Background / History

Family Life and the Zoo Incident

Angel was born after the Ellisons adopted Su Er. Suli conceived her five years after finding him, reinforcing her belief that Su Er was the family’s lucky angel. Angel grew up doted on by her father and older brother; their indulgence contributed to her developing tooth decay, for which Hermione brought medicine from the Grangers’ dental clinic 1.

After Angel became frightened by Hermione shaking Su Er during an argument, he soothed both girls by promising a zoo trip. During the outing, Angel chose to visit the reptile house. When a python escaped and the crowd panicked, Su Er sheltered her and Hermione in a corner before bringing them out safely, suffering bruises in the process. Angel wiped his sweat while they waited for help and burst into tears upon seeing her parents 2 3.

Su Er later recalls that he was present when Angel was born and was the first person she saw when she opened her eyes 507.

Discovering Magic

Angel brought Su Er his Hogwarts acceptance letter, became fascinated by its animal-decorated seal, and tore open the envelope herself. She later revealed his admission to Hermione, ending Hermione’s mistaken belief that they would attend different schools 4.

During Dumbledore’s visit, he transformed a wooden chair into a silver-white, golden-horned pony that Angel rode around the living room. He left it for the night, but it reverted to a chair the next morning. Angel cried, guarded the chair, and repeatedly asked when the white-bearded visitor would return 5 6.

Su Er and Suli tried to stop her requests by pretending that mentioning unicorns made Su Er ill. Angel recognized the trick and refused to speak to them for several days. Su Er eventually reconciled with her by inviting her to the magical shopping district and mentioning unicorns 6.

Diagon Alley and Su Er’s Departure

Angel accompanied the Ellison and Granger families to Diagon Alley, where she eagerly requested ice cream and admired a unicorn-patterned cloak at Madam Malkin’s. Su Er secretly commissioned a child-sized version. She discovered it before term began and proudly wore it while asking family members and neighbors whether she looked good 7 9 11.

She also asked Tonks for a unicorn during the Aurors’ visit to the Ellison home. Tonks transformed a stool into a silver horse and added a horn, but could not make it move as Dumbledore’s creation had 10.

Angel was devastated when Su Er left for Hogwarts. He comforted her with a promise involving unicorn Transfiguration, which became his planned Christmas gift and a reason for studying advanced Transfiguration. While he was away, she spent much of her time in his bedroom and contributed a crookedly written “big brother” to a letter from home 11 20 27.

Christmas Reunion

Angel greeted Su Er’s return in tears. During the holiday, she, Su Er, and Suli shared Honeydukes’ Transformation Sweets and laughed at their altered appearances. Suli told him that Angel had asked every day during his three-month absence why he had not written to her 44 45.

At Christmas, Angel received two distinct unicorn gifts: Su Er’s rideable but motionless Transfigured horse, and a tiny moving figurine sent by Dumbledore. Su Er allowed her to believe the figurine was his gift too. Before leaving with Amelia, he warned Angel that the larger unicorn would disappear the following day; she chose to stay home and enjoy more rides 49.

Su Er also gave Angel a three-piece set of unicorn-hair winter accessories. She loved the set and wore it while building snowmen and having snowball fights. Her enthusiasm for these new gifts helped her accept the disappearance of the Transfigured unicorn 53 54.

High Fever and Recovery

Near the end of Su Er’s Christmas holiday, Angel developed a persistent high fever. Her family took her to several hospitals and consulted multiple doctors, but the fever returned after ordinary medicine wore off. The illness left Su Er deeply anxious until Hermione suggested trying Pepperup Potion 54.

Su Er, Hermione, and Mr. Ellison went to Diagon Alley for brewing equipment and ingredients. After unsuccessful attempts, Hermione brewed the potion successfully, and Mrs. Ellison gave it to Angel. Its steam-producing effects initially frightened her mother, but after three hours Angel’s fever broke and she woke to find her family and Hermione beside her 54.

Later Holidays and Growing Up

During a summer visit from the Dursleys, Angel helped Su Er put away magical belongings before their guests arrived. She tried to obtain permission to keep the sweets in her own room, but Su Er refused because their mother had restricted her consumption. When she answered the door, Angel mistook Dudley for a pig transformed into a person, prompting an apology from Mrs. Ellison. She subsequently offered Harry a lemon sweet 76 77.

Su Er later brought her a Puffskein from Diagon Alley. Angel played with it while Crookshanks chased it around during the holidays 82. On a subsequent Christmas visit, she and Mrs. Ellison were away on a trip until Christmas Day, leaving Su Er to return to an unusually quiet house without her 111.

As she grew older, Angel continued sneaking sweets despite her mother’s restrictions, hiding them among the books in Su Er’s bedroom while losing her baby teeth 163. Su Er bought her a piano decorated with lifelike unicorns, and she began regularly playing him the pieces she learned from her teacher 169.

When her parents left for a two-day anniversary trip to North Wales, Su Er looked after Angel. She accompanied him to collect Harry from Privet Drive and spent Harry’s birthday at an amusement park and in Diagon Alley. Exhausted by the outing, she fell asleep against Su Er in the taxi and later slept holding her unicorn doll 170 171 172.

Angel quickly grew comfortable with Harry during his stay, praising the breakfast he prepared. She also spent time with Crookshanks while Hermione was away and played with Hedwig after Harry’s departure 173 174. When Su Er brought home a Wizard’s Chess set, Angel learned its rules and advised her father, but became upset while arguing with its insulting pieces 181.

By a later Christmas, she could play a passage from The Nutcracker smoothly after several days of practice, performing for Su Er and Hermione before bowing to her audience. Su Er again passed on a moving unicorn toy from Dumbledore while taking credit for the present 290 292.

During Hagrid’s visit to the Ellison home, Angel initially mistook him for a gorilla, then eagerly questioned him about magic. She declared her intention to attend Hogwarts when she turned eleven. Her offer of a Honeydukes sweet caused a commotion when Hagrid ate it and began breathing fire 332. By the time she examined Su Er’s brass badger ornament, she was attending primary school and remained fascinated by magical novelties such as Canary Creams 338.

After three years of Su Er’s schooling, Angel was still reluctant to see him and Hermione leave, but had grown more accustomed to their departures. Having noticed the change in their relationship, she regarded Hermione as her sister-in-law 368.

First Visit to Hogwarts

Angel was delighted when her family received an invitation to Hogwarts. She sent several owl letters asking whether she needed wizard robes for the visit, having long wanted to see the school 472.

At Hogwarts, she rushed into Su Er’s arms and greeted Harry, whom she remembered from his stay at her home. Su Er showed her, the Ellisons, and the Grangers around the castle. Angel was particularly excited by the moving staircases, talking portraits, and other sights that matched her imagined magical school. When Peeves insulted the Muggle visitors, Su Er sent him away with Waddiwasi. The group later met Hermione outside her History of Magic examination 475.

Su Er’s Apparent Death and Magical Awakening

After Su Er was struck by the Killing Curse during the competition, Angel saw the grief surrounding his unresponsive body. Although she did not fully understand death, she became distressed by the adults’ explanations and cried for her brother to wake up 487.

At home, her parents told her that Su Er was injured and receiving treatment. Angel nevertheless sensed their sorrow and suppressed her own distress, understanding that crying would not resolve the situation. She was at piano lessons when Su Er returned, and Mr. Ellison drove to bring her home 501.

Seeing Su Er smiling at her released Angel’s pent-up emotions. Her sobbing triggered an uncontrolled magical awakening: glass shards, picture frames, cups, chairs, the television, and other objects rose into the air before crashing down. Angel collapsed from exhaustion. Dumbledore protected those present with shields, repaired the room, and confirmed that she had awakened as a witch. His examination established that she needed only a night’s sleep to recover 501.

Dumbledore suggested that a wizard or Squib ancestor could explain her magic, prompting Mr. Ellison to retrieve an old family booklet. Her parents were delighted to have another magical child, although their knowledge of the dangers in the wizarding world also gave them concerns 501 502.

Snape’s Visit and Magical Gifts

Snape later visited the Ellison home and showed unusual patience toward Angel. Unafraid of his intimidating appearance, she introduced herself, offered her hand, and began asking him questions. Afterward, she told Hermione that the frightening-looking visitor had seemed friendly 506.

A delivery bearing Snape’s signature subsequently brought Angel numerous magical toys and sweets. She delighted in the gifts, especially a stick that released smoke, streamers, and singing, butterfly-winged creatures. Su Er wondered whether Snape’s generosity arose from a family connection through the Prince family, but treated the precise explanation as a guess 507.

Despite her magical awakening, Angel’s parents continued her piano lessons, believing that music would cultivate her poise 506. When Moody later collected Su Er and Hermione to stay with his group until the school term began, Angel remained at home with Mrs. Ellison 508.

Wartime Precautions

Before the war’s escalation, Angel examined a magical disguise object Su Er had been wearing. Although fascinated by it, she could not activate it because she had not yet learned how to use magic. During the same visit, Su Er urged the Ellisons and Grangers to leave Britain as soon as possible for their safety 622.

Hogwarts Enrollment

In the postwar side story, Su Er and Hermione saw Angel off at King’s Cross for her first journey to Hogwarts as a student. Conflicting stories from her godfather, Potter, and Weasley had left her uncertain whether the Sorting Ceremony involved potion brewing, obstacles, or an Acromantula. Hermione noted that Hagrid had described Angel as being on very good terms with the Forbidden Forest’s centaurs and unicorns 663.

Angel used Wingardium Leviosa to lift her luggage onto the Hogwarts Express. At the school feast, she glared at Su Er upon discovering that he had misled her about the Sorting Ceremony. McGonagall called “Angie Ellison” first, and Angel approached without stage fright. The Sorting Hat judged that she could fit into any of the four houses and asked her preference. The account ends before her chosen house is announced 663.

Appearance

  • Blonde hair, worn in two small upright pigtails during the Christmas holiday 1 45.
  • Pale blue eyes 75.
  • Small child’s build; the adult unicorn cloak she admired was far too large for her 9.
  • Wears a princess dress to Su Er’s graduation ceremony and later favors her custom unicorn cloak 4 11.
  • Grows noticeably taller and heavier over subsequent holidays; by the time she attends primary school, she no longer needs to jump to reach Su Er’s door handle 164 338.

Personality

Angel is openly affectionate toward Su Er, frequently hugging and kissing him, climbing into his bed, and seeking his attention. Her attachment makes separation difficult: she cries when he leaves for school and again when they reunite 1 11 44 49.

She is energetic and mischievous, persistently waking her brother and teasing him about resembling a monkey or being as lazy as a panda. She also loves answering the front door and readily chats with unfamiliar visitors 1 2 10 49.

Her enthusiasm for unicorns can make her stubborn, but she is not indiscriminately demanding. At Madam Malkin’s, she asks to touch the unicorn embroidery rather than insisting on buying the oversized cloak. She also shows concern for others, wiping Su Er’s sweat after the zoo escape and initially panicking when she believes he is ill 3 6 9.

As she grows older, Angel displays considerable emotional sensitivity. She notices the grief her parents try to conceal during Su Er’s absence and holds back her own distress rather than burdening them. Her eventual reunion with him releases those suppressed feelings with enough intensity to trigger her magical awakening 501.

She is sociable and confident even around intimidating adults. Snape’s appearance does not frighten her away from offering a handshake and asking questions, and she later approaches the Sorting Hat without stage fright 506 663.

Her fascination with magic sometimes outweighs her love of sweets: although she finds Canary Creams excessively sugary, she wants them for the chance to become a bird and fly around the living room 338.

Abilities and Skills

  • Accidental magic — Her awakening produces a powerful, uncontrolled surge that levitates numerous household objects and damages furniture. The outburst exhausts her rather than demonstrating trained control 501 502.
  • Levitation Charm — By her departure for Hogwarts, she can cast Wingardium Leviosa on her luggage 663.
  • Piano playing — Takes regular lessons and performs for her family. Her early playing is hesitant, but practice allows her to play a passage from The Nutcracker smoothly 169 290 506.
  • Wizard’s Chess — Learns the rules and offers her father advice, although the enchanted pieces criticize their play 181.
  • Rapport with magical creatures — Hagrid reports that she is on very good terms with the centaurs and unicorns in the Forbidden Forest; no specialized creature-related magical ability is established 663.

Items and Gifts

  • Custom unicorn cloak — Ordered by Su Er from Madam Malkin’s, modeled on a garment with gold-thread floral trim and a silver-thread unicorn design 9 11.
  • Red unicorn sweatshirt — Angel shows it to Su Er while he opens his own hand-knitted Christmas sweater 49.
  • Moving unicorn figurine — Dumbledore’s Christmas gift; small enough to carry and able to trot around. At a later Christmas, Su Er again gives her a moving unicorn toy from Dumbledore while claiming the credit 49 292.
  • Transfigured unicorn-like horse — Su Er’s Christmas creation, made using Layered Transfiguration and the Switching Spell. Angel can sit on it, but it lacks movement and is temporary 49.
  • Transformation Sweets — Honeydukes sweets that temporarily give her pointed ears and white facial fur; these changes come from the sweets, not an ability of her own 45.
  • Unicorn-hair winter accessories — Su Er obtains unicorn hair for scarves for Angel and others, then finishes yellow-and-silver scarves before the holiday. He subsequently gives Angel a three-piece set comprising a scarf, gloves, and hat, which she wears while playing in the snow 38 42 53 54.
  • Princess dolls — Petunia Dursley gives her a complete set during the family’s visit, but Angel is relatively uninterested because she already owns the collection 77.
  • Puffskein — Brought home by Su Er after a Diagon Alley shopping trip 82.
  • Unicorn-painted piano — Bought by Su Er using his saved pocket money for approximately £10,000 and specially decorated to suit Angel’s tastes 169.
  • Unicorn doll — Holds it while sleeping after Harry’s birthday outing 172.
  • Canary Creams — Seeks out the biscuits to experience turning into a bird and flying; the transformation is a product of the sweets rather than her own magic 292 338.
  • Snape’s gift collection — Includes a ballet-dancing doll, a functioning automatic children’s kitchen, a self-reading storybook, a toy flying broomstick, a stick that produces singing winged creatures, a cartoonish wizard’s hat with a pink bow, and sweets advertised as protecting children’s teeth 507.
  • Wand — Scarlet and carved with roses; its wood, core, and length are not specified 663.

Relationships

  • Su Er Ellison — Adoptive older brother and her favorite playmate. His promise to make her a unicorn motivates his advanced Transfiguration practice. Her reunion with him after his apparent death triggers her magical awakening; he later sees her off to Hogwarts 1 6 27 501 663.
  • Suli / Mrs. Ellison — Mother; comforts Angel when frightened and shares in her enjoyment of unicorn rides and magical sweets. She regulates Angel’s sweet consumption and continues her piano education after her magical awakening 3 6 45 163 506.
  • Mr. Ellison — Father; indulges and cares for her, and originally plans for Su Er to look after her later in life. He brings her home for the reunion that reveals her magic and retrieves the family booklet to investigate its possible ancestral origin 1 3 5 501.
  • Hermione Granger — Neighbor whom Angel calls “Sister Granger.” They become especially close while Angel is refusing to speak to Su Er. Hermione brews the Pepperup Potion that cures Angel’s fever, and Angel later regards her as her sister-in-law after noticing her relationship with Su Er 1 6 54 368.
  • Albus Dumbledore — Friendly magical visitor who gives her candy, her first moving unicorn ride, and a Christmas figurine. He protects everyone during her magical awakening, repairs its damage, and confirms that she is a witch 5 49 501.
  • Tonks — Auror who tries to fulfill Angel’s unicorn request, then apologizes when her creation cannot move 10.
  • Harry Potter — Su Er’s friend, whom she first meets during the Dursleys’ visit. They become familiar during his birthday outing and stay at the Ellison home; she praises his cooking and later recognizes him at Hogwarts 77 171 173 475.
  • Severus Snape — Godfather by the time she enters Hogwarts. He responds to her friendliness with unusual patience and sends her an extensive collection of magical toys and sweets. Su Er speculates that his behavior may reflect a family connection through the Prince family. Snape privately hopes she will enter Slytherin 506 507 663.
  • Rubeus Hagrid — Hogwarts professor whom she initially mistakes for a gorilla. He patiently answers her questions and encourages her hope of attending Hogwarts; he later reports her friendship with the Forbidden Forest’s centaurs and unicorns 332 663.
  • Crookshanks — Hermione’s cat, who becomes attached to Angel while Hermione is on holiday, following her around and sleeping with her after she gives him snacks 173.
