
  • Su Er Bones Ellison — Rescuer and developing friend. Harry calls him his friend when Wood questions his presence at the pitch, although the narration notes that they have had little direct contact 30 33. Their relationship later includes birthday hospitality, advice about seeking Dumbledore’s help, the gift of the Marauder’s Map, and guidance on conflicts with Ron 173 278 342 412 413. Su Er teaches him Patronus communication while disguised as Mr. Aibo and later becomes his Defence Against Dark Magic professor 580 632 633. Harry also recalls a train duel in which he and Ron lost to Su Er, using the private memory to verify Su Er’s identity 517.
  • Hermione Granger — Fellow Gryffindor who accompanies the midnight outing, helps rescue him from the troll, and joins the investigation into Nicolas Flamel 24 30 38 43. She supports him through later difficulties but also challenges his conclusions, particularly when his fear for Sirius leads him to trust a troubling vision without sufficient verification 412 520 607. She organizes the practical preparations for the journey to the Ministry 610.
  • Neville Longbottom — Fellow Gryffindor involved in the midnight outing. Harry also suggests inviting Neville and Su Er to Hagrid’s hut 22 24. Neville later insists on helping with the Ministry expedition and offers to use the Disillusionment Charm alongside Hannah 610.

  • Angel Ellison — Su Er’s younger sister, whom Harry treats generously during their outing by buying snacks and magical toys 172.
  • Severus Snape — Intimidating teacher whom Harry suspects of wrongdoing; during the broom incident, Su Er observes Snape casting a countercurse 31 36 37. Later teaches Harry Occlumency, with their lessons and assessment remaining painful and antagonistic. Sirius objects to Snape’s treatment of Harry and proposes taking over the training 412 533 534.
  • Albus Dumbledore — A protective elder whose plans concerning Harry emphasize love, responsibility, and his eventual confrontation with Voldemort 161 198. Maintains the requirement that Harry return to his blood relatives despite Sirius’s objections 253 254. Harry later resents being kept uninformed, while Dumbledore continues coordinating his protection and preparing contingencies that depend on his return to Hogwarts 520 521 650 652.
  • Sirius Black — Harry’s godfather and one of James’s closest friends. After Sirius is cleared, Harry gains an openly acknowledged family bond and accepts him wholeheartedly 260 275 277 286. Sirius provides emotional support, private training, and a neighboring home, while Harry eagerly seeks opportunities to see him 289 313 470. Fear for Sirius later becomes the driving force behind Harry’s attempt to reach the Ministry 607 610.
  • Remus Lupin — One of James’s closest friends and Harry’s Patronus instructor. Dumbledore asks him to watch over Harry because of the prophecy and the danger from Voldemort’s followers 198 275. He also helps mediate between Sirius and Snape 533.

  • The Dursley family — His aunt, uncle, and cousin Dudley, with whom he has little emotional bond. Their hostility extends to restricting Hedwig’s freedom and giving Harry inferior food and unwanted castoffs at Christmas 75 286 288. Sirius’s arrival changes the balance of power, frightening Vernon and Dudley and giving Harry a refuge next door 289 340.
  • Hedwig — His owl. Harry apologizes for keeping her confined after Vernon nearly shoots her when she is allowed outside 75.
