Background / History
Childhood and Friendship with Su Er
Hermione grows up next door to the Ellison family. Her friendship with Su Er begins in first grade, when he intervenes after several children surround and tease her. Her earnestness and habit of reporting rule-breaking leave her unpopular with classmates, while Su Er becomes her close companion and occasionally borrows her homework 1 2 23.
The Granger and Ellison families spend time together, including a zoo outing arranged after Su Er angers Hermione by commenting on her prominent front teeth. Both mothers later exchange knowing smiles while watching the children bicker during their school-supply shopping 2 9.
Discovery of Magic
When invited to Hogwarts, Hermione initially fears that attending will separate her from Su Er, with whom she had expected to attend Eton College. She promises to visit him during every holiday before learning that he has also received a Hogwarts letter 4.
Hermione seeks information from Professor McGonagall and eagerly prepares for the magical world. In Diagon Alley, she obtains her wand, buys more books than the required list demands, and takes a liking to a ginger cat she cannot afford 5 8 9.
Her early spell practice repeatedly damages household locks. After Ministry visitors warn the prospective first-years against using magic privately, she puts away her wand and concentrates on memorizing books—including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She intends to excel in every Hogwarts subject 10 11.
First Term at Hogwarts
On the Hogwarts Express, Hermione worries that the Sorting Ceremony will be an examination and searches her books for answers. She meets Cedric Diggory and Neville Longbottom; while helping search for Neville’s toad, she encounters Malfoy, who insults her with a blood-status slur. Su Er demands an apology and freezes him with Immobulus 12 13.
Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor, although she later says she had wanted Ravenclaw. Su Er’s placement in Hufflepuff does not prevent them from meeting for meals, library sessions, and spell practice 15 20 22.
Her attempt to stop Harry and Ron from attending Malfoy’s midnight duel draws her into their nighttime excursion. The group eventually discovers a three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor in the forbidden Fourth-Floor Corridor. Hermione is more excited by successfully casting Alohomora than by the guarded mystery, and afterward persuades Su Er to study the advanced Switching Spell with her 23 24 25.
Halloween Troll Encounter
On Halloween, Su Er searches for Hermione after learning that she has missed afternoon lessons. Hermione spots him, follows out of curiosity, and finds him searching the girls’ bathroom for her. While returning toward the feast, they encounter Quirrell and an approaching troll 29.
After hiding from the creature, they hear Harry and Ron in danger and return to help. Su Er levitates the troll’s club while Hermione transforms the floor beneath it, trapping its feet. He then releases the club, knocking the troll unconscious 30.
When questioned by the professors, Hermione claims that she thought she could handle the troll, despite having first explained that she and Su Er encountered it while trying to leave. McGonagall praises their bravery and clever Transfiguration, awarding twenty points each to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. The encounter also brings Hermione closer to Harry and Ron 31.
Warmth Bottles and the Guarded Trapdoor
During a library session, Hermione discovers a rune-covered fire spell depicting blue flames inside a bottle. She and Su Er work on its translation and successfully test the Bluebell Flames Charm. Her observation that the bottle makes a useful hand warmer inspires Su Er’s plan to sell Warmth Bottles for Christmas-present money 32 33.
Hermione helps preserve access to the spellbook by borrowing it for a month and accompanies Su Er when he meets Fred and George to review the business. The twins report selling 326 bottles for 249 Galleons before demand declines as students learn the charm themselves 34 36.
Although Hermione initially doubts that Snape intends to steal the treasure behind the three-headed dog, she later sets his robes alight during Harry’s dangerous broom malfunction. While moving through the stands, she also knocks Quirrell forward. Afterward, she questions Hagrid about Snape and joins the search for information about Nicolas Flamel 36 37 38 39.
Christmas Holiday
Hermione becomes frustrated when Su Er’s secret gift preparations keep him away for days. Following him to the seventh floor leads to questions about a disappearing room, then a chase that ends with her clinging to him in front of McGonagall. Her embarrassment causes her to avoid him afterward 40 41 42.
On the journey home, Su Er gives her the ginger cat she admired in Diagon Alley. Hermione reveals that she had planned to buy him during Christmas, accepts the gift, and names him Crookshanks 44.
During a later holiday outing, Hermione becomes tipsy after drinking spiked mulled wine. Su Er takes her home by taxi; both fall asleep, and Mrs. Granger finds them holding one another when they arrive 47.
The Philosopher’s Stone and Hagrid’s Dragon
After Christmas, Su Er explains Nicolas Flamel’s connection to the Philosopher’s Stone and its ability to produce the Elixir of Life. Hermione finds a library book confirming Flamel’s achievement and concludes that Snape is trying to steal the Stone. Su Er doubts her conclusion and privately resolves to prevent her from exploring the fourth-floor corridor 55.
Her suspicion extends to preparing a defensive plan for Harry: she tells Su Er to use Locomotor Mortis if Snape appears ready to harm him. Su Er questions whether they could hit Snape at all and points out that Dumbledore is present 60.
While visiting Hagrid, Hermione notices a dragon egg in his fireplace. She warns him that keeping dragons is illegal but agrees, reluctantly, not to tell the professors. She gathers reference books while Su Er identifies the egg as a Norwegian Ridgeback. After witnessing its hatching, she warns Hagrid that the dragon’s rapid growth will soon make his house inadequate 68 70.
Second Year and the Chamber of Secrets
During second-year Herbology, Hermione has already memorized the required textbook and correctly explains Mandrakes’ restorative properties 85.
Su Er eventually brings her into the Room of Requirement to brew Polyjuice Potion in secret. She is annoyed that he has known about the room for a year without telling her, but accepts his explanation and joins him in preparing the ingredients. She carefully follows the brewing instructions through the addition of powdered bicorn horn and the final simmering stage 104 106.
The Polyjuice investigation goes poorly for Hermione, leaving her with black cat ears and a black tail. This temporary potion accident is distinct from the genuine Animagus transformation she later achieves. While visiting her, Su Er offers to share notes from Flitwick’s lessons and teach her the Patronus Charm, then provokes her by touching her cat ears 118 315.
Hermione remains worried about the basilisk when Dumbledore is due to leave Hogwarts and asks Su Er to help interpret the headmaster’s parting words about loyalty and receiving help at the school. She is not petrified during the crisis; Su Er undergoes that experience in her place. By the end of the school year, she is comfortable hugging his arm and holding his hand in front of their friends 154 160 162.
Third Year and Her Relationship with Su Er
During the summer before returning to Hogwarts, Hermione participates in volunteer dental work in Africa. On her return, Su Er’s surprise visit startles her into screaming and shutting the door in his face. Their subsequent argument leads Mrs. Granger to misinterpret an overheard conversation, leaving Hermione embarrassed enough to take refuge at the Ellisons’ house 176.
Her parents continue teasing her about dating Su Er. At school, she and Ron also quarrel over Crookshanks’ repeated attempts to get at Scabbers, which force Ron to carry his rat around for protection 181 201.
Hermione visits Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop with Su Er, where she prevents him from recording Percy and Penelope Clearwater. Examining his Remembrall instead exposes images already stored in it, prompting her to question what he recorded and whether anyone else has seen it 224.
She assists Su Er in entering the passage beneath the Whomping Willow by transfiguring a mouse and directing it to touch the tree’s immobilizing knot. She later accompanies him and the Weasley twins into danger in the Forbidden Forest, using fire to help force a route through attacking spiders 244 270.
Following Su Er’s confession, the two return home with their fingers intertwined, and their parents recognize that they have become a couple 293.
Time-Turner Crisis
Hermione’s determination to excel in every subject produces an increasingly burdensome workload. Divination is a particular source of frustration: she cannot justify predicting disasters from tea leaves or writing that her friends will suffer misfortune merely to satisfy Trelawney 300.
A Time-Turner accident leaves her lost in time, while other people begin losing their memories of her. Harry and McGonagall fail to remember her, and even Su Er’s recollection becomes unstable enough that he writes her name on his palm. Dumbledore warns that complete erasure from memory would mean that Hermione no longer exists in the world and prepares a way for Su Er to search for her 302 303.
Su Er eventually finds her repeating the same actions in a separate space within the Library. A book that responds to her page-turning in both spaces provides the connection he needs; he times his spells to break it 311.
Hermione returns safely. McGonagall explains Su Er’s intervention and confiscates her Time-Turner, which is not returned. Hermione kisses him in gratitude and subsequently drops several electives, including Divination, making her daily workload substantially easier 313 318.
Becoming an Animagus
Hermione prepares for Animagus transformation during her third year, including keeping a mandrake leaf beneath her tongue. By the time Lupin notices her practice, she has reached the stage of waiting for a thunderstorm. He warns that the magic is too dangerous for a third-year, while Sirius praises the precision of her incantation and wand movements 210 285.
She completes her first transformation during a thunderstorm, emerging from her robes as a black cat. Sirius and Lupin are present, and Su Er carries her back to the castle. In the Room of Requirement, she changes back without realizing that her clothing was left behind, causing considerable embarrassment. The next morning, she gives Su Er a potion for external injuries and demands that he forget the incident 315.
Summer Experiences and House-Elf Advocacy
During the following summer, Hermione accompanies Su Er and Hagrid on a visit to the Scamander family in Dorset. There she sees an Antipodean Opaleye and learns about its rescue from poachers and its forthcoming hatchlings 333 337.
At the Quidditch World Cup campsite, she and Su Er walk hand in hand while fetching water. She tells him that she considers him better-looking than Krum, then hurries ahead when he asks her to repeat it. During the match’s opening entertainment, she is contemptuous of Harry and Ron’s susceptibility to Veela enchantment and pleased that Su Er remains composed 353 359.
Back at Hogwarts, Hermione researches house-elf treatment and founds S.P.E.W., seeking wages, better working conditions, and greater rights for house-elves. Percy agrees to join and help find Ministry supporters, and Su Er also joins while resolving to acquaint her with the elves’ own views 384.
Her visit to the Hogwarts Kitchen exposes the differences between Dobby, who values freedom, and traditional elves such as Kleis, who regards service to wizards as a deeply rooted duty. These encounters do not make her abandon her position: she later continues trying to pay Kleis until he begins hiding from her 440 503.
Triwizard Tournament and Christmas Ball
When Su Er disappears without warning for more than half a month, Hermione is frightened. After his return, she asks him to leave a note if anything similar happens again, and he promises to do so. He tells her about meeting Helga Hufflepuff and demonstrates nonverbal wandless Transfiguration; Hermione’s subsequent attempt to levitate the wooden tray ends with it broken in two 393.
Hermione worries about the Triwizard champions when Hagrid reveals that the First Task involves dragons. During this period, she is also struck by Malfoy’s Densaugeo spell in a confrontation arising from Slytherin harassment of Harry 413 415.
Rita Skeeter publishes speculation about a supposed romantic conflict involving Hermione, Su Er, Harry, and Miss Delacour. Su Er rejects the claims as fabrication, while Hermione continues her house-elf advocacy and discusses her organization with Pheobe 437 438.
Hermione helps Neville rehearse an invitation to Hannah before accepting Su Er’s public invitation to the Christmas ball. She and Su Er practice their dance movements and dance together at the event. After Hermione catches a beetle, Su Er identifies it as Rita Skeeter; Hermione deduces that Rita is an unregistered Animagus. During their private conversation afterward, Hermione kisses him as a reward for his performance in the First Task and calls him her knight 443 450 453.
Su Er’s Unconsciousness and Return
After Su Er is struck by the Killing Curse, Hermione keeps vigil at his bedside. Madam Pomfrey tells her that his body and magic remain healthy and that he may be able to hear her. Hermione consequently recounts their shared memories, describes her feelings, and tells him when she fell in love with him. She appears to set aside the remaining post-examination classes in order to stay with him 489.
At the end of the school year, she reports Dumbledore’s announcement that Voldemort has returned and bids Su Er good night with a declaration of love. She leaves with Dumbledore’s assurance that she will probably see him when school resumes 489.
When Dumbledore brings Su Er home, Hermione rushes downstairs in her pajamas, embraces him, and kisses him in front of their families. She repeatedly checks that he is truly back rather than a dream. The two remain almost inseparable throughout the following day 500 502.
The Defence Against Dark Magic Group
Hermione helps organize the Defence Against Dark Magic Group during Umbridge’s tenure. She worries when Mundungus Fletcher learns of it, but Su Er reassures her that Dumbledore will not oppose students learning to defend themselves. After Umbridge bans unapproved student groups, Hermione schedules the first meeting and assures Harry and Ron that her enchanted contract will punish an informer 555.
She knows that Su Er is concealing his identity and assists him while he travels in Animagus form. She also knows his connection to the instructor persona Aibo Nokhan. Ginny’s discovery of apparently intimate contact between Hermione and that persona causes a misunderstanding that Hermione has fallen for someone else; the confusion is resolved when Su Er’s identity is openly explained 554 612 655.
Hermione visits the injured Hagrid under a Disillusionment Charm and repeatedly tries to warn him about Umbridge’s authority and the risks of unsuitable Care of Magical Creatures lessons. When Harry later relays Hagrid’s request for help with Grawp, she visits the giant with Su Er and agrees that they can check on him and talk to him, while noting that their approaching O.W.L.s limit their available time 565 567 604.
The Grey Lady’s Legacy
Hermione investigates a hidden Ravenclaw room by researching ghosts and questioning Hogwarts’ resident spirits. The Fat Friar tells her about the Bloody Baron’s pursuit of the Grey Lady and his involvement with Ravenclaw’s Diadem. The Baron identifies a room in Ravenclaw that the Grey Lady loved because it had a direct view of the starry sky 585.
Working with Su Er, Hermione brings Ravenclaw’s Diadem to the relevant statue and correctly deduces that it fits a recess beside its inscription. She also helps remove and transport the Ravenclaw Common Room’s wooden door because she believes its magical knocker is part of the solution. The Grey Lady appears and questions their actions 593.
The investigation results in Hermione receiving the Grey Lady’s legacy: knowledge is placed in her mind, and a starlight-woven blanket strengthens her magic. The sudden increase disrupts her control and produces unintended wandless effects. Su Er judges the condition milder than his own previous power surges and tells her to relearn her spells to adjust to her new magical output 596.
The Ministry Trap and Advanced Defensive Training
When Harry believes Sirius is being tortured at the Ministry, Hermione urges him to verify Sirius’s location and contact McGonagall or the Order of the Phoenix. She remains composed despite Harry’s distress and reminds him that the Patronus Charm offers another means of communication 607.
Su Er confirms through Dumbledore that the vision is a trap and Sirius is safe. Hermione cooperates with the plan to turn the trap against Voldemort. At the Ministry, she takes Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Umbridge and later maintains a Shield Charm behind Su Er and Harry as they try to escape the fighting 609 613 615.
In subsequent Defence lessons taught by Su Er as Professor Nockhan, Hermione correctly identifies the importance of defence and his use of Nonverbal Spells. During paired practice with Neville, she silently blocks his Jelly-Legs Jinx and casts Densaugeo nonverbally, demonstrating that she is among the group members who have mastered nonverbal casting 631 632.
The Approach to War and the Battle of Hogwarts
During the later conflict, Hermione and Tonks challenge an approaching Su Er with their wands ready. Once he answers her identity check, Hermione rushes to examine him, visibly relieved that he is unharmed 644.
At the Burrow, Su Er secretly tells her that Snape killed Dumbledore to gain Voldemort’s trust as part of Dumbledore’s arrangements. He explains that Harry must return to Hogwarts for them to have a genuine chance of defeating Voldemort and leaves to persuade the Order against keeping Harry away from school 650.
When Su Er’s identity as Aibo Nokhan is revealed to their friends, Hermione explains that he has been beside them all along. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Su Er finds her safe beside Tonks near the covered bridge, her face covered in grime, while he helps clear attacking Inferi 655 658.
Later Life
In the extra side story, Hermione is visibly pregnant and remains close to Su Er and Angel. As Angel prepares to board the Hogwarts Express, Hermione joins the others in teasing her about the Sorting Ceremony, inventing a claim that it requires retrieving something from the Forbidden Forest 663.
Appearance
- Hair: Bushy, brown hair; later described as soft and waist-length 1 37 500.
- Face: Large eyes and a delicate face 1.
- Teeth: Large, prominent front teeth; comments about them are particularly unwelcome 1 2.
- Temporary Polyjuice features: Black cat ears and a black tail after her unsuccessful Polyjuice investigation 118.
- Animagus appearance: A slender black cat with emerald-green eyes and silky fur that gleams faintly in moonlight 315.
- Later appearance: Visibly pregnant in the extra side story 663.
Personality
Hermione is academically ambitious and intensely book-focused. She memorizes textbooks before arriving at Hogwarts, buys supplementary reading to understand the unfamiliar magical world, and sometimes becomes so absorbed that she misses greetings or nearly forgets her train home 9 11 12 43.
Her respect for rules can be uncompromising. Before Hogwarts, she routinely reports classmates’ misconduct; in Diagon Alley, she wants an expensive legal reference book to avoid accidentally breaking wizarding law. Nevertheless, the troll encounter shows her willingness to face danger for classmates and take blame during the professors’ questioning 9 23 30 31.
With Su Er, she is affectionate, easily embarrassed, and quick to retaliate against teasing. She reacts strongly when he mocks her teeth or neglects their meetings, but accepts his apologies and thoughtful gifts. Her rapid questioning of Neville also shows how her enthusiasm can overwhelm others without her intending it 2 12 20 41 44.
Her academic perseverance can become excessive. The pressure of her third-year schedule makes her irritable, and she initially struggles to accept Divination as a subject in which hard work does not produce the results she expects. After the Time-Turner crisis, she recognizes the need to reduce her workload and drops electives 300 313 318.
Hermione is persistent about social justice, particularly house-elf welfare. She researches the issue, recruits supporters, and continues advocating legal rights even when individual elves resist her efforts to pay them 384 440 503.
As she matures, she demonstrates considerable composure in emergencies. When Harry panics over Sirius’s apparent capture, she asks for verification and outside assistance rather than immediately accepting the vision as fact 607.
Her growing confidence does not eliminate her shyness about public affection. She can become jealous when another girl appears interested in Su Er, but she also takes pride in his abilities and eventually expresses her love openly, particularly during his prolonged unconsciousness and their reunion 365 402 489 500.

- Receives praise from Sirius for precise incantation and wand movements, despite Lupin’s warning that the process is dangerously advanced for her age 285.
- Successfully transforms into a black cat and returns to human form. Her first transformation leaves her tired and unfamiliar with moving in her animal body 315.
- Initially leaves her clothing behind during the transformation and is unaware of this when changing back 315.
Enchantments and Nonverbal Magic
- Enchants the Defence Against Dark Magic Group’s contract to punish anyone who informs on its members 555.
- Masters Nonverbal Spells rather than merely whispering incantations. In paired practice, she silently casts both defensive magic and Densaugeo 632.
- Experiences unintended wandless magic after the Grey Lady’s legacy abruptly increases her magical power. This is identified as a control problem caused by the increase, not evidence that she has mastered deliberate wandless casting 596.
